VIRGINIA WELCOMES PITT TO SCOTT STADIUM • Virginia returns to action on Saturday when the Cavaliers welcome the Pitt Panthers to Scott Stadium for Home- comings. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m. and the game will be televised on the ACC Network. IT IS HOMECOMINGS IN CHARLOTTESVILLE • Saturday is Homecomings at UVA and the Cavaliers own a 46-43-2 (.516) all-time Homecomings record. • UVA’s last win on Homecomings was last year when the Cavaliers defeated Syracuse, 44-38, in three overtimes. VIRGINIA COMING OFF A BYE WEEK • Virginia is 27-30 all-time when playing a game after a bye week. • Virginia has won six of its last nine games coming out of a bye week. • Bronco Mendenhall was 11-4 coming off a bye week during his 11-year stint at BYU. FIVE TOP STORYLINES • Saturday is the 85th anniversary of the first game played at Scott Stadium on Oct. 15, 1931. UVA welcomed the VMI Keydets in the inaugural game, losing 18-3. Virginia is 6-3 all-time at Scott Stadium when playing on its anniversary date, including winning five in a row (1966, 1983, 1994, 2005, 2011). Current UVA statistician Dr. John Risher, age 106, stood on the sidelines as a member of the Cavalier football team during that inaugural game. • The series between UVA and Pitt began in 1953, but until the Panthers joined the ACC in 2013, these two teams only met twice in the regular season between 1956 and 2012. • Last time out, on Oct. 1, UVA intercepted five passes at Duke. That tied a team record and was the 10th time the mark had been set by a UVA team. Bryce Hall and Juan Thornhill led the way with two picks, while Quin Blanding had one interception. • With an 84-yard pass at Duke and an 82-yard pass against Central Michigan, UVA quarterback Kurt Benkert became the first Cavalier to have passes of 80+ yards in back-to-back games. Benkert is the only QB in the nation with two passes of 82 or more yards this season. Bronco Mendenhall is only the second UVA head coach to win his ACC debut. Al Groh was the first in 2001 vs. then-No. 19 Clemson. While Mendenhall beat Duke, George Welsh (1982), Dick Bestwick (1976), Sonny Randle (1974), Don Lawrence (1971), George Blackburn (1965), Bill Elias (1961) and Ben Martin (1956) all lost their ACC debuts for UVA against Duke. 6 GAME PITT October 15, 2016 12:30 p.m. • ACC Network Charlottesville, Va. WHAT’S INSIDE
UNIQUELY UVA The University of Virginia is an institution rich with history and tradition. Here is some of the terminology that contributes to UVA’s culture.
Grounds: The term used by students, faculty and alumni to refer to the University dating as far back as Thomas Jefferson. “Campus” is never used.
First Year, Second Year, Third Year, Fourth Year: Instead of freshman, sophomore, junior, senior. Why you may ask? To be a “senior” implies that a person has reached the final phase of learning, a feat that Thomas Jefferson believed to be impossible, arguing instead that education is a life-long process.
Commonwealth: Virginia is one of four constituent states of the United States of America that officially uses the name “Commonwealth” instead of the word state in all references. The other three common- wealths are Kentucky, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania.
UNIVERSITY NICKNAMES Virginia’s athletics teams have been accompanied by a somewhat confusing array of nicknames. The most prominent and widely accepted of these monikers are “Cavaliers,” “Wahoos” and “Hoos.”
Although the terms “Cavaliers,” “Wahoos” and “Hoos” are used almost interchangeably to refer to University teams and players, “Cavaliers” is more often used by the media, while “Wahoos” and “Hoos” are frequently used by Virginia students and fans.
Legend has it that Washington & Lee baseball fans dubbed the Virginia players “Wahoos” during the fiercely contested rivalry that existed between the two in-state schools in the 1890s. By 1940, “Wahoos” was in general use around Grounds to denote University students or events relating to them. The abbreviated “Hoos” sprang up later in student newspapers and has gained growing popularity in recent years.
THE CAVALIER MASCOT The costumed Cavalier with a large character head debuted during Virginia’s 1984 football season and has remained the official mascot of the University.
The first documented Cavalier on horseback was Francis Bell, a Virginia student from Dublin, Va., in 1947. Bell rode onto the field dressed as Cavaliers for Virginia’s home football game with Harvard on the afternoon of October 11.
