Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World Analysis Jay Smith S0045090 Characters

Scott Pilgrim played by Michael Cera is the 23-year-old protagonist. He is the bass player for his band Sex Bob-omb with his friends Stephen Stills and Kim Pine. Though an unemployed slacker. Who wants to live life as a rock star, Scott is dating a high schooler named Knives Chau before meeting Ramona. The two begin dating, but Scott is drawn to Romona. Despite the main premise of the film being Scott's quest to defeat Ramona Flowers' seven evil exes and balancing it with his own day to day life, Scott has evil exes of his own which he is challenged by.

Ramona Flowers played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead is an American girl who lived in New York and now works as a "super ninja delivery girl" for Amazon.ca She is 24 years old and Scotts main love interest. Romona is very mysterious and reveals very little, also is very guarded about her past in New York before she moved to Toronto. She is capable of traveling through subspace and has seven evil exes who challenges Scott for her love. When fighting, she uses an oversized mallet as her weapon, she changes her hairstyle frequently and becomes anxious when Gideon is mentioned or brought up.

Kimberly "Kim" Pine is Scott's ex girlfriend played by Alison Pill and the drummer of Sex Bob-omb, Scott's band. She is 23 years old and was Scott's first girlfriend, whom he saved from Simon Leeback in high school. The two broke up when Scott's family moved away to Toronto. When Kim moved to Toronto herself, they formed Sex Bob-Omb with Scott's former band mate Stephen Stills. She has a sarcastic personality. You might say that she has somewhat of an inferiority complex, as she looks down at her knees allot. Kim met in Northern Ontario, when he transferred to St. Joel's High School and into her geography class. Scott having seen Kim play drum at a performance in the 2

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World Analysis Jay Smith S0045090 school band he wanted her in his band. Unfortunately, the day of the performance, Kim was kidnapped by the boys of Benvie Tech High School (led by Simon Lee), and Scott had to fight through them all After rescuing her, Scott asked her to go out with him and to be the drummer for his band. But the relationship ended when Scott's family moved to Toronto. In the film Kim expresses annoyance at Scott for many faults that he has done and generally tries for forget that she ever dated him in the past. But putting the past to aside she still has some sort of affection for him and put up with his crap.

Natalie Adams is Scott Pilgrim's ex-girlfriend played by Brie Larson who brutally dumped Scott in college. Envy initially a quiet mousey girl, so she decides to change herself her name Envy and her image, becoming more callous and aggressive. Envy is introduced in the film as the lead singer and for the popular band called The Clash at Demonhead. Scott describes her original personality as being "nice person and does not understand what she has since become. Envy is in a relationship with Ramona's ex-boyfriend Todd Ingram and claims to know about Ramona's past and what had happen.

Knives Chau played by Ellen Wong is a 17-year-old Chinese-Canadian high school girl and is obsessed with Scott once the dating him, Scott brokes up with her after he meeting Ramona. Typical school girl, after their break-up, she cuts and dyed her hair and changed her clothing style, hoping to win Scott back by becoming more of a hipster. Her discovery that Scott was cheating on her with Ramona causes tension between herself and Romana. She starts dating sex-bob-omb groupie Young Neil although she is still in love with Scott. Scott and Knives met on a bus when Scott helped her pick up a stack of books she dropped while traveling home with her mother. Despite her being 17 and Scott being 23, the two have no problem with the age difference since nothing seems to happen between them apart from Knives talking about her day and Scott listening. Eventually she's invited to a practice session of Scott's group Sex-bob-omb and after hearing "Launchpad McQuack" is addicted to them, and Scott. Scott becomes more distant from Knives who is oblivious to the situation after Ramona shows up, and continues becoming closer and closer to him, eventually kissing him. Knives becomes more and more enamored and affectionate with Scott until he decides to break up with her. Stalking Scott for several days she learns of Ramona and immediately assumes Scott was cheating on her. She viewed her as the enemy she must defeat to win Scott back.

