Think of ten things that make you smile – now you’ve got the makings for a noteworthy, time capsule layout about your life.

Your past hobbies and passions are just waiting to be documented in a place all their own.

Bursts of flowers, bright colours, and some subtle stitching tie together this layout about Roree Rumph’s precious little girl.

Hey Kermie – it’s not so hard being green. These days, eco-friendly scrapbooking can be quite the creative and rewarding endeavor.

Hello. I welcome you to April’s edition of Scrapbook Trends with a feeling of excitement and anticipation. This is because the sun is shining and we can feel, and see the first signs of spring. Noticing the first Snowdrop poke its head through indicates a season change for me; and boy, it’s been a long time coming.

Spring brings with it a burst of energy. In our house that means daytrips. Of course, my camera is always poised to capture those special moments. Which means, just as the weather warms up, I head back inside again with a SD card full of photos to scrap! I hope I am not the only one who does this.

In my family, spring also heralds the start of ‘birthday season’. First, my stepdad, then me, then my friend ....and so on. Do you get that too??? Clumps of birthdays and anniversaries all within a few short weeks. Our feature on birthday layouts (page 22) has some really beautiful layouts to help inspire us to document these events. I love the clever design of ‘Henry’s First Birthday’ by Ellen Sosnoski. Notice how she has made a party hat from patterned paper and used a tissue paper frill. It looks great!

Our feature on multi-photo layouts could also come in handy for my (anticipated) abundance of photos (page 42). Heidi Sonobul’s layout ‘Ride’ shows how good page design effortlessly allows for multiple photos on her layout. I love the use of circles across the page which includes a circular photo. Her use of a banner looks fabulous on the page too and is still a hot trend.

We have some fabulous mini albums in our feature starting on page 82. Alexis Hardy has used her album ‘Itty Bitty Pretty One’ to showcase her favourite spring photos. What a great idea to make a seasonal mini album. I think even I could manage four mini albums per year (and I am a slow scrapbooker!).

We have lined up a great showcase for you this month too. You may recognise a few of the names in there and admire their wonderful work. Don’t forget, all submissions are welcome for consideration to the Showcase. Please send a Jpeg of your layout to [email protected] and we could feature your work soon too.Have a very happy Easter,

Stampin’ Up! release their Mini catalogue April 1st. Amongst the new products, is the Spring inspired “Sweet Pea” collection, which includes a 12” x12” Patterned Paper Pad containing 48 double-sided patterned papers, some stitched felt and of course, some rubber stamps. These papers also co-ordinate with their current “Trendy Trees” stamps and include images of butterflies, flowers and birds. www.stampinup.co.uk

blank canvases (in the literal sense of the word) were everywhere at CHA. Whether it was Donna Downey’s canvas bags with Prima Marketing or these fabulous canvas items from the Canvas Home Basics range from Canvas Corp. But then, once you have your blank canvas, you then need to colour it with something! Now of course, you can ink it, paint it, stamp on it and stick things on it, but the biggest thing to be seen everywhere at CHA was spray mists. Lots of companies now have their spray ink version, but our favourite has to be the Tattered Angels range of Glimmer Mists. Now they have teamed up with Heidi Swapp for new colours, new stamps and new screens, we are well and truly sold!

This issue we have

selected a few favourites that we discovered

or revisited at the recent

CHA show in Anaheim,

California.

Top ten lists are one of my favourite ways to sneak a peek at real life. They are tiny time capsules – clear and concise, with a lot of information packed into a minimal space. (Not to mention they’ll be really fun to read years down the road.) So whether your list is

REAL lifeyour life as only you know it

about songs, vacation spots, books you’ve read this year, or even the best “Why-I-didn’t-finish-my-homework-because” excuses from your high-schooler, document those little things that make your life uniquely yours.

By jEri HuiSH

Cheryl went with a family theme for her top ten list – I love how she placed the list items around the edges, and reserved the centre spot for her husband and son. A grid of patterned paper strips creates clever little places for bits of journaling, and is also a great way to use up scraps of leftover papers.

IT bEGINS & ENDS WITH YOU & YOU by Cheryl AmeteweePatterned paper: BasicGrey, Creative Imaginations, me & my BIG ideas, Sassafras; Stickers: American Crafts, Bo Bunny (ampersand, photo corners), Doodlebug Design, Sassafras (flowers); Pen: Uni-Ball Signo

TIP: Write with a white pen to help set a bright, happy mood on your page.

18

TOP 10 PLACES I WANT TO VISIT by Kelly PurkeyCardstock: Bazzill Basics; Patterned paper, brads, stickers, rub ons: American Crafts; Die cut number paper: KI Memories; Stamps: Hero Arts; Ink: Memories; Punches, corner rounder: Fiskars

TIP: A sheet of die cut number paper makes for a subtly intriguing background, especially when layered tone-on-tone.