The Cavalier on horseback returned as the University’s mascot in 1963. The UVA Polo Club provided both the horse and rider. However, the mounted Cavalier and his horse parted company in 1974 with the inception of AstroTurf at Scott Stadium.
The mounted Cavalier made its return in the Florida Citrus Bowl at the end of the 1989 football season. Due to its instant popularity, the Cavalier on horseback returned the following season on a regular basis and continues to lead the Virginia football team onto the field at the beginning of all home games.
UNIVERSITY COLORS Orange and blue were adopted as the University of Virginia’s official athletic colors at a mass student meeting in 1888. UVA athletic teams had previously worn silver gray and cardinal red, but those colors did not stand out on muddy football fields, prompting a student movement to change them.
One of the students attending the mass meeting was Allen Potts, a star athlete who played on Virginia’s first football team in 1888. Potts showed up at the meeting wearing a navy blue-and-orange scarf that he had acquired during a summer boating expedition at Oxford University. Orange and blue were cho- sen as the official athletic colors after one of Potts’ fellow students pulled the scarf off Potts’ neck and, waving it to the crowd, yelled, “How will this do?” UVA later served as the inspiration for schools like Auburn and Florida when they selected school colors. WAH-HOO-WAH The origin of “Wah-hoo-wah” is uncertain. The cheer was used to root on Virginia teams as early as 1890 and may have been borrowed from Dartmouth College, whose athletics teams were once known as the Indians.
Legend attributes the yell to Natalie Floyd Otey, who sang the ballad “Where’er You Are, There Shall My Love Be” at Charlottesville’s Levy Opera House in 1893. The predominantly student audience noticed that Otey warbled the first three words of the song between each of the stanzas and decided to join in the refrain. By evening’s end, goes the legend, the crowd had corrupted “Where’er You Are” into “Wah- hoo-wah.”
The Levy Opera House stands at the corner of High Street and Park Street and has since been renovated into an office building.

UVA VS. PITT • SERIES HISTORY
THE SERIES VS. THE PANTHERS • Pittsburgh leads the all-time series by a 5-3 margin. • Between 1956 and 2012 UVA and Pitt only met twice in the regular season and once in a bowl game. Once Pitt joined the ACC in 2013, the two programs have met every season as members of the ACC Coastal Division. • Until UVA’s 44-14 win in the 2007 Scott Stadium meeting, Pittsburgh had won all three regu- lar-season meetings. The Panthers won 26-0 in Charlottesville in 1953, 18-7 in Pittsburgh in 1955 and 38-13 in Pittsburgh in 2006. • Virginia’s 23-16 win over Pittsburgh in the 2003 Continental Tire Bowl in Charlotte, N.C., has been one of the most closely contested game of the series. • UVA’s Tony Franklin played a big role on defense in the bowl game to end Larry Fitzgerald’s 18- game streak with a touchdown reception. • The teams seesawed back and forth in the first half with Virginia holding a 17-13 lead at halftime. The second half featured only field goals in UVA’s seven-point win. Matt Schaub closed his stellar career by capturing MVP honors after passing for 244 yards. Former Pittsburgh Steeler tight end Heath Miller had a big day for UVA with four receptions for 84 yards, including a 52-yard touch- down reception from Schaub late in the first quarter for the game’s first score.
MORE ON THE PITT SERIES DURIG THE LEAN 1950’S
• The 26-0 loss in 1953 remains one of the worst offensive performances in the modern era of UVA football. The Cavaliers recorded three first downs, an all-time low, and had just 43 yards of total offense, their second-lowest modern-day total. • Pittsburgh scored on its first possession 5:52 into the contest and scored in every quarter to win. • In 1955, UVA ended more than 80 scoreless minutes against Pitt when halfback Ralph Kneeland scored UVA’s first touchdown in the series on an eight-yard run at the 9:39 mark of the second quarter. That score gave UVA a brief 7-6 lead, but Pitt halfback Lou Cimarolli scored the game-win- ner on a 32-yard dash midway through the third quarter.

Pitt 26, Virginia 19 Oct. 10, 2015 • Pittsburgh, Pa.