Stephen Stills is the lead singer, guitarist of Sex Bob-omb played by Mark Webber who is the same age of Scott 22 years old. Stephen knew Scott through there time at the University of Toronto. While he plays a minor role in the film, he spends his time in music gigs worrying about how much his band will be awesome or suck, at one point during the film Scott gets fed up with his moaning he slaps Stephen in the face so he can relax (three times: slaps him once when they are about to perform in the Battle of the Bands, and twice in a row when they are about to do the music battle with the Katayanagi twins. Even though Sex Bob-omb later found out the talent agent "G-Man" Gideon was Ramona's 7th evil ex, but yet he still accepted the contract for the band with Young Neil replacing Scott as basses as Scott doesnt want anything to do with Gideon.

Young" Neil played by Johnny Simmons, is Sex Bob-omb's biggest fan besides Knives Chau. Young Neil is Stephenss roommate and the one who dated Knives Chau after her and Scott broke up. Young Neil is a kind of roadie and fanboy to Sex Bob-omb, going to the band rehearsals and hanging out with the band despite not actually being in it. Neil strives to be just like Scott as he often repeats what Scott says, dressing in the similar ways to Scott. Neil knows exactly how to play the bass guitar just like Scott. When Gideon signs Sex Bob-omb Scott declines and leaves the band so Neil replaced Scott as the basses, then officially becoming Sex Bob-Omb's new bass player. On Scott's second life at the Chaos Theatre he apologises to all the members of the band and Scott tells Young Neil that the band sounds better with him on bass, and that from this day on he will be known as....Neil.

Wallace is Scott Pilgrim's gay roommate played by Kieran Culkin as Scott refers to him as his cool gay roommate Although he and Scott are just friends, they both share a house together which technically Wallace owns, which has only has one storage room, bathroom, and living room which is attracted to the kitchen, they both share a double because they can't afford two beds. Wallace is very easy down to earth kind of guy, very calm; He is also very open about his homosexuality. At one point in the film when Wallace is first introduced he states that Scott is "totally his bitch forever as he owns everything in the house. He has caused some guys to turn gay, like Stacey Pilgrim, Scotts younger sister boyfriend Jimmy. During the first concert in the Battle of the Bands. He also disapproved of Scott cheating on Knives saying that Scott knew what it was like to be cheated on, and he made Scott break-up with her. Wallace has ability to text information at high speed, informing Stacey about Scott's dating problems in an instant, even while barely conscious. At points in the film Wallace also overhears on Scott's phone conversations. Wallace is the type of friend that provides emotional support Scott when things are not looking so good for him also comforting Scott when his problems become too difficult to handle.

Romonas Seven Evil Exes

Matthew Patel played by Satya Bhabha is Ramona's first evil ex, a former boyfriend from the seventh grade, Ramona and he dated for only a week and a half, during which Ramona pretty much used Matthew for his mystical powers to ward off jocks interested in her, his mystical powers include flight and the ability to hurl fire balls and can summon Demon hipster chicks. She dated Matthew because he was the only non-white and non-jock kid at her school. The two only kissed once, and it ended shortly after Matthew's pre-adolesent capriciousness. Afterwards, Matthew turned evil during his high school years and by that time had moved far, far away. Matthew's attire, hair, and reason for retribution against Ramona and Scott stylize him as some sort of goth/hipster hybrid (despite his claims that looking like a pirate). He was used by Ramona back in seventh grade because he was different and had mystical powers the pair used to destroy the jocks interested in her, and then was promptly dumped after a week and a half. Nine years later and Matthew still hasn't gotten over it; now a brooding, angsty, adult able to summon demon-hipster girls, Matthew clearly hasn't grown as an individual at all. 5

Lucas Lee is Ramona's second evil ex played by Chris Evans who is a pro skateboarder who turned into a movie star. Ramona and Lucas Lee started dating during their freshman year in high school together. Around that time Lucas Lee was a "whiny little greasy-haired skater." Prior to the relationship Lucas followed Ramona around and constantly asked to go out with her. Eventually Ramona said okay and the two went out for a short while. At some point in the relationship Ramona cheated on and left him for the "first cocky pretty boy" that came by Ramona's third evil exboyfriend Todd Ingram. Despite the rugged looks, smoking, and being one of Ramona's Evil Exes, Lucas seems to be a decent guy who just never got past the breakup. After punching Scott in the head and tossing him into the upper stories of Casa Loma, He also cries when talking about how Romona cheated on him, but insists he's "super tough and cool.

