1 From the Helm…. Bud Albright- Hiram I. Bearss Det. #089 From the Commandant This will be my last posting as your Commandant. It has been a great four years for me and I hope that in some small way I contributed to the growth of the Hiram I Bearss Detachment. Anything good that has taken place under my tour of duty would not have happened without you the members of our detachment and friends of the de- tachment. I would hope that you will give my replacement the same help and support that you have given me. Having said that here is what is going on within our detach- ment. We had another good gun show and our BBQ went well. The next gun show is June 4-5-6. As usual we can use some help so when Jesus calls on you to sign up to help please respond. We can still use help on BBQ Saturday with the next one being April 17 th . Even if you can’t spend the whole day a couple of hours will help. Col. Haislip will be out of town the day before and Gary could use some help in preparing the meals. Contact Gary if you can help. That will be on Friday the 16th. Due to a lot of commitments the detachment has in June we will not be doing a BBQ in June. The state convention (which we are hosting) planning is coming along. At this time what we need is ads for the con- vention booklet. Get out and sell some ads. Contact Don Myers or one of your officer’s for more info. The detachment did a memorial service for Stephen Hansell on Sunday the 28 th of March at the barracks and it was well received by the family and friends of Stephen and they asked me to pass on their heartfelt thanks for the de- tachment doing the service and allowing them the use of our bar- racks. It is a great book that tells the West Point story, in addition to some seri- ous Army training of a young officer in Ranger School and Jump School, in addition to having been selected as a Rhodes scholar at Oxford where he met the love of his life. Mullaney served in combat in Afghanistan and rose to the rank of captain. He also came back home and taught at not only at West Point but the Naval Academy as well. What disturbed me about this book is that in one combat situation he lost a soldier (that may or may not have been prevented) in addition to a CIA type soldier and a Afghan soldier. This is where the Unforgiving Minute theme came from. And the book goes on and on about these three deaths, especially his one soldier that was the only man he lost in a years tour. Perhaps I've become to cold-hearted for having served in too much combat but I just wanted to reach out and shake the crap out of this young captain and tell him about the reality of war. Yeah, he had some men wounded, some fairly seri- ous, but bringing his entire unit back to the States with one KIA - my God, how I envy this author. Is this the way war is going on now days? Our offi- cer's actually crying over the death of one man? I did not cry at any time in combat, I saved that after I got home to the USA. Simply put YOU DON'T HAVE TIME TO CRY IN COMBAT AND CONTINUE TO BE AN EF- FECTIVE LEADER. I experienced an entire platoon of Marine infantrymen going down in flames in Vietnam, either wounded or dead, including my platoon leader and me as platoon sergeant. I'm just damn glad that this au- thor wasn't my company commander because he obviously would not have been able to carry on with 10 Marine dead and 40 wounded from one of his platoons. Plus, the rest of his company was shot to pieces. I admire the outstanding education this author received but OCS and West Point must not be teaching its officers how to handle losses and I find that offen- sive. PLANK PROGRAM- By Don Myers I wish that many of our members that have not visited our Marine Barracks Indianapolis would take the time to drop by on a Monday evening or Thursday evening or call us to have someone be aboard at any time you choose. Somebody is usually aboard each Saturday but this is not routine except for our BBQ's. The reason I'd like members who have not visited before is three-fold; number one take a look at what our Worker Bee's have accomplished in little over one-year in taking a one-time old church building and making it into a great Marine Corps League meeting hall. Number two is for a member to visit our large Museum Room to get a sense of our Corps' history. (Actually, the entire building is now a Museum to a great extent considering the various pictures on our bulkheads. And lastly I'd really like folks to see the wonderful PLANK OWNERS WALL we have showing the planks and brass name plates honoring those who have contributed in the four Plank areas we have to purchase our barracks build-ing. What is especially interesting is the many IN MEMORIAL name plates or IN HONOR OF name plates that you will see on the PLANK WALL. What a great way to make a tribute to a deceased Marine or to honor a Marine or particular unit. Drop on by - and feel free to give me a call and I'll meet you there so you can look around. 317-786-4649
