It’s been many years since I took my first ski holiday, but the prospect of escaping to the snowy mountains is as exciting to me now as it’s always been.

Because that’s what skiing is all about, after all – the sheer thrill of it, each and every time. The sensation of gliding smoothly across fresh snow, feeling the winter sun on your face, and taking in the incredible mountain views.

All of that, and, of course, resting your feet somewhere lovely at the end of the day. Relaxing with family and friends and not having to worry about a thing. Which is where the superb team at Scott Dunn comes in.

I hope you enjoy exploring the options for your next ski holiday Both the team and I would love to welcome you to the mountains this season for fabulous skiing and happy times with us.

ANDREW DUNN

We like to go the extra mile for our guests, which is why in the four resorts where our chalets can be found, our resort team is always on hand to make sure you’re well looked after.

Both chalet and hotel guests in Val d’lsère, Courchevel 1850, St Anton and Zermatt can take advantage of our resort managers, our driver service and our childcare provision. fly helicopterorprivate jet

Your holiday begins the minute you pull the front door closed behind you, and that’s never been truer than when you charter a private jet or helicopter to get you to your destination. If you want your holiday to start in the best style, this is something we can arrange for you.

For a truly spectacular and fast-track arrival at your chosen resort, we can arrange a helicopter transfer from the airport rather than the standard inclusive road transfer. Or as a very special extra, why not book a private jet, you can set off when you want to, skip airport queues and enjoy the sheer glamour of it.

Private nanniesOur UK-qualified private nannies are chosen both for their expertise and their passion for looking after children aged 4 months to 13 years. They understand that when it comes to keeping young ones entertained, variety is key; which is why your children will enjoy a huge range of indoor and outdoor activities during their holiday, leaving you to enjoy the slopes knowing they are having a fantastic time.

Each day a nanny will come to your accommodation to collect your children, helping them change into their skiwear and generally getting them ready for the day ahead.

As children from 3 years old can attend ski school, those learning to ski will then be taken to their lessons enjoying lunch and an action-packed afternoon afterwards. A typical day for younger ones might include tobogganing or swimming in the morning, stopping for hot chocolate and a healthy lunch, followed by painting and games in the afternoon.

And because you shouldn’t need to worry about a thing, we provide all the baby essentials, toys, books, games and outdoor play equipment your children will need, depending on their age group. Just one less thing for you to think about when packing.

child care on and off the slopes

however young your children are, the snowy mountains should be just as magical for them as they are for you. this is why we provide premium childcare services in our four core resorts, available to both chalet and hotel guests.because we know that if they’re happy, you’re happy.

Page 12: Scott Dunn ski 2012

We operate a children’s club in Val d’lsère, exclusively for our junior guests aged 4 months to 13 years. Purpose-built and expansive, it provides a fun, caring environment with hundreds of toys, games and creative activities to keep your kids happy.

There’s a main play area, a chill-out room with a television and games console, and a sleep room for our very youngest guests. Because of the wide age-range, children are

split into groups to ensure the activities they take part in are suited to their ages and abilities. All in all, you can be safe in the knowledge that your children are well looked after in the company of their peers and our caring nannies, leaving you to enjoy the slopes to the full.

If you have any questions about our childcare services in the mountains, do call our family team who are only too happy to help.

To fall in love with skiing, everyone needs to start somewhere. As it’s as much about gaining confidence as skill, if there are beginners in your group we’ll only recommend resorts with good nursery slopes and excellent ski schools.

If you’re looking for advice about ski school, we can help. Open to children from age 3 and upwards, we can tell you which ones provide English-speaking instructors for both private and group lessons.

For those new to skiing, we can advise on what to pack, hiring the right equipment once you’re in resort, and generally how to make the most of your first exciting ski holiday.

Is there anywhere more magical to enjoy a white Christmas? Just picture it: a roaring log fire in your chalet tended to by your private host, a beautifully decorated Christmas tree illuminating the room, and snow gently falling outside.

Meanwhile an experienced chef is preparing a gourmet Christmas lunch with all the festive trimmings while you relax on the sofa with a glass of Laurent-Perrier champagne. Glorious aromas fill the air, all the more enjoyable in the knowledge that the washing up is not something you’ll need to worry about.

Boxing day will be just as special, with more festive gourmet fare to enjoy after a long day’s skiing. And because everything is tailored to your party, whatever dietary requirements or specific requests you may have, we can cater for. Simply let us know in advance and we’ll make everyone’s dining experience a special one. If you’d like to join us for Christmas, do speak to us as soon as possible. At this exceptionally popular time of the year, availability for an extra-special ski holiday never lasts very long…

If you love making fresh tracks through glistening virgin powder, or simply enjoying a long lunch in the sun knowing the pistes will be just as quiet and smooth afterwards, January could be the best time of year for your trip.