Todd Ingram is Ramona's third evil ex played by Brandon Routh who is an isarrogant, narcissistic, uncaring, arrogant, vain, and insensitive person and a habitual liar even Scott calls him a Cocky Cock. He is in a relationship with Envy Adams (Scotts ex-girlfriend) who is his child hood love. He is also the bass player for The Clash at Demonhead. He is a Vegan, with vegan based psychic power although he is known to cheat on both his vegan diet as well as his girlfriend, believing he can get away with mostly anything because he's a rock star. At one point during the movie he is caught by the Vegan Police for breaking his diet, and has his powers taken away, giving Scott the edge to defeat him. Unlike the character in the comics, Todd seems loyal to Envy Adams, he is the one who punched Knives Chau so hard, and her highlights were knocked out of her hair.

Roxanne "Roxie" Richter is Ramona's fourth Evil Ex and the only ex-girlfriend played by Mae Whitman. Who is a half-ninja who taught Ramona much of what she knows of her ninja abilities and subspace. She dated Ramona while they both attended The University. The first time she attacked Scott she is very mad because he punched her in the boob. Despite being insane, Roxie has somewhat of an inferiority complex over her appearance, figure and her "half ninja" background. Roxie battles Scott in a night club were Scott is usually against fighting girls, so Ramona fights Roxie; Roxie is much shorter than Ramona. She claims Scott is a "lazy ass" who refuses to fight his own battles. So for part of the time Romona uses Scotts body as a weapon. Scott barely defeats her by poking her "weak spot" on the back of her knee, causing her to explode into coins.

Kyle & Ken Katayanagi are Ramona's fifth and sixth evil exes played by Keita Saitou and Soto Satio are a pair of Japanese twins that Romana dated simultaneously without the other knowing, and when they both discovered the truth, they called the whole thing off, and vowed to work together forever to get back at her. While Ken and Kyle do not have many "special powers", and do not like to get their hands dirty in a close up battle. instead they engage Sex Bob-omb in a mystical amp battle during the final round of the battle of the bands. They initially outclass Sex Bob-Omb by summoning "double dragon" animals from their amps, but are eventually defeated when Scott summons a Yeti by activating his distortion pedal

Gideon Graves Ramona's seventh evil ex and the leader of the evil ex League played by Jason Schwartzman, Gideon is portrayed as a stereotype evil master mind. He's easily angered when his plans don't come to fruition, monologues, and is generally conniving. He is uncaring about the people around him including the other members of the League of Ramona's Evil Exe. Gideon was Romonas boyfriend previous to Scott in New York City, When it comes to relationships Scott and Gideon share a lot of common traits like being a dick, womanizing, being manipulative, and mistreating their significant others However, by the time of their conflict, Scott's come to accept and understand the kind of person he's been while Gideon continues to view himself as flawless which leads to his downfall. He is mentioned several times throughout the movie but never seen fully until the battle of the bands scene, He is the owner of "The Chaos Theatre this himself and Scott has a battle in, were Scott recuses Romona from the mind control that Gideon has over her.