For a different spin on the top ten theme, make a list of things you would like to try, see, or accomplish. On this layout about the places Kelly would most like to visit, she used a picture of herself in a car; a fun touch for a travel-themed page. And I love how the bright colours of the embellishments stand out against the bold black of the background paper.

18

19

MY TOP 10 RIGHT NOW by Jillian DeilingCardstock: Bazzill Basics; Patterned paper: My Mind’s Eye, October Afternoon; Brads: The Paper Studio; Flowers: Bazzill Basics, Prima, The Paper Studio; Floss: DMC; Chipboard: American Crafts; Button: Autumn Leaves; Journaling spots: American Crafts, Jenni Bowlin Studio; Stickers: Making Memories, Pink Paislee

TIP: Although it’s a nice, even number, don’t feel limited by “ten” – its fine to go over or under.

Connecting the word clouds to a central photo with lines of stitched floss is a perfect way to tie this list together. Trying to figure out your own top ten favourites? If thinking about a thing makes you smile, it’s on the list.

10 THINGS by Caroline IkejiCardstock: Bazzill Basics, Die Cuts with a View; Brads: Doodlebug Design; Chipboard numbers, pen: American Crafts; Buttons: Little Yellow Bicycle, Making Memories; Jewels: Little Yellow Bicycle, Prima; Stickers: American Crafts, Colorbök, Little Yellow Bicycle, Prima; Glitter spray: Glimmer Mist by Tattered Angels

TIP: Brightly coloured cardstock circles create a happy rainbow between Caroline’s photos and her journaling. Add little tone-on-tone embellishments to the punched circles for another layer of visual interest.

On this bright layout, Caroline shares ten simple things she loves, from lemon cookies to spring dresses. Grab a pen and jot down your favourite things for a fabulous “here and now” page.

21

TOP 10 by Daniela DobsonPatterned paper: American Crafts, My Mind’s Eye, October Afternoon; Chipboard butterfly: Scenic Route Paper Co.; Journaling spots: Little Yellow Bicycle; Letter stickers: American Crafts; Stamps: Sassafras; Ink: Ranger; Paint: Making Memories, Plaid, Shimmerz; Pen: Marvy Uchida; Border punch: Fiskars

TIP: Rub ons, stickers, or stamps with numbers on them make great embellishments for top ten pages.

Songs bring back memories in a way nothing else can. List your favourite songs – the ones you crank up when they come on the radio, the ones you’re willing to dish out £1.29 for on iTunes – and make a few notes, the way Daniela did, about the way these songs make you feel right now.

bIRTHDAY226 by Carina LindholmCardstock: Bazzill Basics; Patterned paper: American Crafts, October Afternoon; Ribbon; Craft supply; Flowers: Magdas Scrapbooking; Floss: DMC; Buttons: Craft supply; Pearls: Melissa Frances; Stickers: October Afternoon (labels), Scenic Route Paper Co. (number); Stamps: October Afternoon; Ink: Clearsnap, StazOn

To give definition to a layout that has extra white space, stitch around the border or ink the edges of your background paper.

What talents and hobbies (or even careers) are resting in your past, just waiting to be remembered and documented? Maybe you used to tolepaint or make dolls, or teach English or preschool; maybe you’re an entrepreneur who started a business, or maybe you’ve always had a flair for decorating or throwing parties. In this amazing album, which is an altered mini calendar, Kellee revisits her days of sewing baby dresses.

I CAN CUT & SEW by Kellee ConradAlbum is 6 ¼ x 6 ½” Album: Expired mini calendar; Cardstock: Bazzill Basics; Patterned paper: Cosmo Cricket, Making Memories, Sassafras, Studio Calico; Ribbon: Making Memories; Letter stickers, fabric chipboard stickers (sewing notions): American Crafts; Decorative tape, letter stamps, kit (March 2009 Garment District): Studio Calico; Ink: Autumn Leaves; Pen: Zig; Border punches: Fiskars

What inspired you to make this album? The case of “I Can Cut & Sew” is one story I didn’t know I was going to tell until I saw the dress patterned paper from Studio Calico. Right then, I knew I wanted to document all the pretty little things I had made in years past.

How did you create your album? These photos were taken back in the day, so the quality was mediocre at best. I found myself cutting out the dress from each photo and placing it on the base of each album page, almost as an embellishment. I decided to keep the overall design simple by only selecting a few items to work with and then building from there with paper cutting, stamping, and punching. To unify the album, I repeated the same techniques on each page. It took me just over a (rather interrupted) week to complete.

Why did you make this album?I used to sew dresses for friends’ babies when they were born, but it was only something I could give out of love, not something I could make to sell. I don’t sew clothes anymore, and all I have are photos of the experience, so it’s nice to have a memento of a hobby that was important to me at one time in my life.