While all of February is generally busier across Europe due to varying half term holidays, January is quieter, often with great snow conditions. You’ll find the lift queues are minimal, and the local bars and restaurants will have tables available at any time of day.

oh so quiet in january

When you embark on a Scott Dunn holiday, we want you to feel on top of the world in every sense, and a heliskiing adventure literally takes you there.

For those looking for the ultimate off-piste experience, we offer North American heliski tours. Located close to Whistler, our partners TLH and Final Frontier Heliskiing will fly you to an area of pristine snow roughly ten times bigger than Les Trois Vallées in France. In the company of expert mountain guides, you’ll be dropped into

the untouched backcountry for an exhilarating off-piste experience like no other. Forget lift queues and crowds. Here you’ll have the entire mountain to yourselves, as if you’re the only people to have ever skied this terrain.

With just one group per helicopter, your guide is entirely dedicated to your group. There’ll be no waiting around, just endless thrills both skiing down through champagne powder, and flying back up against a spectacular mountain backdrop for more.

stanton

Page 65: Scott Dunn ski 2012

st anton is a gem of a resort: a lively, charming village, fabulous skiing with one of the best snow records in the alps, and unrivalled apres-ski, all served up with renowned austrian hospitality.

Resort facts and figures

Resort altitude: 1304m

Highest point: 2811m

Vertical drop: 1507m

Ski areas: The Arlberg ski pass covers St Anton, St Christoph, Lech and Zurs.

Pistes: 250km (440km for the Arlberg of which 29% Blue, 34% Red, 37% Black)

Best for: Good and advanced skiers. Beginner areas on the lower slopes. The Rendl gondola has made the skiing for intermediates more accessible.

On the mountainSt Anton offers some of the best off-piste terrain anywhere in the world. Without a guide, you’ll barely scratch the surface so we recommend Piste to Powder for excellent off-piste guiding. Heliskiing is also available here; and for those who love skiing but hate the cold, the Arlberg ski area has a number of chair lifts with heated seats. While some of the terrain can be challenging for those with only a few weeks’ experience, the Rendl area offers some easier runs and plenty of sun.

Off the mountainWith fabulous Tyrolean hospitality oozing from every pore, St Anton exudes character and charm. The village itself offers up the quintessential Alpine experience and there’s a wealth of good restaurants and shops to enjoy, too. The St Anton Wellness centre, the Well.com, is also a must for anyone who likes to be pampered, beating most other resorts hands down when it comes to spa facilities. It has an indoor swimming pool, paddling pool, outdoor pool, indoor and outdoor tennis, an ice rink, a fabulous gym, sauna, steam and massage rooms, and sun beds.

Après, dining and nightlifeSt Anton’s après-ski is legendary. Finish a great day on the slopes with drinks at the Krazy Kanguruh, or the Mooserwirt – arguably the best après-ski venue in the world! Eating out and drinking in St Anton is great value compared to many other premier Alpine resorts – and we think Austrian service and hospitality is the best in the Alps. The bars are alive from mid-afternoon until early morning, so there’s always somewhere to go if you want a night out.

Family and ski schoolThe Arlberg Ski School is particularly good for young children. There are good nursery slopes here, and a dedicated children’s area too. And as it’s one of our chalet resorts, we of course offer Scott Dunn childcare to our chalet and hotel guests.

For more information on St Anton, including our local knowledge of great places to eat, activities and maps of each property’s location, please visit: scottdunn.com/stanton

Resort facts and figures

Resort altitude: 1850m

Highest point: 2738m

Vertical drop: 1438m

Ski areas: Part of Les Trois Vallées, the largest ski areas in the world. Includes 6 other resorts: Méribel, La Tania, Les Menuires, Saint Martin de Belleville, Val Thorens and Orelle.

Pistes: 150km (600km for the Trois Vallées of which 13% Green, 39% Blue, 38% Red, 10% Black)

Best for: All levels of skier. Easy runs close to the village, steeper runs and plenty of off piste terrain further up the mountain and a wealth of blue and red runs make the Courchevel area great for all levels.

On the mountainWith a fast and efficient lift system linking to Meribel and Val Thorens, guests staying in Courchevel can enjoy access to one of the most exciting and extensive ski areas in the world. Across Les Trois Vallées you can cover miles and miles of fabulous terrain each day, while in the Courchevel ski area alone, beginners will love the gentle slopes running through the trees, and mixed-ability groups have a wealth of blues and reds to play on together. There are plenty of black runs too, as well as off-piste opportunities for more advanced skiers, along with challenging couloirs and mogul fields.

