There is the Blockhead that has been a fixture of the electronic music

scene for more than since his 2004 Ninja Tune debut Music By

Cavelight; putting out a string of critically acclaimed albums and touring

with everyone from Diplo to Amon Tobin and Kid Koala.

Then there is the rap producer Blockhead, whose collaborations with

Aesop Rock-Labor Days, None Shall Pass - are part of indie hip-hop

canon. The veteran who collaborated with luminaries like Cage, Illogic

and Blueprint but also made memorable records with then little-known

artists like Despot and billy woods early in their careers.

Free Sweatpants is the first time the two Blockhead’s connect, in what

is really the most appropriate form. A mixtape-esque album that pairs

his narrative-driven solo aesthetic with a team of rappers that thrive in

Blockhead’s layered, melodic sound. Aesop Rock, Tree, Breezly Brewin,

One of Queens, NY most popular MC’s, N.O.R.E. (aka Noreaga) returns

“Every ending leads to a new beginning.”

Rising pianist/singer Aaron Abernathy has created a stir with his last two solo albums “Monologue” and “Dialogue” and now returns with the final installment of the series: “Epilogue.” Widely known for his live performances and collaborative efforts with artists including Black Milk, Slum Village, and Foreign Exchange, Abernathy has embarked on solo tours in the US, Europe, and Japan in support of his solo work, and this new release is his most personal work yet.

This follow up to Monologue and Dialogue focuses on restoration after heartbreak, an album that Abernathy has lived through and through and was uncertain about sharing. This vulnerable complex true story is made up of three acts touching on situations Abernathy and his peers are currently in the midst of living. The acts of HIS, HERS, and OURS take us through Abernathy’s more adventurous electro-soul compositions as he tells the story of his breakup with a woman he loved dearly and how he react to their ending, a woman named Noelle’s relationship with a man she was dearly in love with and how’s she’s coping with their relationship ending, and lastly how him Noelle are discovering if it’s possible to heal and love again after major heartbreak.

Abernathy said “I wrote this album because I’-m aware that everyone wants LOVE but many of us lack restoration and healing which is the most important step. Somewhere along the way we have been socialized to forgo healing and move to the next relationship without working on the spaces we need to grow in prior to finding love again and walking in prepared to do our part to create a love that will last. The optimistic outlook I found in creating “Epilogue” is that by definition it’s a piece of writing at the end of a work literature, usually used to bring closure to work. This is the last piece of writing in this series of albums in which I want to express that we’re bringing an ending to continuous heartbreak surrounding love and every ending leads to a new beginning. I’m praying our new beginnings will be filled with healing so that we can have the love our hearts desire.”

Five years after releasing Return of the Astro-Goth, Yugen Blakrok

descends from the vast cosmos and delivers to the world an impressive

lesson in style, with her second album Anima Mysterium. Far from the

stars but heavy with the irradiant wisdom; it’s towards Earth, humanity

and the obscurity at its core that the South African rapper directs her

incantations. Accompanied by Kanif the Jhatmaster’s beats, Yugen’s

All Praises Due is a collaborative project from veteran MC – Torae

and producer Praise. The duo teamed up to create the seven song EP

Funky Mother is Analog Son’s fourth full-length and their most robust

effort yet with a 12-song collection of instant classics composed by

co-founders and longtime musical collaborators, Jordan Linit and

Josh Fairman. It is the first release on Color Red, a brand new hub of

high-quality, curated content founded by Eddie Roberts of The New

Mastersounds, who also produced the record.

With Roberts at the helm in the studio and producing the album, the band

has evolved beyond just being solid composers. As the name Analog

Son implies Linit, Fairman, and company, have truly become the new

generation of heavy-hitting, authentic groove music that was cultivated

in the 70s. The group utilized vintage recording techniques like putting

t-shirts on the drums and recording with minimal mics pushing the

envelope in both the funk genre and further into their own sound. “Ugly

From the first note, Lindsey Webster captivates listeners. Her rich, soulful

voice enchants a dedicated following who connect with the raw emotion

she shares with them. As a Soul R&B artist, she combines an admirable

natural talent with a genuine, accessible stage presence.

Webster considers herself “very, very lucky” to have grown up in

Woodstock, NY. With a heavy emphasis on arts and music, her grade

school had a progressive music program where Lindsey cultivated a

deep love of music by learning the cello. After playing for 10 years, often

in first chair, she moved to NYC to attend Fiorello H. LaGuardia School for

the Music, Art & Performing Arts. As she grew musically, she transitioned

from strings to voice where she heard her calling and found herself.

In 2009, Lindsey met her partner, Keith Slattery, and started performing

performed over 600 shows in venues including Bearsville Theater, Levon

soulandjazz.com. Hurst brought Webster to Atlanta Records, who signed

Change shows a real transition and beautiful growth for Webster as an

This minor funk group hailed from Florida and was led by Rodney

Mathews. Their classic floor-filler “Evil Vibrations,” was sampled by De

La Soul on “A Rollerskating Jam Named Saturday.” From the original

1978 liner notes: “The birth of The Mighty Ryeders took place in April

of 1977 (A.D). Within a month after those first breaths, this gifted eight

member group began setting the stage to be best or among the best

recording and entertainment group of their time. With this concept, and a

With Darondo’s passing, the world truly lost a singular and unique talent.

His Let My People Go album has now reached “legendary” status with

tracks featured on numerous A-list shows such as Breaking Bad and

CSI, gaining legions of new fans in addition to the Soul afficionados who

already knew of Darondo’s music. A mystery to most, Darondo records

are high on the wants-lists of many collectors. He is spoken about in

hushed-tones by other Bay Area musicians. Back in the day he was

seen cruising around town in a white Rolls Royce. He opened-up for

James Brown and lived a colorful lifestyle hanging with folks like the

notorious Fillmore Slim. Take a listen to these tracks, released for the

first time together on an album, and you may agree that he could have

been the next Al Green or Sly Stone. But about 25 years ago Darondo

disappeared. Releasing three singles in the early 1970s he mixed low-

rider soul with blues and RnB. He delivered in a variety of styles from the

socially-charged “Let My People Go” to the sexually-driven funk of “Legs”.

All three singles were recorded in the Bay Area, and both sides of each

of the singles are fantastic productions. The six tracks from the three

original singles are featured here, along with three previously unreleased

songs that were recently discovered on a demo reel. Recorded in the

early 1970s, tracks from the demo reel were taken into a San Francisco

studio in the summer of 2005 for enhancement. Darondo over-dubbed

missing background vocals and guitar parts alongside up and coming

San Francisco soul man Bing Ji Ling.