Last Meeting Nate Peterman threw for 222 yards and two scores, Qadree Ollison added one on the ground and Pittsburgh held off Virginia 26-19 the last time these two teams met. Virginia had the ball with a chance to tie it in the final seconds but Matt Johns’ fourth-down pass to T.J. Thorpe sailed wide. Johns completed 17 of 33 for 209 yards and a touchdown with an intercep- tion. The Panthers came out sharp, racing to a quick 17-3 lead. Peterman hit tight end Scott Orndoff for a 37-yard touchdown pass on game’s fifth play, Chris James ripped off a 48-yard sprint to set up a 4-yard scoring run by Ollison later in the first quarter and the Panthers appeared to be in firm control. Several times the Cavaliers had receivers running open deep in the second- ary in the first half only to narrowly miss a momentum-turning play. The defense produced a touchdown when Mike Moore hit Peterman. The ball popped up in the air and defensive end Kwontie Moore snagged it, taking the first turnover produced by Virginia all season and chugging 15 yards to the end zone to bring the Cavaliers within 17-10. Pitt extended its lead back to 13 when Matt Galambos returned an intercep- tion 51 yards to set up Tyler Boyd’s pretty 8-yard touchdown reception. When Johns was tackled in the end zone for a safety, the Panthers were up 26-13. The Cavaliers made it 26-19 when Johns found Canaan Severin for a 32-yard score with 5:50 to play. Given one last shot, Virginia converted a fourth-and-25 and moved to the Pitt 42 with a minute to go. Four straight incompletions, however, ended any hopes of Virginia getting the win.

UVA WINS ACC OPENER FOR THE SECOND TIME IN THREE YEARS
• UVA’s 34-20 win at Duke gave the Cavaliers a win in an ACC opener for the second time in three seasons after beating then-No. 21 Louisville at Scott Stadium in 2014 (23-21). • It was UVA’s first win in an ACC opener on the road since defeating North Carolina in Chapel Hill, 16-3, in 2009.
• Bronco Mendenhall is only the second UVA head coach to win his ACC debut. Al Groh was the first in 2001 vs. then-No. 19 Clemson. While Mendenhall beat Duke, George Welsh (1982), Dick Bestwick (1976), Sonny Randle (1974), Don Lawrence (1971), George Blackburn (1965), Bill Elias (1961) and Ben Martin (1956) all lost their ACC debuts at UVA against Duke.
REID IS UVA’S OTHER 1,000-YARD RUSHER
• With 1,395 rushing yards, UVA’s Taquan Mizzell is No. 29 all-time at UVA in career rushing, but he isn’t the only Cavalier with at least 1,000 career rushing yards at the college level. • TB Albert Reid reached 1,000 career yards at the college level in Week 3 at UConn. • Reid currently has 1,125 rushing yards at the college level with 10 career scores. • He rushed 122 times for 447 yards and three scores at Maryland from 2012-14. • Reid has rushed 125 times for 678 yards and seven touchdowns in 16 career games at UVA.
RED-ZONE OFFENSE • Since Taquan Mizzell fumbled on the five-yard line against Richmond in the season-opening game, UVA scored on eight straight trips inside the red-zone, including seven touchdowns and one field goal. • The streak was snapped on UVA’s very last play of the UConn game. Alex Furbank’s 20-yard field goal attempt as time expired at UConn on Sept. 17 halted UVA’s streak at eight. The streak included four trips inside the red-zone at then-No. 24 Oregon, resulting in four touchdowns. • UVA has scored on 16 of its last 17 trips inside the redzone, with 15 touchdowns and one field goal. • UVA ranks tied for fourth in the nation in red zone chances that ended with a touchdown (83.3 percent). • In 2015 UVA ranked 109 nationally in red zone chances that ended with a touchdown (51.5 percent).
BENKERT BREAKS UVA PASSING RECORD FOR A GAME • Virginia quarterback Kurt Benkert broke Marc Verica’s record for passing yards in a game. Benkert threw for 421 passing yards on Sept. 24 against Central Michigan, snapping Verica’s 2010 record of 417 passing yards in a game that came at Duke. • Benkert threw five touchdowns, making him the fith Cavalier to throw five touchdowns in a game and the first since Matt Schaub in 2002 against Akron. The five touchowns is tied for second-most by a UVA quarterback in a game.
UVA’S OFFENSIVE TOUCHDOWN DRIVES ARE SCORING QUICKLY • Of UVA’s 17 touchdown drives in 2016, 15 of them have been completed in 3:50 or less. • All seven of UVA’s touchdown drives against Central Michigan were completed in 3:50 or less. • Two of UVA’s touchdown drives against Central Michigan were under 37 seconds, while five were under 2:15. • UVA’s 99-yard touchdown drive against Central Michigan was a program record. The previous record was 98 yards, done various times. UVA’s longest touchdown drive against Central Michigan was completed in 11 plays and 3:50, the longest touchdown drive play and time wise in the game for UVA.

