The Temptation of Christ by Sandro Botticelli

2 St. Anne 12 March 2017

When I lived in Rome, Italy had a new government almost every month it seemed. Judging by how much the exchange rate fluctuated, the economy was weak. And there was a strike by some group of workers al-most every other day. Well the Italians still have a hard time keeping their prime ministers (the last gov-ernment fell in December.) There are tax protests still and the taxi drivers are mad about the threat of Uber. A nun just turned 110 years of age. In other words, Italy is still its idiosyncratic self but its economy is do-ing better because it is tied to the Euro.

My favorite part of the New York Times is the book section. There I find what new books have come out and which of them are any good. I read the reviews of books I have no intention of buying because they are on themes I don’t find all that interesting because I believe I ought to know a little something about many, many topics, even economics. Over the years I have discovered new writers that I have followed as they have written and published subsequent books, authors like Ann Patchett and Marilynne Robinson. As a writ-er myself, I look at the best sellers list and dream of seeing a book of mine there someday.

One of the images of heaven is that of a banquet. Im-agine the biggest ball room you’ve ever seen and peo-ple wandering around introducing themselves to the newcomers. I would first try to find my parents to see how they are doing. I’d also keep an eye out for my first pastor to thank him for all he taught me. After that I would look for authors I feel I know because of how their writing moved me, like Flannery O’Connor, Walker Percy and Thomas Merton. No doubt Jesus and his mother would be very popular up there so I might have to wait awhile. No rush; I can take my time since I have all eternity. The one thing I will miss though is the Sunday delivery of the New York Times.

Msgr. Mike

READING THE PAPER

My favorite time of the week is Sunday afternoon because I stretch out on my couch then and read the New York Times, front to back, except for the sports section. (I have never been much of a sports fan.) Why isn’t it the Los Angeles Times or the Orange County Register that I am reading? I guess it is because I already know a lot about this part of the world and I am very interested in finding out what’s happening elsewhere. Also I have travelled over the years to every continent except Antarctica and like to find out the news of the whole world, particularly those places where I have been.

Few people have been to the Central African Re-public, one of the poorest countries in the world. I went there with Msgr. Wilbur Davis many years ago because a friend of ours was there working in the Peace Corps. He was teaching in a school. When we were there, rental cars did not exist; peo-ple got around by means of “traffiques,” vans load-ed up with as many people as would fit which crossed the country on dirt roads as few highways were paved. Nowadays there is something of a civil war going on with rebel groups fighting each other. I read the newspaper to find out what in the world they think is worth fighting for.

With Msgr. Tuan Pham, I once traveled to Vi-etnam on something of a pilgrimage. There were also a number of bishops on the trip so in every big city we visited we’d find ourselves at the cathedral celebrating Mass with the resident bishop and be-ing fed at a kind of banquet afterwards. The food they served was what they imagined we would like. At one we were served steak which must have cost them plenty. Every place we visited people were taking pictures of us getting off the bus or standing in the procession line. When I asked why anyone would want to take pictures of us, I was told that they were government officials who were to report back on what we were doing. Imagine being the object of surveillance. Today Vietnam has one of the fastest growing economies in Asia.

“Help Us Help Those In Need”

CRS RICE BOWL ENCOUNTER INNOVATION This week we encounter the Singh family in India, where a mother and father are using innovative farming techniques to feed their family amidst a flood. How is God inviting us to think outside of the box in service to others this Lent? Thank you to all who took rice bowls home Ash Wednes-day and this past weekend. If you did not take a bowl, there are bowls still available in the vestibule of the church and by the side entrance. Remember to not just think of the box and the little snack it provides but think of the many people the box represents who will have something to eat because of your almsgiving. There will be a special box to return the rice bowls on Palm Sunday. For those who have smart phones, there is a free rice bowl app that you can download with daily prayer reflections. Also, each day of Lent individuals are invited to use the Lenten calendar in-cluded with their Rice Bowl to guide their Lenten almsgiv-ing. The calendar inside of the box describes families in need. Visit crsrice-bowl.org for more ways to talk to children about pray-ing and why we choose to give money during Lent.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS Each Friday after the 9:00 a.m. Mass during Lent, join us for Stations of the Cross in the Church. As a mini pilgrimage moving from station to station, we are asked to recall and meditate on specific events from Christ's last day.
