“Every Basket Begins with a Walk in the Woods...”Matt Tommey

Sculptural baskets infuse any space with a handcrafted design element unlike any other available on the market today. These woven works of art by renown basketry artist Matt Tommey bring the timeless energy of nature together with contemporary design in a way that celebrates the simple beauty of the natural world.

Each piece of Matt’s work is truly one of a kind. There is no machine work, mass production is impossible and the materials he uses are unavailable in the marketplace for purchase by anyone. Handcrafted from locally harvested materials within the mountains of Southern Appalachia, these unique creations are beautiful reflections of the natural world from which they arise.

the beauty of basketsMany basketry artists work with import-ed, machine-processed reed from Asia. Not Matt. It’s the adventure of harvest-ing and preparing the materials that connects Matt to his work and inspires his unique design aesthetic.

For over 20 years he as worked exclu-sively in a variety of invasive plant materials that call the southeastern region of the United States home including kudzu vine, honeysuckle, tulip poplar and mimosa. In addition, Matt incorporates mountain laurel branches, handmade black walnut dye, recycled copper and even encaustic wax to give his baskets a high-end look that reflects the quality of his crafts-manship and complements the elegant environments these baskets call home.

For many consumers not familiar with the contemporary use of basketry in modern interior design, baskets can evoke visions of functional containers from a by-gone area. They may have never seen examples of sculptural baskets and might not have a context for how these vessels may be used within their space. However, with the professional guidance of interior designers, builders, architects and artists, consum-ers can begin to understand the opportunity to incorporate this fine, handmade craft into their residential, civic or commercial space.

Matt really enjoys the collaborative process of working with design professionals. Tommey says:

“When considering incorporating these sculptural art baskets into a space, it’s important to let the client get a feel for the work. One of the easiest ways to do this is through a studio visit. Our studio in Asheville North Carolina’s River Arts District is open Monday - Saturday from 10-4pm or by appointment for your convenience. When you set up an appointment to come by with your client, I’ll be happy to give you a studio tour, explain my creative process and even show you some new work to help get the creative juices flowing. Sometimes you may find a piece or collection of pieces in stock that fit your needs. However, if you don't find exactly what you’re looking for we can discuss your exact design requirements, choose materials, set a timeline and budget for your specific project and if necessary, schedule a time for me to visit the space.”

“My handcrafted baskets are a whimsical collaboration of traditional weaving techniques, vines, bark and recycled metal. Since the early 1990’s, my interpreta-tion has offered a heartfelt nod to my roots in Appalachian basketry while offer-ing a contemporary expression that is all my own. My most recent work focuses on the use of a wide variety of southeastern invasive species, encaustic wax and recycled metal in the creation of sculptural art vessels.

Every basket begins with a walk in the woods. I pay close attention to the mate-rials I choose while harvesting to ensure the most unique design features and highest quality. My unique artistic voice centers around the ability to speak the language of natural materials. By responding to nature and incorporating many different barks, vines, branches and recycled metal, I am able to create one-of-a-kind sculptural creations that merge my contemporary style and love for movement with the simple beauty of nature.”

Matt Tommey is a leader in contemporary craft and has served on the Board of Directors of the National Basketry Organization and Asheville, North Carolina’s River Arts District. In addition, Matt is a popular teacher at basketry conventions and schools including the John C. Campbell Folk School and Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts. He is a juried member of the prestigious Southern Highland Craft Guild and Piedmont Craftsmen. In 2010, Matt was listed as an “American Artist Under 40” by the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Renwick Gallery. He has won awards and exhibited his work in the United States and abroad.