CGI Effects

The special effects in this film are very stylized with comic style and game graphics. Its like you are watching a live action video game. This film is very much inspired by the video game style, from the very start of the film when the Universal logo pops up, you can already tell this film will definitely be associating the 8-bit culture, the logo has been replaced with the style of pixel graphics, the music has been translated into some sort of electronic sounds. The film is very much like a video game style and this is repeated to the 8

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World Analysis Jay Smith S0045090 very core, the real world in the eyes of a video game. As the image making capabilities advanced during the move from the lab to full scale production in the 1970s, Hollywood took notice. There were several movies that included one or more special effects scenes that were CGI. For example, John Whitney Jr. produced some graphics effects for Michael Crichton's Westworld in 1973; Information International Inc (III) produced a 3D representation of Peter Fonda's head for the movie Futureworld in 1976; Susan Dey was digitized by III for several scenes in Looker; Larry Cuba produced a scene for Star Wars, and another scene was done with Scanimate; John Whitney, Sr., R/Greenberg and others produced graphics for titles, including the famousSuperman titles; Disney's The Black Hole used a 3D effect for the opening and for some trailers; the Genesis Effect was produced by Lucasfilm for Star Trek: the Wrath of Khan in 1982. But it was the 1982 sci-fi movie TRON that pushed the issue, using four major production companies to produce over 20 minutes of full 3D graphics. Whereas the movie was not a box-office success, it did prove that this new medium had tremendous potential for the industry

In this scene you have Knife's Chou in the record store with Scott Pilgrim, as you can see from the picture on the left you see that the surrounding of the set is Pink that could associated with something girly. Then you see text graphics (Love) in between the two characters. In my opinion this is very much like a comic and the fact that text enforces the exasperation of what Knifes is emotionally feeling. Then in the picture on the right the camera is on a close up of Knife's this type of shot can show more of the characters face expression and you can clearly see the face expression in kind of blank but then if you associate the background which is black that means sadness so by combining the two together something has happened and knifes in sad.

This shot is one of my particularly favourites shots out of the movie, it is really outstanding with a number of CGI elements they have put into this scene, they have really portrayed the comic art style in this.

9

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World Analysis Jay Smith S0045090

As you can see they only really have two characters on the set which the audience is focused on (Scott and Matthew). One thing I love about the opening of the scene is when you see a close up shot of Michael getting ready to fight, you see the fight text appear behind Michael and with some sort of life bar around him this gives the game style effect

The way that they have produced this scene is having Satya on a blue screen with a rig holding him, blue screen to add the background effects. As staya come down to punch Michael you see that he punches Michaels arm but infarct statya is actually punching a lighting trigger that sets off a flair. They have also added manga style speed line to give the effect that staya is flying pretty fast through the air, and then as you see here they have added comic stylized graphics with the (KROWW) text that gives it more of an impact. Pretty much during the Matthew Patel fight they have used the same techniques thought out.

Here is another great scene between Lucas and Scott. When Scott gets thrown in the air by Lucas Lee but in this scene they have mixed a CGI digital copy of Scott pilgrim falling down. The stages they have done is buy having Lucas throwing Scott in the air buy the legs, then text graphics added just before Lucas lets go of Scott. Then when the audience is focused on Scott in the air thats when the CGI digital copy of Scott is in the air. Then when Scott finally reaches the tower and starts falling down the scuffle holding this is when the Cera is mixed with the digital copy of Scott so that gives a seamless fall to appear that Scott is falling through the scuffle holding.

10

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World Analysis Jay Smith S0045090

Here is also a great scene when Scott challenges Lucas to grind a rail all the way from the top to the bottom of the hill. In this shot they have added pretty much everything in CGI, one being the actual rail with CGI snow on it, CGI background with yet again manga style speed lines. CGI sparks coming from the bottom of the trucks and yet again with graphic text to give more enforces. Throughout the whole time Lucas is grinding the camera is always either focused on Lucas's face or the board besides when Lucas is jumping from one rail to another which is replaced with a CGI copy of Lucas.

This scene is when Scott meets Roxy for the first time, as you can see in the picture on the left you see that Scott is jumping over something and not wanting to be attacked by what is coming for him, all that you can really is as Roxy tries to attack Scott and there CGI smoke and little particles of CG snow. Then when Roxy yet again tries to attack Scott he times it right to punch her. As this happens Roxy is on a rig holding her, then as Scott punches her he is setting of a lighting trigger which then a silhouette effects comes in to play then the screen changes to multiple colours and a flair is added to give more of an impact.

