How well do you know the neighborhoods you work, live or play in? Have you wondered about the inner workings of the place you call home? Have you considered how you can further give back to the com- munity that gives to you? These were questions I asked myself. As one of those fortunate Scottsdale citizens who does work, live and play here, I was anxious to have a better understanding of what was outside my day-to-day box. And then I was introduced to Scottsdale Leadership, a 25-year-old civic organiza- tion designed to help people deepen their connection and take a more active role in Scottsdale. With a distinguished roster of more than 900 alumni leaders, the orga- nization has been ranked as one of the top-five leadership programs in the coun- try. In fact, three of Scottsdale’s current six City Council members are Scottsdale Leadership graduates. One of the ways Scottsdale Leadership has earned this rep- utation is by upholding its five core values: engagement, inclusion, connection, cour- age and stewardship. Engagement You’re sure to find your passion in one of the 17 class days that cover the “A-Z” of Scottsdale, including art, education, gov- ernment, social services, public safety and economic development. As a bonus, a Pay It Forward project allows classmates to get hands-on community leadership experi- ence that leaves a tangible and long-lasting impact on the city. Inclusion As part of these classes, you will hear from the “who’s who” in community lead- ership via presentations, debates and inter- active workshops. These conversations will enhance your understanding of both sides of an issue by listening to knowledgeable leaders. Connection In a class of approximately 40 people, there is an opportunity to create new part- nerships and enrich friendships among a talented and diverse group of leaders. This Bob “Go Daddy” Parsons party was b-b-b-b-bad to the bone as thousands turned out at the “1st Annual Bob’s Biker Blast” on Oct. 20 to see classic rock mega legends .38 Special and George Thorogood at Harley-Davidson of

Scottsdale and GO AZ Motorcycles. Parsons, who acquired both dealerships, has grown the business and is now giving back to the motorcycle community. The all-day event featured the grand opening of the demo and training track, and public demonstrations of the first-ever commercial application of a motorcycle simulator developed for the U.S. military. Non-motorcycle riders paid a $20 donation to Phoenix Children’s Hospital tosee the event, which is expected to return next year.

Recently McCormick Ranch Property Owners’ Association celebrated its 40th anniversary as the first master-planned community in Scottsdale. The Open House commemorated the Ranch’s history and provided an inside look into how exactly the community began. Residents stopped by to see the historical time line, hear Mayor Lane give a proclamation and share in all the memories as well as a slice of cake.

Airpark-based CCS Presentation Systems was recently ranked for the fifth consecutive year by Inc. magazine as one of the nation’s fastest-growing private companies. CCS’ reported a three-year growth rate of 11 percent. Companies comprising this year’s Inc. 500 had aggregate revenue of $15.7 billion and employ more than 48,000 people. Well-known names such as Microsoft, Zappos, Intuit and Clif Bar are members of the Inc. 500|5000. “Clients continue to increase their use of audio and visual equipment, and we are privileged that they are choosing CCS to integrate these technologies into their organizations,” said John Godbout, CEO of CCS.

The Greater Phoenix Economic Council honored GPEC Board Director Andy Warren, president of Maracay Homes, for his contributions to regional development. Warren received the Distinguished Service Award for his leadership in spearheading GPEC’s resource development efforts, including a new focus on multi-year commitments. He was successful in securing 50 percent of private investments for the next three to five years, helping to ensure a continued sustainability with GPEC’s key strategic initiatives in the international, science, technology and innovation sectors. Maracay Homes is headquartered in the Scottsdale Promenade.

Richard M. Poage and Tiffany Richards founded Peaceful Warrior Martial Arts & Healing Center in July 2010 with a mission to create a community where health, wellness and martial arts training are used to better the lives of its members. In October, they opened a new 5,000-square-foot location at 7830 E. Redfield Road, just four miles from the original dojo on Shea Boulevard. Three training floors, fitness classes, a full gym, massage, acupuncture, dojo store, library, coffee/tea bar, lounge, Wi-Fi, an after-school program room, personal training and adult center are featured.

See what it feels like to be fully in firefighting gear as you lead your fellow classmates through a dark and dreary “smoke house.”

t

Courage This experience encourages you to step outside the comfort zone to challenge yourself, intellectually, socially and physi-cally. For example, gain an even higher level of respect for our men and women in uniform by attending Public Safety Day, which includes Scottsdale Police & Fire Departments’ simulation training in which participants don head-to-toe firefighter gear.

Stewardship At the conclusion of Scottsdale Leadership, you will have learned what you need to know to become future busi-ness and civic leaders of tomorrow. How will you choose to make a difference? When I graduated from Scottsdale Leadership Class 26, I had a deeper knowl-edge about my community, a better under-standing of the issues we face, a stronger respect for our leaders, and a supportive group of colleagues, friends and decision makers. Scottsdale Leadership is a major commit-ment. It requires your attention, enthusiasm and active participation. But it’s also a one-of-a-kind opportunity that ultimately leads to finding more fulfillment as you work, live and play. Is it time you explore Scottsdale Leadership? The organization is currently recruiting for its next class. Potential appli-cants can attend an informational reception on Wednesday, March 20, at 5:30 p.m. at The Phoenician resort. For more information, visit www.ScottsdaleLeadership.org or call 480-627-6710.
