EXTRA PROFITS FROM MJSIC

A Newark, NiJ. musicop has had a grand idea. He is arrangingwith one of the leading nite spots as well as one of the betterknown theatres in his home town to place the records of the notedband leaders they regularly feature on the first four spots in

his phonos for a very nominal weekly charge. The idea was orig-inally broached to him by the publicity man for this nite club. The plan is for him to place a sticker or placard on each one of

his machines advising the players of the first four feature rec-ords and also telling them that they can see and hear this ork

pilot in person at either the theatre or nite club depending on which spot takes the

ad for that v/eek, Prosont idea is to obtain Al. or per week per machine. The

club or theatre to furnish the signs. This op has about 300 phonos in town. He is

therefore also ready to make arrangements with other musicops to do the same and re-ceive the same remuneration . In this way the entire city will be covered with the

finest type of point-of-sale advertising that either of these places could ever pur-chase, The location owners are also to receive passes to the theatre and eliminationof ’’minimum” charge at the nite club on the quiet nites. Here is an idea for earningextra money from music equipment that can be placed into instant effect in any commun-ity, This plan is now being developed further by Barnet Sugerman of Runyon Sales Com-pany, Newark, N»J, who certainly deserves ’’Honorable Ifention” for its conception,

WHAT HAS THE ARCADE STARTED?

Do the huge numbers of arcades that have opened thruout the country portend a new typecoin machines business? Will this industrjT concentrate itself into big elaboratespots along the lines of amusement palaces? Is it reasonable to believe that peoplewho like to play coin operated amusements would rather do so at one centrally locatedspot just as they go to a centrally located boviling alley? Is this more profitablethan scattering machines about tovm? Isn’t it less likely to cause trouble becausemachines are then under constant control? Is the arcade leading the industry to anew plan of operation or is it singly a war trend? What do you think?

NO I.E.C, BAYS OPT

Dozens upon dozens of ballots reached us in the past few weeks since the Indoors En-tertainment Conference was suggested and put to a vote. In the midst of all thesefine vates and suggestions we received v/ere also a very few against the idea of hold-ing any sort of a conference at this time, Tho these were so far in the minority asnot to hurt, yet, we felt their sting* Therefore we decided to take ’’the bull by thehorns” as the expression goes and visit Uncle Sam’s ODT (Office of Defense Transporta-tion) to get an opinion* V/e believe we presented our case rather eloquently. We foundthe gentleman we spoke to in agreement with us that not only this business but manyother industries v/ere in need of meets at this time to discuss the problems brought' onby the war* Yet, he pointed out the need for us not to further tax the present cloggedti’^nsportation facilities. We bow to ODT, We believe that patriotism comes first andforemost, business or no business, as much as we feel that a conference of this in-dustry’s leaders is necessary at this time, V/e therefore sorrowfully report that therewill be no Indoors Entertainment Conference at the present time. Possibly there maybe one held this Spring of ’43 when transportation facilities may prove more adequate,

FIRST EDITION OF THE C.R.R .

With this New Year Special issue we present the first edition of the Confidential Rec-ord Report. One reason why we waited for this issue was so that we could start rightwith the New Year. We believe that this report is the most complete that has everbeen published in this industry. By saving ea.ch week's report, the musicop will haveone of the finest and most complete libraries of each record for every song recordedand its rating as per coin phono take, V/e also hope that our subscribers will postthe Confidential Record Report in some prominent place in their shov/rooms so that allother ops will benefit from it, too. We believe that by its thoroness and yet itsdirect brevity that it has soraetriing of the quality of an encyclopedic nature for theautoimtic music man.

I

WHAT ABOUT THE RETAILER PJ *45?

According to governr.ient economists retailers thruout the nation will continue on

more or less the same level as they did in ’42. That means they will be able to ob-

tain practically as much merchandise (in most categories) as they did in *42. About

the end of *43 and early in *44 they will really begin to feel the pinch. Coirmen

I

are most naturally interested in the welfare of the retailer since they are so close-

ly identified with him. As long as he will be able to continue to do business on an

even keel in *43 the co inmen are insured of their take. At least they are certain

I

that the take will be as good as in *42 and that they will be just as necessary

(if not more so) to the continued good welfare of the retailer, (Coin machines willi prove of greatest necessity to the retailer toward the end of *42 and into *43 if

these government observations are to be taken literally.

