Newsletter of the Sunshine Coast Rowing Club — Autumn Edition

RIVER t-OAR-k

Welcome to our Autumn edition of ‘RIVER t-OAR-k’. Yes, it is the season of the fall as the Americans call it, but as we can all vouch for, it’s been more like summer…even at 5:OO am for our on-water sessions.

In the shed, Rod has been busy enabling the Harley to be fitted with quick-release riggers for both sculling and sweep, and he also hopes to complete the same tasks on the Plummer before the State Masters at Coomera.

Our Committee has received what seems like a very reasonable quote from Fair Dinkum Sheds for the extension, so hopefully by the time of our next newsletter we may have some positive news on that front.

Rowing Queensland…for reasons unexplained at time of going to press…has changed the order of events for the Masters…unexpected because the same program had been in vogue for the past few years. It did necessitate compulsory changes to our crews and boat allocations, but Colleen is working through it.

Appropriately then good luck to all our competitors who are taking on the State Masters at Coomera.

We’ll have a full report in our next issue.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

As we are now entering the regatta season I would like to take this opportunity to wish all competitors the best of luck and a vote of thanks for representing the club.

Colleen, Ted, Rod and Lofty have been tireless in preparing the boats arranging the crews and getting the boats to the Regattas as they come up.

Cristie Stoddart and Simone Brown had a very unfortunate incident at the GPS regatta just recently which was not from anything they had done wrong but submerged pickets on a course that was too shallow for the event and terrible weather conditions. The double scull is being repaired by Ted Hale and we hope to have this back in the shed by the end of April.

As we move forward with extensions to the shed we are currently awaiting the finalised quote from a building company.

We had introduced Ezidebit facility to assist members with the payment of their annual club fees. Unfortunately, some members have thought that this means they have a monthly membership. This is not the case as our constitution (as it does for many capital intensive clubs) requires an annual membership. Hence I thought it prudent to make mention of that in this season's newsletter so that all members are aware that it is an annual membership and if for any reason you are absent from rowing no refund of your membership or discontinuing of Ezidebit setup can be sought. This is after careful consideration by the committee of the finances of the club and our constitutional duties.

On a happier note we start the next 'Learn to Row' course on Saturday the 18th April and look forward to introducing more members following the 8 week course.

Happy rowing and look forward to seeing you on the water.

A big thanks to all past and new members for embracing our club and for their timely payments of fees.

The club now has 64 financial members (41 competitive, 22 recreational and 1 junior). Of these 20 members have chosen the Ezidebit payment system, so not only did we get a big cash injection in January but we have a cash flow through to October. The club has a very healthy cash position of approx $50,000, no debt and very manageable overheads. Our aim is not to have a big bank account but to improve our equipment and capacity. The committee continues to investigate shed extensions which has many hurdles to overcome yet and have sought quotes to understand the cost. Once we have a clear picture of such costs, and if affordable will commit to the extension. The next priority is boats; a working group can then assess all equipment and develop a replacement/upgrade strategy. These decisions will be made during the course of this year.

TREASURER’S REPORT

2015 sees the club in a strong position, member wise and financially. This is the first year that the membership year was put on a calendar year basis rather than 12 months from joining. It has certainly made administration a lot easier and thanks should go to the previous treasurers, Jean Clark and Bernie McLaren for their time consuming and professional efforts. Last year the financial management system was converted to the Xero cloud based software which is more efficient than the previous system and a huge thanks to Bernie for the tremendous effort in instigating the change and imputting all the data across to Xero.

OAR D’OEUVRES

This column has always believed that this sport promotes longevity, so it’s a big congratulatory call to our own Richard Hyett, who celebrated his 80th birthday on the 29th March. Like all of us (especially after a few convivial sherbets!) the older we get, the better we rowed… Richard by all accounts is now a world champion! Well done, and hopefully many more to come. Incidentally, he may be out of action for a few months because he’s now getting his other hip replaced…perhaps more trouble walking through airport security!

The “missing-in-action” file has been given a work-out recently with Rod Hutchinson, Tony George and Ted Egerton all away for some R and R… Jean Clark has been covering more miles than the early settlers visiting the newly arrived twins in Melbourne… keep the pics coming Jean, while our co-editor Colleen has been sidelined after treatment to her troublesome lower back…hopefully now heading in the right direction.

GOOD RIDDANCE MARCIATropical Cyclone Marcia threatened and menaced much of Queensland recently, with Yeppoon and Rockhampton hardest hit. Damage was severe.

