Yearly calendar 2010 - 2011 Balornock Primary School - Glasgow September 2010 September is a quiet month, we have a long weekend holiday when we have a Friday and Monday off school, but no festivities. October 2010 Half term holiday Monday 11 th 18 th Halloween is 31 st October. We have parties in each class and the younger children dress up in fancy dress (often scary costumes) , ‘dook’ for apples and visit friends and neighbours at night singing a song, telling a poem in exchange for a treat. November 2010 5 th November is Guy Fawkes night, commemorating when Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the houses of Parliament in the 18 th Century. There are bonfires lit and firework parties on that evening. 30 th November is St Andrew’s day. He is the patron saint of Scotland. Unfortunately we do not get a holiday and it is really just a normal day with a few events in some places in the evening, maybe a ceilidh (a Scottish dance) or a special concert. December 2010 Our school closes on 23 rd December for our Christmas holidays. We have a Christmas concert in school the week before we finish and invite parents and on the last week we have Christmas parties and Santa Claus visits the younger children. January 2011 We return to school on the 5 th January after our New Year celebrations. On 25 th January is the birthday of Robert Burns, who is Scotland’s national poet. Our school has an assembly to celebrate his life and we sing songs, read poems and dance. The senior pupils have a ceilidh in the evening with invited guests

March 2011April 2011 April fools day is on 1st April. On this day

everyone tries to play a trick on each other….sometimes even the teacher will play a trick on the whole class. We also finish school that day for our Spring break. We are off for 2 weeks and return to school on Monday 18th April.We are also off on 22nd and 25th for Easter weekend.

May 2011 Monday 2nd May is a holiday.Friday 27th and Monday 30th May are holidays

June 2011 We finish school for the summer on Friday 24th. During the last week we will have a ‘leavers assembly’ All the children who are moving on to secondary school do a special assembly for the rest of the school and their parents reminiscing about their time at Balornock Primary. We also have a leavers disco
