SEDGEFIELD THE TOWN FOR ALL SEASONS

If "going nowhere slowly" is your aim, then Sedgefield,

situated between Knysna and George on the Garden

Route, is now officially accredited as South Africa’s

slowest town, and with this new title is consolidating its

position as a prime retirement town in the country.

Cittaslow, an international organisation based in Italy,

has accepted Sedgefield as the first town in Africa to be

part of an illustrious club of slow towns in countries the

world over. These are towns which celebrate quality of

life and diversity of cultures, conserve and promote the

uniqueness of their environment and also seek to uplift

the local community. A Cittaslow population cannot be

over 50 000 while Sedgefield’s hardly exceeds 15 000.

BANK PRE-APPROVALS

People who have applied for mortgage finance from a

bank may receive a notification telling them that they

have pre-qualified for a bond worth a particular amount

but this should not be taken as a guarantee that the bank

will grant a bond once the offer-to-purchase has been

signed and accepted.

Many buyers take this pre-qualification as a pledge from

the bank that it will grant the bond and this is simply not

the case.

What happens is that when the bond application is

submitted the banks do a much more thorough

investigation into the client’s financial position and, in

many cases, they then change their minds and decide

not to grant the loan.

Gangsters, racketeers, shady characters and drug lords

have been finding it increasingly difficult to engage in

money laundering with the phasing in over the last few

years of the provisions of the Financial Intelligence

Centre Act (FICA) 38 of 2001.

As from the 4th of October casinos, motor vehicle

dealers and attorneys were placed under an obligation

to verify the identity of payers and to report all cash

transactions over R25 000. This will be extended to all

remaining accountable and reporting institutions such

as estate agents on the 1st of December.

NEWS ON THE FICA LAW

FASTER WAYS TO GET OUT OF DEBT

An estimated 47% of credit-active South Africans are in

arrears with their repayments and the huge backlogs in

the country’s courts are delaying the legal processes

and preventing judgements against credit defaulters

from being granted.

A new set of voluntary measures between debt

counsellors and banks have been unveiled that will

streamline the debt review process and determine a

debt repayment package through mediation between the

consumers and their creditors.

The proposed measures include greater transparency

between credit providers and debt counsellors along

with revised repayment terms for over-indebted creditors.

Landlords and letting agents are benefiting from an

increase in rents thanks to growing demand for

properties in the sector, it has been found.

According to the new Residential Lettings Survey from

Rics, there has been a decrease in the supply of new

properties going up for rental, which led to a rise in rents

in the three months to the end of October 2010.

Indeed, 39 per cent more surveyors reported seeing an

increase in rents than a fall, the highest level since the

second quarter of 2007.

JOHANNESBURG IMPRESS THE PRESS

of Brand South Africa. It kicked off on 28 November and

2011 SEMI'S AT LEAST FOR THE BOKS

London – Nick Mallett does not share the pessimism

about South African rugby, and believes Peter de

Villiers’s Springboks are headed for next year’s World

Cup semi-finals with New Zealand and Australia.

“I think the three Southern Hemisphere sides will

definitely make the semi-finals. It should be between

England and France for the other spot,” said Mallett.

“New Zealand have home advantage and are the form

team, while Australia are the most improved side this

year. England have stepped forward in spite of the

beating they took from South Africa.

MAKE A STUDY OF YOUR HOME INSURRANCE

You probably check on your car and household contents

insurance at least once a year, but what about the policy

covering damage to your home or its complete loss in

the event of a fire, flood or other catastrophe?

If this has not been adjusted as the value of your home

increased, you will most likely be underinsured, which

means that any claim you make will only be partially paid

out, and that if you lose your home to disaster, you may

only be able to replace it with a much lesser property –

although you will still have to pay off the home loan on

the original home.

FASTER WAYS TO GET OUT OF DEBT

An estimated 47% of credit-active South Africans are in

arrears with their repayments and the huge backlogs in

the country’s courts are delaying the legal processes

and preventing judgements against credit defaulters

from being granted.

A new set of voluntary measures between debt

counsellors and banks have been unveiled that will

streamline the debt review process and determine a

debt repayment package through mediation between the

consumers and their creditors.

The proposed measures include greater transparency

between credit providers and debt counsellors along

with revised repayment terms for over-indebted creditors.

2011 SEMI'S AT LEAST FOR THE BOKS

London – Nick Mallett does not share the pessimism

about South African rugby, and believes Peter de

Villiers’s Springboks are headed for next year’s World

“I think the three Southern Hemisphere sides will

definitely make the semi-finals. It should be between

England and France for the other spot,” said Mallett.

“New Zealand have home advantage and are the form

year. England have stepped forward in spite of the