This is where Roxy disappears, the three CGI effects that I can spot out is the CG flame, CG black smoke, then CG white smoke, then to top it off graphic text over the smoke.

11

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World Analysis Jay Smith S0045090

This scene I actually thought was very well done even though it has not much of an impact on the movie but yet I thought it was really great how they did this. As you see Knifes is waiting in the queue with Scott and his band, waiting to go and meet (Clash at Deamonhead) and you see Knifes face reaction which is something like Oh My God then as Kim passes the reaction changes to and 8-bit style, the eyes replaced with squares and the mouth is replaced with a oval shape, and the actual face texture is blurred.

In the shot, this is where Todd punches the highlights out of Knifes hair. As you can see you have a medium close up shot of Knifes back, then they have added graphic effects and graphic text (POW), then as Todd punches Knifes her head turns towards the camera and she turns you notice that the blue highlights have come out of her hair. So hear they have added CGI splatter which goes in the flying motion of when Knifes head is turned.

Here is the fight between Scott and Todd; this shot is striped straight from the comic book. To start of the fight you see that Scott goes to punch Todd then Todd stops Scott punch with some sort of force field. This is done by using a flair effect, then some sort of lines that comes out of the flair this gives more of a comic feel to the scene, and then Scott is placed on a rig to give the illustration that Scott is hovering in the air. Then the shot is changes to a silhouette effect, in my opinion this effect gives the feeling that Scott is trapped and no way to out. Then you see a close up shot of Todd's face now this is where they have added CGI effects to him Todd's eye is replaced with lights and then with CG smoke rising from his eyes. Then as Todd throws Scott out of the building, Scott is replaced with a CG copy. The screen splits into two; this is very much like a comic strip. As for here we have Todd punching Scott way up into the sky, the way that they did this is having a 12

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World Analysis Jay Smith S0045090 CG set extension, the matt painted in sky, with a GC copy of Scott, text graphics added, a green screen behind the van with plates from Toronto.

To continue the fight between Scott and Todd, Scott challenges Todd to a challenge of a bass battle. Before the battle starts you see wide shot of Scott playing his bass guitar and text appear (Bass Battle) this effect really dose put the movie into a gamers point of view because in most fighting games you have text that appears in some cases (Boss Battle). Then you see Todd's foot from the corner of the screen, yet again they have used a rig to make out Todd is hovering in mid-air. As the bass battle begins you see Scott playing but then few minutes into the battle when you see Todd playing they have added some flairs lights to give the illusion that Todd can play better than Scott and is more powerful when playing. Then as you can see there are plenty of plastic cups on the floor and when Todd is playing you see plastic cups flying toward Scott the plastic cups are replaced with CGI copies.

In this scene you have the vegan police taking the vegan powers away from Todd. On the set you have Brandon Routh, Michael Cera, and the two vegan police, the two vegan have their hands in the shape of a gun and lasers coming out of the tips of the fingers, this can be portrayed as if the vegan police have laser guns for hands. The way that they have done this effect is by first shooting the scene then adding the lasers in after; they have added a flair light and a laser effect. Then when the vegan police shoots Todd they have added text graphic in the background (ZUM) with a static effect that makes the text shakes then Todd is surrounded by green lights. Once the vegan police shoots Todd and draining his powers away you see a shot of the police blowing the smoke away from the tips of their fingers all they have added in this is just smoke CGI effects. Now you see a close up shot of Todd's face now instead of having real hair is has been replaced with a CGI copy which now is weak and not standing up as it was before, then this is where Scott head buts Todd which then Todd in replaced with coins. As Scott head buts Todd there is a slight flair light effect, then suddenly Todd is replaced with coin effects.

