The SFT Series WRC-C1 is a unique water remedial system that can be installed at sites that potentially pose the risk of discharging creosote and hydrocarbon contaminated surface water into the environment, such as electrical or telecom pole and rail sleeper storage facilities.

Designed and developed for the removal of hydrocarbons and other contaminates typically found in creosote. The system utilises a number of proprietary filters for removing polluting compounds found in EU specification creosote, these contaminates include hydrocarbons, phenols and cresols.

The WRC-C1 remedial chamber allows surface water to be processed at up to 300 litres per minute and retains 35 litre of hydrocarbon while removing contaminates to acceptable Environmental Agency levels prior to discharge.

The system can be used to replace or to complement oil water separation systems where it is essential to prevent pollutants from entering the environment. The product has a versatile design and is made specifically to operate and function in industrial site environments.

The systems are built to operate to Class 1 oil water separator guidelines. The system is a sealed unit that can be used in high risk flood areas and can be either installed at new or retrofitted to existing sites.

Environment Agency - Pollution Prevention Guidelines PPG3 April 2006“Class 1 separators are designed to achieve a discharge concentration of less than 5 mg/litre of oil under standard test conditions. These separators are required for discharges to surface water drains and the water environment.”

A full retention separator is used where a regular threat exists of oil contamination or a foreseeable risk of significant spillage. The SFT Series WRC-C1 water remedial system has been designed to process and treat the full flow of water that can be delivered by the drain system. The ‘full flow’ is normally equivalent to the flow generated by a rainfall intensity of 65mm/hour.

Pollutant Filtration

Unlike traditional oil water separators, the SFT WRC-C1 water remedial system also targets emulsified, dilute and dissolved phased hydrocarbons. Phenols and Creosols (the carcinogenic element of creosote) are captured within carefully selected activated carbon filters. Processed water is also passed through a biological chamber where enzymes are utilised to break down dilute contaminates.

The system uses integral SFT HRF-80 hydrocarbon and sediment cartridge filters which discharge water to ≤0.1 ppm oil concentration.

Its design ensures that it is completely unaffected by floods or flash flooding.

As part of the design evaluation we establish and consider the flow rates of a potential spill delivered to the remedial system from the drains and the oil storage requirements. Larger sites may require a process holding chamber installing upstream of the remedial system as an means of managing flow rate to optimise the efficiency and size of the system.

Operational Process

The water remedial system is a weir design with water entry and exit on opposite chamber wall sides.

Phased Filtration:1. Chamber 1 contains brushes that start the removal process of

larger sediment particles as they pass through to the next chamber.

2. Chamber 2 has a variety of foams configured with reducing pore sizes to capture finer sediment particulate. A specialised pulp based media contained within the casing is set above the foam as an initial trap for contaminants such as creosote, hydrocarbon and phenols.

3. Chamber 3 is a void of water to create a head pressure for the filters located in the following two chambers.

4. Chamber 4 contains two HRC-80 filters that capture and encapsulate hydrocarbon liquids.

5. Chamber 5 contains two activated carbon filters delivering an even finer level to remove any dissolve phase hydrocarbons and additional contaminants, such as Phenolic compounds.

6. Chamber 6 has a bioremediation block (kept solid by natural waxes) containing micro-organisms and other ingredients, designed to be suspended in wastewater contaminated with hydrocarbons and 1” PVC tubes to encourage and facilitate growth of algae to further assist in the reduction of potential trace elements of pollution.
