Book Review

Delamere School

‘I've just finished reading a series called Slated, by Teri Terry. This is a dystopian book about children under the age of 16 who get

'slated' if they've committed a bad deed. Being slated is the process where all your memories

are wiped blank, causing you to have no memories of what you have done in your past life. A young girl named Kyla has been slated.

Despite this, her memories are not staying buried and she is determined to discover why and how people are being slated, and who is

behind the surgery’.

BBC Young Reporter is helping young people share their stories of how coronavirus is impacting on their lives.

The project offers 11-18 year olds across the UK the chance to report with BBC programmes and platforms.

What sort of stories do they want to hear?

They are looking for stories that are original and really reflect how coronavirus is uniquely impacting on young people's lives.

Is there something in particular that has affected your family or community that hasn't been reported on yet?

What is helping you dealing with the new way we are all having to live our lives?

Be Word-Rich and improve your vocabulary

A robust vocabulary improves all areas of communication — listening, speaking, reading and writing. Vocabulary is critical to your success and we are therefore going to share with you some words for you to learn and start using!

Peripheral  Synonyms (words with a similar meaning): outlying – outer – on the edges/outskirts – fringes - border – surrounding – circumferential  Definition: Relating to or situated on the outside or edges of something. Jake could thought he could see the figure of a man in his peripheral vision. The sports teacher made sure the cones were arranged on the peripheral areas of the football pitch so the students could see clearly where they could play up to. Antonym (opposite meaning): Inside – middle – in front – in the center

Evaluate (Synonyms: assess – work out the value – rate – estimate – appraise – analyse – get the measure of – check something out – gauge – work out) Definition:  To form or create an idea of the amount, number, size or value of something; to assess. To investigate a situation and conclude, based on your findings. The school’s headteacher had to evaluate the impact of the recent storms which had caused some of the classrooms to become flooded. Rosie evaluated the damage caused by the party.  Antonym (opposite meaning): Ignore, take no notice, show a lack of interest.
