coast of Cape Cod. Just before 8.00pm on Thursday July 28, 1916, the wind changed to the north and the breeze locked the town in fog.

Eugene O!Neill, a twenty-seven-year-old untried playwright, came to Provincetown the summer of 1916 looking for a stage. He found it perched on the waterfront, scruffy and salty, awaiting his debut. He knew from his theatrical experience with his father, the popular actor James O!Neill, that this setting was a natural one for his sea play. Bound East for Cardiff takes place mid-ocean in a cramped, noisome forecastle on a foggy night. O!Neill helped to direct the play, insisting on a minimum of props. And with a beginner!s luck, on premiere night the sea provided a bonus of special effects:

had found a new home. He stayed on in Provincetown for nine years, which became one of the most productive periods of his career.

Only days before, Bound East had been read by the actor Frederick Burt for Provincetown's democratic caucus of bohemians. The taciturn, brooding O!Neill listened from the adjoining dining room. Approval was unanimous. Spontaneously the assemblage rushed to congratulate their new playwright. They knew immediately that O!Neill!s play was different; it was the breakthrough they had hoped for.

Why this instantaneous approval of O!Neill? Most of the artists and writers present at this reading were familiar with the leading playwrights of Europe, Strindberg and Ibsen, whose work had inspired O!Neill. O!Neill had adopted the Europeans! melancholy and introspective themes to become

artist. Many of the innovative techniques that he later employed in his major dramas - poetic use of light and sound, dialect, dramatic narrative - had their beginnings in this germinal play, the one he selected for his premiere. In 1922 after he had won a Pulitzer Price for Beyond the Horizon, O!Neill recounted that in the winter of 1913 and 1914, he had written “eight one-act plays and two long plays. Of these Bound East for Cardiff and the Sea Plays [were the] only ones worth remembering.” The audience had witnessed a magic moment, a turning point in theatre history. All the memoirists in the audience, and there were many, talked and wrote about O'Neill's première and that “remarkable summer” of 1916 in Provincetown. In September, before they left for subsequent successful seasons in New York City, they became a formal group, the Provincetown Players.

Theatre history was being made on Lewis Wharf. But O'Neill decided even before that night that the theatre would be his whole life. Those who took part in the plays formed a loose vanguard directed toward a new American theatre that would break free from the hackneyed melodramas and frothy comedies of Broadway. Bound East and the Sea Plays were more than just a signal success - they introduced the man who would revolutionize the making of art for the American stage.

Kirsty Henderson | Company Stage ManagerSince training at the Central School of Speech and Drama, Kirsty has Stage Managed for the RSC, The National Youth Theatre, The Old Vic New Voices and The Hampstead Theatre. Other theatre credits include: Synergy!s Convictions (Soho Theatre) and their tour of Holloway Jones; Creation!s Arabian Nights and the No 1 UK tour of Stepping Out. Kirsty travels the country as a Tour Manager for Remarkable Productions, Millennium Dance and Nutkhut, taking shows to Arts Festivals throughout the Summer. Production Management roles include Block9 at Glastonbury; Lovebox; Edinburgh Festival; The Mayors Thames Festival and Heart n Soul Clubs. Kirsty has taken on many other Production roles at LED Fest, Underage, Felid Day, Greenwich and Dockland Festivals, The London Mela, Liberty and Greenwich World Cultural Festival.

Katy Adeney | Costume AssistantKaty graduated from Central School of Speech and Drama in 2008 with a BA Hons in Costume Construction. Since then she has been working as a costume maker, supervisor and wardrobe misstress. Kym Bartlett | MarketingKym has been working in arts marketing and communications for 15 years. Her work encompasses the commercial and subsidised sectors in regional and London venues with recent and current clients including the Barbican, Royal Court West End, Headlong Theatre and Ambassador Theatre Group. Most recently she was Head of Communications at London!s Royal Court Theatre from 2007-2011 under the artistic directorship of Dominic Cooke. Prior to this Kym was a freelance marketing and press consultant for a diverse range of art forms. Her earlier roles include Marketing Manager at Ambassador Theatre Group and Account Manager at Feref Associates, a West End design agency.

Bea Wilson | Assistant to the ProducerBea Wilson graduated from Camberwell College of Arts in June 2011. Since then she has been pursuing a career in the arts working on a variety of projects and exhibitions.

Alex Gammie | Press RepresentativeAlex is a freelance theatre publicist who has worked for numerous companies and theatres in London, on tour and at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe for the past fourteen years. Clients have included The Bush Theatre, Kneehigh Theatre, Unlimited, Scamp Theatre
