The Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library is a different kind of history museum. We focus on the diversity

of American life across four centuries—how we as a people worked and played, struggled and achieved. We pay special attention to the history of American Freemasonry and frater-nalism. The Museum opened in 1975 as the Museum of Our National Heritage, founded and supported by the Scottish Rite Masons in the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction. The Museum has since worked to inspire gener-ations through exhibitions and programs that tell the story of our nation, and celebrate the history of Freemasonry. Officially known as the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library, we aim to serve as the historical society of American Freemasonry. We are the only Museum in the country collecting, preserving, and inter-preting the legacy of fraternal groups in the United States. Our collection now numbers more then 17,000 objects. The Van Gorden-Williams Library & Archives research collections comprise 60,000 books, 1,600 serial titles, and 2,000 cubic feet of archival materials.

Our History

The Museum is a welcoming destina-tion for families and individuals of all ages. We present changing exhibitions,

care for one of the finest Masonic collections in the United States, and provide popular events and programs. Whenever you visit, you can be sure to come away with a fresh insight into our nation’s history. The objects on display in our galleries expand the meaning of American treasures—furniture, lustrous silver, antique quilts, Masonic jewels, clocks, and even Victorian valentines are just some of what you might see. Each object puts you in touch with the past and with the personal histories of the American people—great and ordinary. The Van Gorden-Williams Library & Archives is open to the public. We invite you to peruse our extensive holdings in American history and decorative arts, the Revolutionary

War in Lexington, and American Masonic and fraternal history. Appointments are not necessary, although researchers with in-depth research needs, or those wishing to consult items from the Archives are encouraged to contact us in advance.
