2 Specimen verification

The specimens were delivered to BM TRADA during October 2015. BM TRADA constructed a nominally 100mm thick steel stud/plasterboard clad, mineral wool insulated partition. The client subsequently installed the systems into the supporting construction, with assistance from BM TRADA as required.

2.1 Conditioning

Exova Warringtonfire stored the specimens in climatic conditions approximate to those in normal service.

2.2 Sampling

The fire stopping products used for the test were sampled by Ross Newman of BM TRADA on the 24th and 25th September 2015. (Details held on file by BM TRADA). The pipes used for the test were bought or supplied from standard manufacturing stock either from the manufacturer of the pipe or a distributor. The PVC pipes were labelled as being manufactured to BSEN 1329, the copper pipes to ASTM B 88 and the steel pipes to BS EN 10305-3/5 Grade E 220.

3 Description of supporting construction

The supporting construction comprised of a 3000mm wide x 3000mm high steel stud/plasterboard clad partition, built in accordance with BSEN 1366-3: 2009, into a refractory lined steel restraint frame. The partition framing comprised of 50mm wide x 25mm high galvanised steel ‘C’ section studs fitted at nominally 600mm centres, and 52mm wide x 35mm high galvanised steel ‘U’ channel head and base track, with 50mm thick, 100kg/m3 mineral wool insulation friction fitted between the studs, and clad on both faces with 2 layers of 12.5mm thick Type F plasterboard. The partition included 22 apertures. The fire seal aperture was fitted with steel stud at the top and bottom, and lined on all edges with 2No. layers of 12.5mm thick Type F plasterboard. The supporting construction was fixed on the horizontal edges, the vertical edges remained free. The gap between the vertical edges and restraint frame were sealed with mineral rock wool.

4 Description of specimens

Position details of the specimens are shown below. All measurements are in mm and the descriptions are written viewing the specimens from the unexposed face unless stated otherwise. All pipes measured 1200mm long with a minimum of 500mm protruding from the exposed face. All copper and steel pipes were tested capped on the exposed face only, the PVC pipes were tested uncapped at both ends and the Aquatherm pipes were tested capped at both ends. The mineral wool insulation within the partition wall was removed for 100mm surrounding all penetrations.

4.1 Service penetration supports

(Read in conjunction with photographs below) The service penetration support system consisted of Unistrut steel frame sections and associated attachments. The Unistrut frame section was constructed using 3mm thick profiled steel ‘U’ channel. On the unexposed face, 11No 500mm Unistrut cantilever arm sections provided support for 8No. lengths of Unistrut, providing horizontal support for the pipes at 300mm and 450mm from the face of the partition, fixed to 3No. vertical lengths of Unistrut fixed to 2No. horizontal lengths of Unistrut fixed to the restraint frame above and below the partition. On the exposed face, 11No 500mm long Unistrut cantilever arm sections provided support for 8No. Unistrut ‘U’ section channels providing horizontal support for the pipes at 300mm and 450mm from the face of the partition, fixed to 3No. vertical lengths of Unistrut fixed to 2No. horizontal lengths of Unistrut fixed to the head and base of the partition. 5 Test Conditions

5.1 Furnace temperature

The furnace was controlled to follow the temperature/time relationship specified in BSEN 1363: Part 1: 2012 Section 5.1.1 as closely as possible, using the average of nine plate thermometers suitably distributed within the furnace.

The temperatures recorded are shown graphically below:

5.2 Pressure readings

After the first 5 minutes of the test, the furnace pressure was maintained at 0.6 ± 5 Pa and after 10 minutes was maintained at 0.6 ± 3 Pa with respect to atmosphere, at a point 0.5m from the notional floor level, equating to 10 Pa along the bottom row of samples. The pressure readings are shown graphically below:

5.3 Ambient temperature

The ambient temperature of the test area at commencement of the test was 15°C.

5.4 Unexposed face thermocouple positions and test equipment

5.4.1 The temperature of the unexposed face of each specimen was monitored by means of thermocouples positioned in accordance with the test standard to determine the maximum unexposed face temperature rise.

5.4.2 A roving thermocouple was available to monitor any positions suspected of being at a greater temperature than indicated by fixed position thermocouples.

5.4.3 The thermocouple positions are shown on each specimen in Section 7.

5.4.4 The temperatures recorded have been tabulated in the Appendix.

5.4.5 Gap gauges and cotton pads were available to assess integrity of the specimens

8 Limitations

This report details the method of construction, the test conditions and the results obtained when the specific element of construction described herein was tested following the procedure outline in EN 1363-1, and where appropriate EN 1363-2. Any significant deviation with respect to size, construction details, loads, stresses, edge or end conditions other than those allowed under the field of direct application in the relevant test method is not covered by this report.

The results only relate to the behaviour of the element of construction under the particular conditions of test; they are not intended to be the sole criteria for assessing the potential fire performance of the element in use nor do they reflect the actual behaviour in fires.

The specification and interpretation of fire test methods are the subject of ongoing development and refinement. Changes in associated legislation may also occur. For these reasons it is recommended that the relevance of test reports over 5 years old should be considered by the user. Exova Warringtonfire will be able to offer, on behalf of the legal owner, a review of the procedures adopted for a particular test to ensure that they are consistent with current practices, and if required may endorse the test report.

Because of the nature of fire resistance testing and the consequent difficulty in quantifying the uncertainty of measurement of fire resistance, it is not possible to provide a stated degree of accuracy of the result.

Revision A – January 2016: Change to insulation temperature failure time of specimen 2 on page 4.

9 Field of direct application of test results

The results of the test are directly applicable to similar constructions where one or more of the changes listed in BSEN 1366-3: 2009 Clause 13, are made and the construction continues to comply with that appropriate design code for its stiffness and stability. Other changes are not permitted by the document. A copy of the field of direct application is available from Exova Warringtonfire upon request.