VIRGINIA’S 1,000 CAREER RECEIVING LIST
TB Taquan Mizzell is one of five Cavaliers to record 1,000 career rushing and 1,000 career receiving yards.
OLAMIDE ZACCHEAUS A FAVORITE TARGET OF BENKERT • Olamide Zaccheaus leads UVA with 26 catches, 340 receiving yards and four touchdowns. He shares the team lead with Keeon Johnson with 26 receptions. • Zaccheaus had a career day against Central Michigan where he made eight catches for 141 yards and two touchdowns. • His 82-yard touchdown reception from Kurt Benkert is the 21st longest reception in the nation this season and the 13th longest touchdown reception in UVA program history. • Zaccheaus came to UVA as a running back, but switched to wide receiver as a true freshman to fill a need in 2015. • The versatile Zaccheaus also ran back kicks in 2015 and is on the preseason watch list for the Paul Hor- nung Award, the national honor given to the most versatile player. • Olamide is Nigerian for “the blessing has come.”
BLANDING AND KISER PICKING UP IN 2016 WHERE THEY LEFT OFF IN 2015
• Micah Kiser (11.6) is leading the ACC in tackles per game and is No. 3 in the nation. Quin Blanding (9.2) is No. 6 in the ACC in tackles per game. • At Oregon and UConn Blanding and Kiser were identical in tackle production. The duo has led the team at then-No. 24 Oregon and at UConn in tackles. At Oregon both finished with nine stops, with an identical five solo stops and four assisted tackles. At UConn it was the same thing, both had 11 tackles with an identical eight solo stops and three assisted tackles. • The difference was the opening game against Richmond when Kiser led all players with 14 tackles. Blan- ding led all players against Central Michigan with 12 tackles. Kiser made 18 tackles against Duke. • Not much is different from 2015 as Kiser finished the season No. 1 in the ACC in tackles with 9.8 tackles per game. Blanding has finished 2014 and 2015 No. 2 in the ACC in tackles.
BLANDING DOUBLES UP THE TACKLES
• UVA’s Quin Blanding owns 14 double-digit tackle games over 29 collegiate games. • Blanding owns two double-digit tackle games in 2016 (UConn, Central Michigan) • Blanding had six double-digit tackles games in 2015 and six as a freshman in 2014. • Blanding has 284 career tackles, 9.79 per game.
KISER DOUBLES UP THE TACKLES • Micah Kiser owns 10 double-digit tackle games over his 17 career starts. • Kiser has recorded 175 tackles over his 17 career starts, which is every game since the start of the 2015 season. • Kiser played in all 12 games a redshirt freshman, mostly on special teams when he shared the UVA team lead with nine special teams tackles.
JOHNSON EMERGES AS BIG TARGET FOR BENKERT • Senior WR Keeon Johnson has 26 receptions for 264 yards and three touchdowns. • His 26 receptions are already equals his 2014 and 2015 output combined. Johnson only recorded 13 receptions each of those seasons after grabbing 20 catches as a freshman in eight games. • Johnson’s two touchdown catches through the first two games of 2016 equaled his career total entering 2016. He now has five career touchdowns. • Johnson’s 264 receiving yards are more than the 138 receiving yards the senior had in 2014 and his 2015 total of 173 yards. • Eight of his receptions have given UVA a first down on third or fourth down, including a crucial 4th and 10 at UConn that went for 34 yards.
RUSHING ATTACK IS PICKING UP • After the running backs rushed for only 35 yards as a team against Richmond in the season opener, UVA received a big performance from its ground game at then-No. 24 Oregon on Sept. 10. • Albert Reid’s 126-yard rushing game led UVA’s 220 combined rushing yards from its three backs against Oregon. Taquan Mizzell added 48 rushing yards and Jordan Ellis added 46 in the loss at Oregon. • At Oregon UVA’s running backs gained 220 yards on 31 carries for an average of 7.1 yards per rush, while also scoring two touchdowns. • Starting with the Oregon game, UVA’s running backs have rushed for 599 yards and six touchdowns for an average 149.8 rushing yards per game.
