Education is a zero sum game. We have a finite amountof time and once it’s used up, there’s no more. Everysecond a student is doing something they shouldn’t bein a lesson, we are losing them. This sounds harsh, I know. Children do have the right todaydream, rebel, fight us, make friends, and so on. BUT,as teachers, our job is to try our best to rein in thoseinclinations, or even use them purposefully, for the fewshort hours we get each day and push as much energyas possible into the pursuit of expanding knowledgeand skills. That expansion should leave students less afraid in thefuture of new things, and may even open areas ofpassion and interest. It’s a good power that we yield.

But, we don’t always do it effectively.

In particular, the starts of lessons can be tough. Thirtyindividual learners, each with their own pathway to yourdoor, each bringing their own anxieties and excitements, all need to come together within a few minutes and beoperating as one body. We are basically trying toperform a magic trick of turning lone wolves intoan ant colony.

It is this analogy – wolves into ants – that made Laurafirst think about TouchPaper Problem 5.

Question is: How do we do it? http://touchpaperproblems.com/

Touchpaper Problem #5 – Helping students enter classrooms eectively

How can we develop effective learners?“To develop effective learners, we must first define what we mean by the term.Effective learners gain understanding of the individual and social processesnecessary to become effective - not only through the acquisition of particularstrategies, but the monitoring and reviewing of learning to see whether strategiesare effective. Underlying this is the belief that learning is an active process. Effective learnersrelate new experiences to existing meaning and in the process may accommodateand assimilate new ideas. Past, present and future are connected and after some unlearning and relearning may be needed. Effective learners are actively involvedin metacognition; the process of planning, monitoring and reflecting.

And how do we do this? By avoiding quick fix strategies and doing it in a measured, informed way; based on deep learning, research and pedagogy.”

Closing the gap professional learning conference......the whole experience has left me so inspired!!

115 days: spent laughing

Every single day, you do the same things over andover, whether you realize it or not. We are allcreatures of habit, one way or another. But haveyou ever really thought about how much time youspend on your routine? You dedicate way moretime to brushing your teeth and hair than you'dever imagine. "Where did the time go?"

How Much Time Do You Spend In YourLifetime Doing Normal Activities.

Sleeping For 26 Years?!

Where does the time go?

Many congratulations Edge Hill and to you also. Youhave completed your first phase in your home school. Can’t wait to see you all again soon. Good luck...............

2 weeks writing things down that I’d never actually do136 days: women spend getting ready.