13

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World Analysis Jay Smith S0045090

In this scene we have a dramatic fight scene between Ramona, Roxy and Scott, in this particular scene they have added quite allot of visual effects. Just before the fight begin begins you see Scott and Ramona at the bar talking when suddenly you see a flash of bright light appear from the right side of Scott's face then you can see a slight hint of smoke which is CGI. One thing I do like about this scene is when Roxy is speaking to Scott and Scott has to get what Roxy and Ramona was together, you see that Scott goes onto a silhouette effect and the an light bulb with a meter inside to replace for a brain I thought that was a good effect. Now here when you see Roxy go to kick Scott they have added yet again manga style lines and a blue flair light to give more of an effect to the clip. Then suddenly you see a flash of bright light and Ramona's hand coming towards the camera, then from that you see a shot of Ramona holding Roxy in the air by her foot, the way that they have done this is having the set with the three characters Roxy on a rig, green screen in the background and then graphic text (VS) then Roxy flipping in the air which yet again was done with a rig and CGI background. Then Roxy brings out her razor belt with is all CGI, then Ramona goes through her small hand bag to bring out a huge hammer and as Ramons comes to her fighting stance the surroundings of the top the hammer is added with and 8-bit style effect. As for this part of the fighting scene you see this is a very complex shot with multiple elements added, the CG disco ball faces added in for reflection, flairs added to reflected the lights in the bar. Then you have a shot of Roxy when she disappears which is a CG copy followed by CG smoke, text graphic with flairs. This is another great scene in the style of an anime with the CG razor belt speed lines added in the background when the razor blade strikes Ramona's hammer CGI sparks and flairs added

This scene the battle between Sex bobomb and the Katayanagi twins has got be my personal favourite scene out of the whole entire movie. This part of the movie really blew my mind of how much visual elements they have added into this part of the movie. For me on my opinion this scene stands out among the rest of the effects they have added into this movie, it is absolutely fantastic. The way that they produced this scene is by fist of shooting the set with the Katayanagi twins twins on 14

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World Analysis Jay Smith S0045090 the keyboards then summoning the two dragons out of the speakers behind them which is all added in CGI, flairs added, then you see a shot of Scott stamping on his effect pedal then sex bob omb is surrounded by electric CGI effects which then in transformed in a yeti. Then you see another shot of the Katayanagi twins pressing the keys on the keyboard which wave effects are added. I then noticed when you see a close up of Gideon you see the reflection of the dragons and the gorilla in his glasses so there they have added effects in there. Yet again in this scene they have added manga style lines and comic style lines. Ok here is where we have the desk explosion were the two dragons have been defeated by the gorilla, there is a smoke explosion effect, desk explosion effect then CGI snow is added, CG coins that a flying everywhere and then to top it off you see and 8-bit style effect at the end for the points.

Here is the final battle between Scott and Gideon. As you see from this part Scott pulls out a sword out of his chest which is all made up of CGI, CG flames are added to give the effect that the sward is on fire. 8-bit style text are added, and here were have the fight scene were Scott has to fight Gideon's hipsters. In the fight scene they have added CG sword, CG flames, CG coins are added when Scott kills the hipsters, 8-bit style graphics. Also they have added flairs to add to the effect when Scott sticks the hipsters with his sword, lighting graphic are added in the background to give interactive flashes effect. Then once Scott has defeated all the hipsters you see they have added CG coins in the shape of the hipsters dead on floor basically an outline of their body. Then you have a shot of Scott running up the stairs to run up to Gideon, as you can manga style are added to give the effect that Scott is running up the stairs fast. Then there have a shot were Scott and Gideon are jumping in the air, this shot is another manga style effect, the background is green screen with CGI effects added, Scott and Gideon are on a rig, then you see a comic style split screen so the audience can see both of the actors reaction. As soon as the two swords strike each other flair lights are added to give an impact effect, Gideon's sword is made up by using an 8-bit style effect here you see the Scott's sword split into pieces this is done by placing a shatter effect. Here is the part when Gideon finally gets defeated; this is done by having Scott kicking a lighting trigger, then adding a blue screen Gideon, and then adding CG coins that explode, CG background with an 8bit style KO graphic text.
