Content Learning Goal

• Students will learn what they can do to take good care of their bodies by learning about nutrients, vitamins and minerals and an example of each.

• They will also learn at least three harmful things they could put in their bodies and why to avoid them.

Eat Right!

• One thing you can do to take good care of your body is to eat foods that give your cells the nutrients, vitamins and minerals they need.

Protein

• Protein is a nutrient you need. It lets your cells grow and repair themselves.

• Some foods with protein are hamburger, cheese and beans.

• Can you think of other foods with protein?

Carbohydrate

• Carbohydrate is another nutrient your body needs. It gives your cells fuel (this means it gives your body energy).

• Foods like rice, bread and apples have carbohydrates.

• What are some other foods with carbohydrates?

Vitamins

• Your body needs many different vitamins. Vitamin C is a main vitamin we need. Lots of fresh fruits and vegetables have Vitamin C.

• What foods can you think of that have Vitamin C?

Minerals

• Calcium is a mineral that everyone needs. It keeps your skeleton (bones) strong.

• Milk and ice cream have lots of calcium.

• What other foods are rich in calcium?

Watch Out!

• Sometimes people eat drink and breathe things that can damage their bodies:

• They smoke too many cigarettes

• They drink too much alcohol

• They abuse drugs like marijuana, cocaine, heroin or methamphetamine

Chemicals

• Cigarettes, alcohol and drugs contain harmful chemicals.

• Cigarettes have a chemical called nicotine. Nicotine is often put in bug sprays that kill insects. This cannot be good for us!

Smoking by Income

• Why do you think that the less money people make, they more likely they are to smoke cigarettes?

Drinking

• Drinking too much alcohol damages the liver.

• What happens when your liver is damaged?

Drugs

• Scientists think that some drugs destroy nerve cells in the brain. This makes it so that it is harder for people to think. This could make them less smart or have bad judgment.

Meth

• The worst drug around is called Meth. There is a LOT of meth in Oregon. It is terribly bad for people. Let’s look at some men and women who have been using Meth.
