PART I: P1 Device Guide
1. Device Overview
The DEEPSOUND P1
Seongsan Lab’s DEEPSOUND P1 device is targeted for providing a high quality – low
cost, portable and highly efficient, user-friendly, ultrasound inspection using PAUT
technology with various functions.
The P1 is a mobile Phased-Array device that well suited for:
Ultrasound Testing (UT) is used for a flaw detection, size measure, and
imaging. PAUT technology has the ability to modify electronically the acoustic
probe characteristics.
The encoder saves collected data and improves the difficulty of data storage
when the UT is used. The device also enables data collection in the form of 2D-
images along availability of A-Scan, B- Scan and C-Scan.
1.2 SPECIAL FEATURES
Special features of the DEEPSOUND P1:
Phased Array UT technology with simple UT
Time of Flight Diffraction Technique (TOFD) included
7.0 inch Touch screen with high-resolution LCD
Bipolar Pulse Wave + Burst Wave
Easy scan setup through various Wizard functions (Channel Group, calibration etc)

Acquisition of data by encoder and Sectorial scan view, B scan and C scan view – In UT technique, it is quite difficult to save test data and illustrate B and C scan view using an encoder. The advantage of DEEPSOUND P1 device improved this point, thus the user may save acquired data collected by an encoder in computer file format, copy the saved data through USB and read the test result from PC.
Due to disadvantages of PAUT, ultrasound signals are provided to examine in a one-dimensional form. Therefore in order to improve the need for much time, knowledge, and hands-on experience in determination of defects, the encoder is input and one Scan and C-Scan data in real-time. These features are very helpful in determining defects and helping to make defective analysis over cracks easier for even inexperienced users.
Note: In this document, hardware controls that you press to activate are referred to as keys, the word button is reserved for software control.

2.3 Scan View Screen
The Scan view screen area displays the various ultrasound data views and layouts.
A scan is a 2-D graphical representation of ultrasound data with a ruler or scale corresponding to the horizontal and vertical axis. For example, an A-scan and a C-scan are two different types of scans.
A view is a volumetric representation of a part, which includes signal overlays. Like a scan, a view has two axes. However, instead of being related to a specific group, a view is linked to the part. A signal that originates from a single group or from multiple groups can be displayed without affecting the view dimensions.
A layout is an organization of one or more scans and views. For example, the A-B-C layout is a graphical arrangement of an A-scan, a B-scan, and a C-scan.
View Point of view Axis content
A Scan Looking down on the
material Amplitude versus US axis
B Scan Side Scan axis versus US axis
C Scan Top Index axis versus Scan axis
D Scan End Index axis versus US axis
S Scan Side Index axis versus US axis
Table: Scan view screen explanation
A-scan View
This is the view window that underlies all other view windows. Generates an ultrasonic beam to indicate the received ultrasonic amplitude or waveform. In the signal, the peak corresponds to a reflector within the specimen or a discontinuous reflected signal. Generally, the peaks at the beginning and end of an ultrasonic axis generally correspond to the reflected signals on the surface and bottom of the specimen.
B-scan
2-D side representation of the part showing US data with the scan length on one axis, and the US path on the other axis.
C-scan
2-D side representation of the part showing US data with the scan length on one axis, and index length on the other axis. One of the available parameters (for example,
DEEPSOUND P1: Complete Guide Release 1.1, 2018

amplitude) is projected on the index-scan plan for each point (pixel).
D-scan
2-D side representation of the part showing index and US data the scan length on one axis, and the US path on the other axis.
S-scan (Phased Array only)
2-D representation of US data presetting all the A-scans generated by the focal laws in an angular sector or sectorial range in order to create a cross section of the part. The A-scans are represented by lines on which the amplitude is color-coded, and they are corrected for delay and true depth so that their positions are accurate relative to the US axis.
Rulers
Each ruler/scale in filled with a dedicated color to help you identify the axis on the various views. Following table provides a list of the available rulers/scales, and their associated colors and functions.
The basic color is attributed to each axis. The axis appears in various tints of the basic color. The lightest tint corresponds to the raw data representation. Progressively darker tints correspond to increasing data correction complexity relative to the axis. A darker tint is also used for an axis that appears as a reference, in which case the zoom bar is not available.

2.5.4 Mini Toolbar- DAC/TCG ( )
Tap on ( ) button to open DAC/TCG menu bar. Tap on buttons to change the setting.
DAC mode
The echo height of reflectors of size depends on which probe using, mainly cause of the sound attenuation in the material.
DAC – Distance-Amplitude Curve record using defined references, represents these effects graphically.
The DAC function enables:
Visualize the DAC of the reference echoes.
Peak the echo of a probable flaw. If necessary, increase the gain until the echo exceeds the gate threshold.
Activate the TCG as described above, however, with a simultaneous display of the TCG/DAC function.
For about DAC/TCG methods, please see the Appendix C.
Activate the TCG (Time-Corrected Gain) to increase the gain in distance-dependent mode so that all reference echoes reach the same screen height.
Index menu appears as the following figure. Tap on DAC button to open further tool options. Peak the echo of a probable flaw, and move the gate so that the echo data are evaluated.
Determine the sound path in the display boxes for readings and, in addition, the reduced projection distance as well as the flaw depth if you are using angle beam probes. Whether or not the echo is recordable, can be immediately seen from the A-scan.
Determining can be done through dB amount by which the response threshold is exceeded: Adjust the gate threshold exactly to the intersection point of the curve with the probable flow indication.
