This should not be viewed as definitive. Any contribution to expanding on, or correcting, the information here listed will be welcomed. Given the time and logistical constraints, the author suspects that he has explored relatively few sources, and thus cannot certify to the accuracy of certain segments of this document. Those documents known to exist in South Africa have been examined fully. There are numerous photographs in the possession of the author, many of which are framed and therefore could not be included in the site. The contributions of numerous family members including David Pelteret, Ethel Toone, Billie Hines, Joyce Sendall, Joan Haworth, Rosemary Jones, Clive Scotton, Judy Taylor and Tim Shaw are acknowledged with gratitude.

The baronetcy appears to be DE VERDON, details of which are scanty (2005). Family lore has it that offspring of Matilda became the Dame of Sark. Extensive research on my part has failed to support this claim; and the Collings family, I think correctly, repudiates any link. The House of Collings has ruled Sark since 1852: 1852 Dame Marie Collings 1853 - 1882 Rev William Thomas, son 1882 - 1927 William Frederick, son 1927 - 1974 Sybil Mary, daughter, better known as Sybil Hathaway, after her second husband's name, and the Dame of Sark. 1.4 THOMAS SCOTTON bc. 1844

Griffith Williams, farm labourer and Ellen Williams née WILLIAMS) Hannah Ellen Williams was the sister of Annie Williams; and a botany mistress at Netherfield, Battle, Sussex, who gave up her job on the death of her sister so as to look after the offspring. It is speculated that she took up residence in Claybrook on 29th August 1889. On the death of William Scotton (Snr) it is said that the estate was left to his sons who “went farming” in South Africa, lost their inheritance and left their step-mother destitute. She returned to teaching, her daughters “went into service” except for Olive who was given a sound education.

The SCOTTONS of Bitteswell, Claybrook and Lutterworth in context

The following details has been pieced together from various sources, the most informative being

the database of the Church of the Latter-day Saints, and information derived from personal visits over a number of years to Bitteswell Parish Church, Claybrook Magna and Lutterworth by Dr. D A E

Pelteret, Professor Time Shaw and the author.

The cards were in the possession of my grandfather, WILLIAM SCOTTON (1875 – 1960).

From a letter found on the world-wide web, the Scotton family were reputed to be religious dissenters and involved with the Wesleyan movement from its inception.

(second) Abt 1772 Rebecca (Rebeckah) (Unknown). Postulated: Thomas marries again. None of the ages of the children overlap. Since it is believed that Thomas is the brother Thomas mentioned in the 1776 will, if he was remarried to Rebecca then Nathaniel seems to have been born in time for the will to have been changed to include him. On the other hand these things are transcribed from hand written documents, and if the 2 of his 1772 birth is in fact, say, a 5 then it is possible he was not born in time even for the will, which was written in 1770, to have been updated. 2.2.4 Nathaniel Scotton ~ 11 October, 1772 Claybrook, Leicestershire m. 6 October, 1795 Claybrook, Leicestershire Sarah BLOCKLEY bc. 1773 Claybrook, Leicestershire (do.