)

I

j

PARTS & SUPPLISS

j

As per our prediction - all tj/pcs of used parts and supplies have grown tremendouslyI in inportance. Note the many more ads appearing in The Cash Box on these. If you

haven't as yet catalogued the parts and supplies that you have on hand do so immediat-

ly. Those that you feel you will not need we suggest you list in your space in The

Cash Box for others thruout the country may be seeking them. You will not only be

raising some cash for yourself, in this fashion, but also helping other coinmen thru-out the nation,

mx REDUCE LONG DISTANCE RATES

I

Coinmen are constant users of the long distance phone. Tlie speed with which this in*-

I

dustry was nurtured ana with which it continues makes lo.ng distance one of the veri-table business necessities. FCC (Federal Communications Commission) is now studying

j

long distance phone rates with the vieTV of cutting down on them. One meeting washeld already. Another will convene on January 20th. FCC contends that present longdistance rates are bTirdensome to business,

LACK TRUCK DRIVERS

One of the most economical and therefore most important means that coinmen have fortransporting equipment (especially the large arcade equipment uncrated) is the longdistance truck. At the present tirae, ODT reports, there is a serious shortage of

truck drivers in 25 important centers in the country, ODT is seeking means to alle-viate this distress. Remember also that there are thousands of smaller communitiesin this nation served conpletely by truck, V/omen are being urged to get behind thewheels of these big buggies and keep ’em rolling,

SAVn^GS ARE UPPED AGAIN

The Department of Commerce in V/ashington estimates that individual savings in *42were at the unprecedented total of ^26 BILLIONS. This is twice as much as in *41and three times as much as in *40. The government is happy over this fact for thisis a definite preventive to inflation. Remember that the workers this past *42 hadover $40 BILLIONS more than they could spend. And with the public expected to beearning more in *43 there is all the possibility in the world that coingames v/ill gettheir share. In fact, many coinmen are preparing to earn even better in *43 than theydid in *42 now that they have learned the knack of locating machines to appeal to theplayers who have less time for relaxation than ever before.

Ngv'/ YEAR SPECIAL FEATUItES

We hope that our subscribers were pleasantly svirprised by the added features in thisNew Year Special issue. We realize that we put ourselves away out on the very end ofthe limb with our ’’Predictions Of Things To Come”. The giant-sized sheet on rationingshould be posted in every subscriber’s showroom, ’’The 1942 Market Report” will standre-reading. The ’’Confidential Record Report” is certainly something to start saving. We believe that our front page slogan can very well be adopted by all - ”*43 - TheYear For You And Me” - we hope that it will. Our usual ’’Coin Machines Merry-Go-Round”column and our regular features will probably get their share of attention, too. Weknow that the ads sre exceptionally well read and there are some real ads in thisissue. All in all we hope you liked our first New Year Special issue. We hope toprint many, many more for you.

Fore-wordThe equipment market is not only holding firm, but in most cases, has sho-wn a priceincrease. This is as yet generally tempered by the sales that are being conducted, tho spasmodically, here and there thruout the country. Average market conditionsfor the previous month (December) showed a definite decline in stocks of betterequipment

.

PinballBiggest surprise was the sudden zoom in sales of pinball games. This began aboutthe last ten days in November and continued right into December with the demand con-tinuing better than in many previous months. Prices are still reasonable in this

di-vision of the field. Later models are hard to obtain and prices here are guidedby scarcity. Such machines as Sky Chief, Liberty, Monciker, etc. command most atten-tion and prices are up for these. There are as yet many buys in the pinball field andthose who captiore these at this time will be ahead. The next few months will show a

price increase all thruout the pinball field (all things being equal) and by Springeven the secondary rated games will be hard to obtain.

MusicPhonographs were very steady thruout November and December. Prices remained stable.Very few true closeout offers. Later models becoming harder to obtain and pricesgoing up. Even old equipment now commanding respectable prices. Sudden sales of

wall and bar boxes began toward the closing days of November. Problem of obtainingcable may have brought this about. Generally, the music field is going to remainstable in both price and general operation. This is one field that has won the

respect of the entire trade for its stability. It will give even greater proof of

resourcefulness and adaptability during ’43.

ConsolesConsoles slumped off somewhat in sales during November but came back stronger in Dec-ember and from present indications will continue strong in January. Much of theslump was due to sudden rise in prices on all equipment in this field after two hec-tic selling months (September, October ’42). Consoles have once again won their wayinto greater importance in the field. Such units as Mills Three Bells and Four Bells,Keeney Two-Way and Four-Way Bells, Baker’s Pacer Daily Double Model, Buckley Track Odds

Daily Double Model and Keeney Super Track Time and a few others are in biggest demand.Prices now being asked for these are in extremely high brackets. The field will reachan anti-climax in sales during the cold (January, February) months.

ArcadeArcade equipment continues prominent. Demand hasn’t slackened one bit. Such unitsas Defenders, Convoys, Sky Fighters, Ace Berbers, Super Bombers, Drive Mobiles, Etc.are commanding best prices. These will get even higher prices after the cold monthshave gone by and the Spring season begins to poke its nose around the comer. Thearcade equipment field is at present the most active of all. The machines in thisdivision of the industry are considered most precious and fast selling. Tho manyold numbers have fallen by the wayside, even these are expected to be revived by the

Spring of ’43. Phenomenal growth of arcades thruout the country and the continuedopening of more arcades, as the weeks go by, will bring about greater demand. Watchthis field carefully. It has far from stopped growing. There is a general beliefthat this field may have the answer for the post-war period.

