Sea Mar was founded in 1978 with a single clinic in the South Park neighborhood of Seattle. Today, Sea Mar is one of Washington state’s largest providers of community-based,

comprehensive health care. While Sea Mar continues to specialize in providing bilingual and culturally appropriate services to Latinos, people of all races, ethnicities, and income levels are served. In 2011-12, Sea Mar provided services at 44 medical, dental, and

behavioral health clinics and centers. In addition, several other sites provided an array of services, including maternity and nutrition support for women and children, health education, home care, programs for seniors and immigrants, citizenship and ESL classes, child development, nursing and assisted-living, low-income housing, education, youth employment and violence prevention, service learning, youth boxing, radio, and more.

Board of Directors

Dear Friends:

On behalf of the Board of Directors, staff, and our many supporters and partners, we are pleased to present this annual report for fiscal year 2011-12.

This past year Sea Mar Community Health Centers faced significant challenges due to cutbacks in funding that came with stagnant state and national economies.

At the same time, Sea Mar continued to grow by adding new programs and services, including medical and behavioral health services, WIC and maternity support services, education and youth services, and a radio station.

In 2011-12, more than 212,000 individuals were served and total encounters exceeded 912,000. Financially, our operations were positive and our balance sheet remains strong, as shown in this report.

We attribute the health of our organization to our staff and volunteers and we thank all of them for their continued hard work and dedication.

Sincerely,

Rogelio Riojas Greg Ma, ChairmanPresident and CEO Board of Directors

In 2011-12, Sea Mar continued to expand its broad network of medical, dental, behavioral health and preventive health services. With the addition of the Tillicum and Des Moines medical clinics and Gig Harbor and Vancouver behavioral health centers, Sea Mar employed more than 216 professional providers in nine Washington counties.

Some program expansion occurred in non-traditional service areas. In 2011, Sea Mar purchased a radio station with a rich history of serving farm workers in eastern Washington through radio and community services. In addition, new youth services are aimed at violence prevention, employment, college readiness, and leadership.

Radio KDNA, La Voz del CampesinoRadio KDNA is the only full-time educational Spanish-language public radio station in the United States. Radio KDNA is owned by the

Northwest Communities Education Center, a non-profit corporation in affiliation with Sea Mar Community Health Centers. Radio KDNA broadcasts on a frequency of 91.9 FM with an effective radiated power of 20,000 watts from studios

located in Granger, Washington. The station produces quality radio programming to help inform and educate its largely Spanish-speaking listeners to help them overcome barriers of literacy, language, discrimination, poverty, and illness. In this way, Radio KDNA empowers people to more fully participate in a multicultural society.

Radio KDNA began broadcasting in November 1979. Six months after going on the air, the station’s first big news story was on May 18, 1980, when Mount Saint Helens erupted.Through Radio KDNA, Spanish speakers were informed of developments and they learned how to protect themselves from the ash.

In 2009, Radio KDNA celebrated 30 years of broadcasting in the Yakima Valley.

Education, Employment and Youth ServicesIn 2010-11, Sea Mar began providing education, employment and youth services in partnership with the City of Seattle, Everett Community

College and Monroe School District. Sea Mar was selected by various funders to continue youth education and employment programs previously conducted by the Center for Career

Alternatives (CCA), a well-known human service organization located in the Rainier Valley in Seattle. Youth services are offered by staff located at Sea Mar’s Cannon House in the Central District of Seattle, and a youth re-engagement program is provided at Everett Community College.

• Youth Employment — Seattle The Seattle Youth Employment Program is conducted in partnership with the City of Seattle and Metrocenter YMCA. The program provides low-income youth, ages 16-18, who are behind in school with opportunities to improve their academic skills in the summer while they participate in a paid work experience. Students also benefit from workshops during the school year that help them with tutoring, attendance, job-finding skills, SAT preparation and post-secondary education exploration.

• Youth Violence Prevention Initiative — Seattle Funded by the City of Seattle, this program provides intensive case-management

services to youth ages 12-17. Services target youth involved in the juvenile justice system, middle school students at risk of suspension, and those impacted by violence in the community. Trained guidance counselors re-engage youth in education, help resolve court issues, and connect youth with resources such as drug/alcohol counseling, family counseling, health services, and housing support. Students also receive employment assistance, post-secondary exploration opportunities, and community service opportunities.

• Youth Re-Engagement — EverettThe Youth Re-engagement (U3) program was created to provide educational opportunities for youth ages 16-21 who have dropped out of high

school. This dual-credit program enables students to concurrently work toward a high school diploma and a college degree. When students enroll in the U3 program, tuition, class fees and books are paid. They receive intensive and holistic case management services,

including tutoring, advising, career counseling, and use of all campus resources.

• Peer Leaders and Ambassadors In 2011, a student leadership and service-learning program, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, involved students in college

awareness and readiness activities, leadership, civic engagement, and community service.

Since 1995, Sea Mar has hosted a charity golf tournament with proceeds used for college scholarships, holiday toys for children, and housing assistance. Due to the tournament, more than $1 million in college scholarships has been awarded to children of farm-worker families; more than a half million toys have been distributed to needy children during Sea Mar’s annual holiday parties; and funds are used to assist formerly homeless, low-income, and farm-worker families through Sea Mar’s César Chávez Vil-lage in Seattle and La Posada East and West in Pasco, Wash.

Sea Mar is deeply indebted to the many volunteers and donors who have supported the charity golf tournament and other programs and activities that benefit needy in-dividuals and families. Thanks to all of the generous donors and sponsors listed in the 2011-12 annual report.