EIGHT TRUE FRESHMEN HAVE PLAYED SO FAR IN 2016 • True freshmen Hasise Dubois (WR), Bryce Hall (CB), Jordan Mack (OLB), Juwan Moye (DE) and Joe Reed (WR) made their college debut against Richmond on Sept. 3. • True freshmen Chris Moore (S) Landan Word (OLB) made their collegiate debut at Oregon on Sept. 10. • True freshman Matt Terrell (OLB) made his collegiate debut against Central Michigan on Sept. 24. • All together, 22 Cavaliers have made their collegiate debuts so far in 2016. • In all, 13 freshmen, including true and redshirt, made their debut against Richmond: Warrent Craft (WR), Tanner Cowley (WR), Hasise Dubois (WR), Bryce Hall (CB), Eli Hanback (DE), Jordan Mack (OLB), Juwan Moye (DE), Gladimir Paul (OLB), Joe Reed (WR), Chris Sharp (S), Jahvoni Simmons (ILB), James Trucilla (DT) and Steve Wright (DE). • Other collegiate debuts against Richmond were made by sophomores Jake Fieler (OG), Ben Hogg (WR) and Cory Jones (OLB). • Redshirt freshman RJ Proctor (C/OG) made his collegiate debut at Oregon on Sept. 10. • Redshirt freshman Kareem Gibson (CB) and sophomore Alex Furbank (PK) made their collegiate debuts at UConn on Sept. 17. • Junior Sam Hayward (PK) made his football collegiate debut at Duke on Oct. 1.

NOTING FIRST CAREER STARTS IN 2016 • Nine Cavaliers have made their first career starts in 2016. • Six Cavaliers made their first career starts against Richmond on Sept. 3. • First time starters on offense vs. Richmond: Kurt Benkert (QB), Warren Craft (WR), Jake Fieler (LG). • First time starters on defense vs. Richmond: Jordan Mack (OLB), Jack Powers (DE) and Myles Robinson (CB). • Two Cavaliers made their first career starts at Oregon on Sept. 10. • Eli Hanback (DE) and Kirk Garner (CB) each made their first career starts on defense. • One Cavalier made his first career start at UConn on Sept. 17. • Hasise Dubois (WR) made his first career start on offense, becoming only the second true freshman to start a game for the Cavaliers in 2016. Jordan Mack (OLB) started the season opener against Richmond and at UConn.
JORDAN MACK STARTS SEASON OPENER AT OUTSIDE LINEBACKER • True freshman Jordan Mack (Lithonia, Ga.) started at one of the outside linebacker positions against Richmond. Mack finished with three tackles. • Mack became the first true freshman to start at linebacker in a season opener since Ahmad Brooks in 2003. Brooks made seven tackles and broke up two passes in his debut against Duke on Aug. 30, 2003.
EARNED NOT GIVEN • UVA head coach Bronco Mendenhall has brought an “Earned Not Given” mentality to the Virginia Foot- ball program. • When winter workouts started, players wore all black and nothing affixed with a Virginia logo. Players had to earn the right to wear the blue and orange. Then had to earn the right to wear the Virginia logo. • Everything from access to the locker room, to numbers was part of the new “Earned Not Given” mental- ity. Even when it came to practice, players had to earn the next period, repeating the previous period as many times as needed until the next period was earned.
TASK UNIT LEADERS • Bronco Mendenhall has entrusted the team with a leadership body with six units. With a military flair, there are six task unit leaders. • The coaching staff selected the six task leaders. Each unit consists of 12-13 players, drafted by the task unit leaders themselves. Each task unit leader from his team names an assistant leader. • A lot of activities over the summer was accomplished through the task units. Accountability and disci- pline were two really big emphasis. • It was the task unit leaders that determined the draft order when it came time to select numbers. • RB Jordan Ellis received the first pick and NT Donte Wilkins received the second pick.