Our own problems luckily were not as major, with the giant storm downgraded to a tropical low as it passed through Maroochydore. Combined with high tides, it left three inches of water in the shed, but no fittings or boats were damaged. 416 mils of rain were recorded from Wednesday 18th to Saturday 21st February, with 100 falling in just 45 minutes between 7.15 and 8.00 am on the 21st! Wet! Wet! Wet!

NO BULL…SHARKS ARE IN THE WATER!

So you thought rowing was reasonably safe huh? Well, think again. Apart from on-water hazards (e.g. other sculls, fishermen, jet skiers, etc.) we DO have sharks beneath us.

Gold Coast sculler Trevor Carter told The Gold Coast Bulletin he was rowing on the Nerang River when a bull shark attacked his boat near the Chevron Island Bridge (see pic courtesy of the Gold Coast Bulletin).

A shark expert told the paper the bite marks on Trevor’s scull were “most likely from a 1.3 metre young bull shark”.

You’re going to need a bigger boat!

ROWER p-ROW FILE

In this edition we visit the realm of one of our more erudite masters rowers, and another of our truly international brigade of members in Sjoerd (Stuart) Dykstra. He pondered his replies carefully…here’s how he went!

BEGAN ROWING: 1959 at Haarlem in the Netherlands.

BEST WIN: At the World Masters Games in Turin…came home with two gold medals in a men’s eight and a mixed eight. As well, in 1964 I was proud to be selected as stroke of the club’s eight to compete at the Head of the Amstel in Amsterdam, an 8 km race with a top 10 finish in our division.

WORST MOMENT: Fell in (we can all relate to that!) but at Trinity Inlet in Cairns, which is infested with crocodiles!

FORMER CLUBS: Het Spaarne—Heemstede (Netherlands) and Cairns.

PROFESSION: Airline Captain…retired.

FAVOURITE MUSIC: Anything from jazz to classical, and music from the 50’s through to the 70’s.

Thanks to Sjoerd. Look out…you could be next!

PET HATES: I dislike people who cheat in sports.

FAVOURITE FOOD: Asian and anything Mediterranean.

FAVOURITE DRINK: Red wine.

FAVOURITE TV SHOW: Borgen…a Danish program on SBS.

CLUB CAPSWe have a new supply of Club Caps. Cost is $25. Anyone wishing to purchase one, please contact Colleen.

Brisbane & GPS RegattaA small contingent of Sunshine Coast rowers competed at the Brisbane & GPS Regatta on the 11th of April. Lake Coomera was living up to its (recent) reputation, with strong cross winds blowing crews around at the start line, making it tough to stay on the course in the choppy water. Considering the small numbers of club participants SCRC had a successful day of racing and here’s a few of the highlights.

Ted Egerton and Rod Hutchinson teamed up with Toowoong rowers and won gold in the Mens Masters F - J Eight. Ted also won gold in the Mens Masters F - J Coxed Four.

Finally, a big thank you should go to Lofty for towing the trailer for us both ways.

Links to the photos of the regatta are available here.

Also facing the rough conditions were Barry Black, John Greenhalgh, Peter Griffin and Des Pickering who fought hard in the Mens Masters D & E Double Scull and the Mens Masters D & E Quad Scull events. It was the first-ever regatta for Barry, John and Peter. Well done and many more to come!

The Womens Group 5 Quad Scull crew with Cristie Stoddart, Simone Brown, Rebecca Boyes and Csilla Faller stormed home to seal the deal with a gold medal, having held off a strong attempt from the Tweed crews in the last quarter of the race.

A special mention should go to Chip McKibben and Ian Luxford who will be representing Queensland at the Australian Masters Championships at Penrith in May. Their crew, the QLD Mens Masters Interstate Eight competed at the GPS Regatta by invitation in the Mens A-C Eight’s event, recording the fastest time by 10 seconds. This gives them valuable racing experience before the Nationals. Additionally, Chip and Ian won gold both in the Mens Masters A - C Pair and D - E Pair events. Chip also won the Division 2 race in the Mens Masters A - C Single Scull event, while Ian came second in the same race.

FUNDRAISING

Hot on the heels (well, almost!) of our successful BBQ stints at Bunnings and IGA, it was an even better turn-out of volunteers for the huge triathlon at Mooloolaba. A big thanks to Cathy Peterson for her outstanding recruiting efforts… how could we say no. Our efforts raised $1382 for our club.

Not quite sure the yellow shirts would have been the choice of color for many (see picture) but despite looking a bit like a collection of tweety birds, the whole effort seemed to work seamlessly, so well done to all who gave up their time.A special thanks too, to non-club members who also rocked-up… Will and Georgia Stoddart, Sarah Peterson, Dianne Possee, Brad Wilkinson, Chloe Hyde, Alisha Morgan, John Whiteoak, Paul Clark and Olivia Shipton.