SlotsSlots jumped into the No. 1 spot during the Fall of ’42. They continue to lead. Moreand more spots are being opened for them. Tho prices are highest in history they havenot yet reached peak. The ’’profit factor” continues the slot as one of the most impor-tant of all machines. Note how many of even the very oldest of these have been broughtback to the field of late. The months of November and December (1942) were among themost active in all slot histoiy. January and Februaiy will prove just as active. Be-ginning late in February there will be a slight slump as preparation for the -warmerweather creates hesitation. Colder weather always proved best for slots. Warm weather, that keeps people on the outside, has generally not proven such good slot weather. But,re^rdless of weather conditions this coming year, slots will continue their upswing.Prices will become better stabilized. Also note lack of adverse p-ublicity regardingslots. Government licenses al2o perked them up in many territories.

One-BallsOne-Balls continue in demand almost everywhere. Demand greatly exceeds supply. Latemodels are in biggest demand, such as Club Trophy, »41 Derby, Pimlico, etc. The re-vamps which one factory has turned out have met with general approval. Older modelsare also being grabbed up. Many coinmen are doing some re-vamping themselves. One-Balls are among the most salable items in the field and will continue to be so for manymonths to come with importance and demand growing greater. Prices are still on an evenkeel. But, they are bound to go higher.

Re-yamps

Of which we have -written a great deal, are growing in importance daily. More good re-vamping is needed. Someone should also arrange to revamp counter games. And get thistype of revamp approved to come within the $10. per year classification. This wouldhelp the entire industry and help Uncle Sam to enjoy a lot more revenue. At the sametme someone is also needed to do some reasonably priced revamping on the $5. and $10.pinballs, Moi*e work in the 1—Ball field wo-uld also be welcome. Some clever revamp menon arcade equipment would prove of great help to arcades thruout the country. Inshort, the revamp field hasn’t even caught its first breath.

We predict that •within five years after this war is over that the

coin machines indijatiy will be among the largest user of freight planese 2rvice per capita as an industry.

We predict that beca-use of the speed with which machines will betransported from coast to coast that there will be an entirely differentand extremely foreign operating set-up to our present understanding of

general operations.

We predict that selling will become highly specialized and moreor less centralized.

W e predict that there will be operators in one state with routesmany hundreds of miles away in another state able to control theseroutes because of cheap plane transport facilities.

We predict that our present type machines will be looked upon asantiques and that the products which are now beginning to appear as but'•germs of ideas** will lead to an entirely different type of coin machinesfrom what we know at present.

We predict that the merchandise vendor field will be entirely revol-utionized and that into this field will enter huge manufactories withthe most extreme ideas to build up their own national and even inter-national operations.

We predict that among those men now engaged in factories that arecreating new methods for all types of manufact^jorijig will arise the in-ventors of tomorrow for this industry with the most ingenious types ofmachines ever dreamed of.

W e predict that this industry, because of the mary changes of eq-uip-

ment that will come about after the war is over, will entice dozens of

prominent and influential business men into its fold who will change theentire couise of its sales and operations.

We predict that for *45 and *44 we shall see the greatest resource-fulness, the most ingenuity and the finest type of effort that this in-dustry has ever known.

We predict that there will be a complete upheaval of what we now knowas the "leaders** in this ind'ustry.

We predict that the South American, European and Asiatic markets willprove even more profitable than will the domestic market within fi've yearsafter the war is over,

W e predict that influential banking institutions in Europe and Asiawin enter into negotiations for merchandising and financing coin operatedmachines in their countries and that manufacturers will have salesmen fly-ing to these foreign countries as regularly as they formerly had men travel-ing in this country.

We predict that if you* re still here fi've years after the war is overthat you* 11 be amazed at the people and capital that will be in coinmachines

ODD COINS”"Odd Coins'' is a new page starting with this issue of The Cash

Box. It's your page. We hope that you will make good use of it.

It's a homey sort of page. A bit of gossip, some fun, facts, news.

A picture or two (if you have them) and would like to moil them

to us to help illustrate your item. We realize that getting the

overage coinman to write is something like the story about the

rookie who stuck out his chin at the old sergeant his first day in

camp and cracked, "You can't make me shoot at anyone." And

the old "Sarge" gave him one of those looks, replying, "Maybe

we can't feUa, but we're gonna put you where a lotto other guys

will be shootin' at you — and you can decide for yourself." So,

before the other guy starts shootin' — get your shot in first.