What does this album mean to you? At this point, my passion for paper and paint has won over my drive to sew, but looking back at these photos I’m reminded of a fun, experimental time in children’s fashion that I loved being a part of. I will never forget the joy I shared in creating these little sewn treasures. Gifts from the heart are worth more than anything you can buy at the store, and preserving that idea and those memories for inspiration and motivation later is worth more than any self-help book!

Whatever your past hobbies, talents, or jobs – if they’re part of the story that makes you, you, scrounge up some old photos or memorabilia (take some new pics if you need to), and put together an amazing album to help you - and others - remember.

[Award Winning STYLE ]

I am a regular at Starbucks. I usually drive thru at least six days a week for my usual – a Grande two pump white chocolate mocha.

I am a night owl. Most nights I don’t get to bed until sometime between midnight and 1 AM.

I am a messy scrapper. I try to clean up between projects, but there are always some things that just never get put away.

I learned to sew just a few years ago because of scrapbooking. The funny thing is my mother was a professional seamstress; I just had no interest in learning when I was younger.

I would be lost without my DVR.

“I am so lucky to have a hobby that I love and to have little girls to use as the subjects of my layouts. (Well… they are not quite so little anymore.) I am such a sucker for fun, bright colours, flowers, buttons, and ribbon, and I get to create with them to my heart’s content. This layout features my youngest daughter, Harper, who is one of the sweetest kids you will ever meet. She has such a colourful and lively personality, and the products that I chose really reflect that.” -Roree

GAbE WILL ALWAYS bE THE bAbY by Penny SmithPatterned paper, chipboard (bicycle, bracket, circles, pin, shoes): Cosmo Cricket; Floss: Studio Calico; Stickers: American Crafts, Jenni Bowlin Studio; Punch: Crop-A-Dile by We R Memory Keepers; Flashcard: Vintage

Chipboard doesn’t have to be raw in order to be altered – Penny punched some holes in the chipboard shoes to make room for some fancy floss.

once upon a time there was a little girl that re-ally wanted to be a princess. She dreamed about being

a princess every night and thought about being a princess all day. One day, the little girls who wanted nothing more than

to be a princess, met a magic bunny. This magic bunny told her that she could have anything she wanted, as long as she would go get the bunny some spinach out of the garden. The little girl, overjoyed at the prospect of finally fulfilling her hopes and dreams and becoming a

princess, raced to the garden as fast as she could. When she got there, instead of a beautiful green garden that had been there that

morning, there was only blakc, charred earth, devoid of life, and most importantly, any spinach.

Stories to TellBy jENNiFEr GALLACHEr

KERMIT THE FROG lamented, “It’s not easy being green.” With all due respect to everyone’s favourite amphibian, it’s really not that hard to be green these days, even in the world of scrapbooking. In fact, I’ve found it to be a challenge that stretches my creativity while offering the reward of peace of mind.

Reducing, reusing, and recycling isn’t a new concept – in my grandmother’s day, the saying went “Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without.” We may be motivated more by a sense of responsibility today than the necessity she felt during those difficult economic times – but the idea is the same. Use less, stretch what you have, and be creative about ways to reduce your impact on the environment.

“...Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without.

One way we as scrapbookers can go green is to look for and support companies who are manufacturing green products, such as papers printed on recycled paper. We can also do things like incorporate the packaging from embellishments, or find ways to use vintage book pages, clothing tags, or chipboard from cereal boxes. I keep scrap files in my cabinet, one for each colour, then “shop my scraps” first when I need to add paper to a project. If you look for ways to be creative, thrifty, and yes, green, you will find them.

On your journey to help the environment, document your efforts. In our house it’s my youngest son who reminds us to recycle. The efforts we make now will be interesting to look back on as we note what our generation did to make the world a better place. Take pictures. Tell that story.

Cosmo Cricket has joined the green revolution by printing patterned paper on recycled materials for their “Earth Love” collection. Nichol used this paper here, and also ran clothing tags through her die cut machine to create those beautiful butterflies. What a great way to stretch the pennies!

“the little things” sentiment: Ali Edwards (Everyday collection), designerdigitals.com; Font: Helvetica Neue Ultra Light

For this hybrid layout, Wendy looked around her house for items she could reuse. The cork is from an old bulletin board, the “patterned paper” is from a magazine, and the butterfly is punched from a magazine cover. In addition, she incorporated a tag from a tea bag and brown string from a spice container. brilliant ideas, and beautifully executed.

A digital layout uses one sheet of paper and printer ink, so you have minimal waste. And, of course, you can choose to keep your layouts on your computer and share them digitally; making no impact at all other than the power it takes to run your computer.

In my neighborhood, it’s my friend Mindy who’s leading the charge to go green. She’s a great example of making changes in her life to make the world a better place, such as taking reusable bags to the grocery store. I take cues from her as I make my own efforts to live a more eco-friendly life. Who inspires you to live greener?