PLAYERS EARN THEIR NUMBERS • On the night of Saturday, Aug. 27, inside the locker room at Scott Stadium, 60 players earned their num- bers in a special ceremony. • Eleven more Cavaliers earned their numbers on the morning of Sept. 1, prior to practice. • On Sept. 15, prior to practice, OLB Matt Terrell (Fr.) earned his number. • On Sept. 22, prior to practice, DT Andre Miles-Redmond (Sr.) and PK Sam Hayward (Jr.) earned their numbers. • On Sept. 29, prior to practice, OLB Reed Kellam and WR Ross Gardner earned their numbers. • On Oct 13, after practice, OLB Sean Fitzgerald earned his jersey to bring the total number of players whom have earned numbers to 77. • Below are the Cavaliers who have number changes in 2016: Player Old Number New Number Connor Brewer, QB 2 16 Evan Butts, TE 45 46 Lester Coleman, P 93 47 Nicholas Conte, P 18 30 Malcolm Cook, OLB 27 17 Warren Craft, WR 1 23 Doni Dowling, WR 19 7 David Eldridge, WR 82 11 Jake Fieler, OG 64 77 Sean Fitzgerald 46 43 Ross Gardner, WR 84 86 Kirk Garner, CB 2 32 Kareem Gibson, CB 7 31 Ben Hogg, WR 83 18 Keeon Johnson, WR 85 8 Cory Jones, OLB 54 27 Reed Kellam, OLB 40 45 Andre Levrone, WR 14 19 Brendan Marshall, TE 49 83 Chris Peace, OLB 31 13 Albert Reid, TB 5 2 Myles Robinson, CB 13 14 Jahvoni Simmons, ILB 22 42 Joe Spaziani, QB 7 99 C.J. The Carl Smith Center, home of David A. Harrison III Field at Scott Stadium, with its unique architectural design, scenic setting on the University’s Grounds and exceptional sight lines, is one of the nation’s finest college football settings.
Opened in 1931, Scott Stadium might be one of the oldest campus college football stadiums in the nation, but you could never tell from its appearance. Numerous upgrades and expansions make it a modern home for the Cavaliers and their fans.
Scott Stadium was the gift of Frederic William Scott and Elisabeth Strother Scott, and was dedicated to the memory of his parents, Frederic Robert Scott and Fran- ces Branch Scott.
Virginia played its dedication game at Scott Stadium on Oct. 15, 1931 against the Virginia Military Institute before a then-capacity crowd of 22,000. Prior to that season, the Cavaliers staged their home games at the University’s Lambeth Field.
Virginia has played 453 games in the historic venue. UVA’s all-time record at Scott Stadium stands at 256-185-12.

NICHOLAS CONTE ONE OF UVA’S BEST PUNTERS • Nicholas Conte owns a 44.5 yards per punt average for his career. He is 21 punts shy of the 100 career punt minimum to rank on the career list at UVA. • Currently Conte’s 44.8 yards per punt average would rank No. 1 in the UVA annals, topping Russ Henderson’s 43.3 yards per punt mark.
SOCCER NATIONAL CHAMPION JOINS TEAM AS A PLACEKICKER • Former UVA men’s soccer player Sam Hayward officially joined the football team as a walk-on placekicker on Sept. 19. • Hayward made his college football debut at Duke on Oct. 1, connecting on all three PATs he attempted. • Hayward was a member of UVA’s men’s soccer program in 2014 and 2015 after spending the 2013 season at Penn. • Hayward was part of UVA’s 2014 NCAA title team. He finished the second penalty kick in the shootout of the NCAA championship match against UCLA. He also convert- ed on one of UVA’s PKs in the quarterfinal win over Georgetown and tied the game late in the first half of the second round NCAA match with UNC Wilmington. • Hayward played football as a kicker and wide receiver in the 8th, 9th and 10th grade.
UVA HAS ATTEMPTED ONLY TWO FIELD GOALS IN 2016
• UVA attempted its first field goal of 2016 in game three at UConn. Alex Furbank connected on a 23-yard field goal in his first career play of football at any level. He later missed from 20 as time expired. Furbank walked-on to the UVA team during fall camp after being on the soccer roster at DIII Randolph-Macon in 2015, but did not appear in any games.

BENKERT IS UVA’S STARTING QUARTERBACK • Kurt Benkert was named the starting quarterback by head coach Bronco Mendenhall on August 24 following the final practice of fall camp. • Benkert, a transfer from East Carolina, became (vs. Richmond) the first Cavalier quarterback to start his UVA debut since 1977 when Bry- an Shumock started the season opener against NC State. Shumock switched to defensive back for the 1978 season and led UVA with four interceptions. • Benkert was the 11th different UVA starting quarterback to start an opener in the last 12 seasons. The list includes: Matt Johns (2015), Greyson Lambert (2014), David Watford (2013), Michael Rocco (2011- 12), Marc Verica (2010), Vic Hall (2009), Peter Lalich (2008), Jameel Sewell (2007), Christian Olsen (2006) and Marques Hagans (2005).
UVA QUARTERBACKS IN THEIR FIRST-CAREER START

He rotates between three colors, black, grey and white.