Off the mountainApart from its magnificent slopes, Courchevel has plenty more to offer. We thoroughly recommend going for a flight from the famous altiport or testing your culinary skills on a cookery course with Michel Rochedy, the double Michelin-starred chef from Le Chabichou. The toboggan run to 1550 is another favourite. There’s a farmers’ market on Wednesdays and the Forum is home to an Olympic ice rink, bowling alley, climbing wall and small gym. Paragliding, horse-drawn carriage rides, forest walks, snow-shoeing, cross-country skiing, ice karting and hot-air balloon rides are also on offer.

Après, dining and nightlifeCourchevel has a fantastic array of refined restaurants, piano bars, cocktail bars and nightclubs. Après-ski commences on the mountain at the Cap Horn or the Pilatus where there are resident DJs. There are six Michelin-starred restaurants between Le Praz 1300 and Courchevel 1850, as well as numerous other restaurants to suit every palate and taste. The two main nightclubs are La Grange and Les Caves.

Family and ski schoolThere are five main ski schools, all of which offer English-speaking instructors, and plenty of independent instructors, too. The Village des Enfants (Ecole de Ski Francais) has a crèche that takes skiers from 2½ years old. Of course, both chalet and hotel guests can take advantage of our own private Scott Dunn nannies.

you’ll never be short of things to do and see in chic and unique courchevel 1850. the ultimate skiers’ playground and a magnet for the wealthy, courchevel is the glamorous heart of les trois vallees.

Resort facts and figures

Resort altitude: 1620m

Highest point: 3899m

Vertical drop: 2279m

Ski areas: 3 areas: Rothorn, Gornergrat and Matterhorn glacier, as well as access to Cervinia and Valtournenche.

Pistes: 350km (of which 62% Blue, 69% Red, 17% Black)

Best for: Intermediate, advanced and expert skiers but with several beginner areas.

On the mountainA lot of the skiing here is high-altitude, with runs above 3000m. Intermediates will love the varied blue and red runs, some through the valleys where you can enjoy incredible views, some along wooded paths, and some on the glacier with the magnificent Matterhorn towering beside. Meanwhile, experts can enjoy various blacks, and more challenging terrain can be found off piste; and although Zermatt isn’t famous for being a beginner’s resort, it has recently opened two new beginner areas. Zermatt is on the Swiss / Italian border too, so you also have the option of skiing into Cervinia in Italy for the day.

Off the mountainAs well as having a wonderful atmosphere all year round, Zermatt is a fantastic cultural centre. The village itself is a pleasure to explore (especially by horse-drawn carriage) and there are all sorts of little shops to browse, fabulous restaurants, historic buildings and a museum.

You can travel up the mountain by train for dinner at the top; enjoy wonderful walks on foot or on snowshoes; and there’s an ice grotto to explore, too. There’s also a fitness centre, ice rink, paragliding, ice climbing and tobogganing; or for something truly thrilling, try a moonlit ski down the mountain, or a breathtaking helicopter flight around the Matterhorn.

Après, dining and nightlifeThere’s a wonderful buzz in Zermatt, and you can normally find a live band playing during après-ski hours at one of the many bars here. When it comes to dining out, you’re also spoilt for choice. There are over 100 restaurants on offer, serving everything from Asian, Mexican, Italian and Thai, to traditional Alpine Swiss fare.

Family and ski schoolFor young skiers, there’s a large ski school catering for all ski abilities, and Wolli’s snow park near the Sunnegga Paradise station. And with plenty of other activities on offer for the whole family to enjoy, Zermatt has so much to offer both on and off the slopes. And of course, childcare is available for our chalet and hotel junior guests from Scott Dunn private nannies.

zermatt has it all: a huge, high-altitude ski area, superb mountain restaurants and a lively car-free village, all in the majestic shadow of one of the most iconic mountains in the world, the matterhorn.

Page 111: Scott Dunn ski 2012

We have a selection of hotels in the Alps beyond our core resorts, chosen because they offer something special. As a delightful alternative, but still in Europe we offer a couple of lovely hotels in the Spanish Pyrenees and Italian Dolomites.

If you’re willing to go the extra distance, North America won’t disappoint. You can expect superb skiing, amazing scenery, and wonderful hospitality. In true American style, an unrivalled infrastructure that is run with military precision means less time queuing for the lifts and more time enjoying the spectacular runs and famous dry snow.

Whistler is famed for its vast ski area and unrivalled snow record, while Jackson Hole will add a little “yee-ha” to your day with its wild-west ambience and demanding terrain.

Taking its name from the abundance of Aspen trees, Aspen is brimming with old-world charm. Here you have four amazing mountains of wonderful varied terrain to suit all abilities. You’ll never have to ski the same run twice.

Chile is a great, if seemingly unlikely, alternative ski destination. The season here is June to October, when you can experience exhilarating off-piste skiing in Portillo, the country’s oldest ski resort.

If you’re interested in trying any of these destinations, we can tailor a ski holiday that takes you there. For more information go to: scottdunn.com/ski or contact our ski specialists on: 020 8682 5050
