The San Diego Symphony is committed to serving all segments of our very

diverse community. Each season, the San Diego Symphony presents

approximately 40 concerts and 300 related events, reaching more than

61,000 students from kindergarten through adult. Our programs are

designed to appeal to children and align with Common Core standards.

San Diego Symphony musicians take an active role in developing and presenting

our programs,making symphonic music exciting and accessible to all.

Two performances each day at the newly renovated Symphony Hall in the Jacob’s Music CenterTickets are $5 per student with one free ticket furnished for an adult chaperone per every ten student tickets paid. BERTON FAMILY YOUNG PEOPLE’S CONCERTS

Young Person’s Guide to the OrchestraOctober 16 & 17, 2013 (10am and 11:30am each day)Woodwind, brass, strings and percussion - these four families make up the orchestra. Hear how each instrument sounds and learn how the families come together to make beautiful music. For Pre-School – 2nd GradeLinda and Shearn Platt Kinder Koncerts conducted by Ken-David Masur These chamber orchestra concerts, performed in community venues around the County, are designed to introduce the youngest listeners to classical music, to the instruments of the orchestra and to the live concert experience.

For Elementary GradesMeet a MusicianSan Diego Symphony members visit classrooms to speak about life as a professional musician, demonstrate his/her instrument and answer student questions.

Ensemble PerformancesSmall ensembles from the Symphony visit groups of students at their school. The musicians discuss playing mechanics, sound production and instrument families in these interactive performances that relate to other subjects in the school curriculum.

“Hot Shots” Young Artist CompetitionSan Diego Symphony’s “Hot Shots” Young Artist Competition recognizes young, talented musicians from San Diego County. Along with a cash prize donated by the Advocates for Classical Music, winners of this annual concerto competition may be invited to perform with the orchestra during the following season.

“Best and Brightest”This free annual concert features some of our community’s most talented young orchestra musicians playing alongside members of the San Diego Symphony.

Dr. William and Evelyn Lamden Master Class ProgramMasterclasses provide opportunities for more advanced music students to be evaluated and coached by a San Diego Symphony musician or visiting guest artist while other students listen and learn.

Instrumental CoachGroups of young musicians in school orchestra and band programs can learn from a pro! Symphony musicians bring their knowledge, expertise and enthusiasm to students during sectional rehearsals at the school site.

Open RehearsalsHigh school and college-aged students have an exciting and unique opportunity to attend a rehearsal of a Jacobs Masterworks concert. This is a wonderful way for students to see how the conductor and musicians work together to create the highest quality musical performance and artistic experience.

Student Rush Tickets Full-time students, aged 35 and under with current ID, may enjoy any San Diego Symphony concert at Symphony Hall for just $10! Join the fun!

Family Festival 2pm at Symphony HallThe San Diego Symphony gives families an opportunity to learn about classical music together. These fun and interactive concerts help youngsters ages 4-12, parents and other family members discover and enjoy the power and beauty of symphonic music. Pre-concert activities begin at 1pm.

PROGRAMS FOR FAMILIES is a two-year audience engagement initiative that will depart from the San Diego Symphony’s traditional approach to community engagement by inviting residents of historically underserved neighborhoods to participate in the creation and performance of art. Music, stories and dance have been contributed by people of all ages and backgrounds. These submissions will be woven into a multi-media piece that will be performed for the public free of charge. Performances of the new work are planned for the Summer of 2014 in three community venues and Symphony Hall. What’s the Score?Enlightening pre-concert presentations hosted by Nuvi Mehta provide context for and musical excerpts from the day’s program beginning 45 minutes before each Jacobs Masterworks concert.

Classical Edge 7:30pm at Symphony HallClassical Edge is a dynamic new series weaving science, history and the arts together to explore the interplay of music and the human condition. Presenting leading scientists, authors and a variety of guest artists, Nuvi Mehta takes us through multimedia journeys of discovery with preeminent speakers, solo performances and, of course, the San Diego Symphony! Lasting a little over an hour, each concert is followed by an after-party and a chance to meet the soloists and special guests! Intriguing, insightful and entertaining, it’s Classical Edge! Live.
