Per Juan-Carlos Aguilar, DOE Science Program Manager: “we are not rolling out NGSS…We are revising our current
science GPS in view of the vision for science education set forth by the K-12 Framework for Science Education and
the NGSS”
04/15/23 5
Precision review of the Science GPS will start in September of 2013.
Tentative date to submit revised Science GPS for adoption by the Georgia Board of Education is August of 2014.
Tentative date for adoption by the Georgia Board of Education of the revised Science GPS is November of 2014.
Professional Development for teachers on the revised Science GPS will begin in the 2014-2015 school year and will continue during the 2015-2016 school year.
First year of implementation of the new Science Standards will be in the 2016-2017 school year. Assessments will be aligned to the new standards at this time.
UPDATED TENTATIVE TIMELINE FOR REVISION!
Science Georgia Performance Standards
AWIM is a K-8 science and engineering based program funded by KIA with a three year implementation phase.
All 8th grade classrooms will use the JetToy Challenge during their Force & Motion Unit
Training for the JetToy Challenge will occur in September of 2013 prior to teaching the unit
The Motorized Toy Car is being evaluatedfor use in an exploratory class
The Glider Challenge is being evaluatedfor use in an ELT class
We are fortunate to have two content planning days for each subject area scheduled for the 2013-2014 school year
The content planning days will be two consecutive school days
The dates will be shared with you once they have been finalized on the professionallearning calendar
The remaining slides will touch onsome of the issues we will be discussingduring these content planning days
In early May, teachers came together to revise common unit assessments
Previous test questions and sample questions from other tests were used to develop preliminary common unit assessments
The process is not finished and will continue throughout the school year
The revised common unit assessments will be shared prior to teaching the unit
Although the tests have been revised with district assistance, please do not refer to themas District Assessments. Policy states that District tests (Benchmarks) are not re-tested
Constructed Response Items will be added to each Common Unit
Assessment Additional items will be developed for each
unit as supplemental resources The requirements and grading of the
constructed response items will be discussed in more detail during our upcoming content planning days
Formative Assessment Items will be developed for each unit that
should be used as Formative Assessments. These items may be constructed response
items as previously discussed or they may be in another format
Formative Assessment will be discussed in more detail during our upcoming content planning days
OAS (Online Assessment System) Due to a lack of computer lab time, OAS has
not been a practical option in previous years Additionally, OAS questions have not
been the best examples of aligned content (many questions are still from QCC objectives)
However, OAS has been revised In our efforts to develop constructed
response and formative assessment items,we will re-evaluate OAS items.
This past year, we started the process of curriculum alignment. The process is massive and it still on-going.
Content Unit pages will be revised or developed based on this curriculum alignment
Some content maps, concepts, or essential questions may be revised during the alignment process

Pretest window August 12th – 16th The pretest does not have to be given all on one
day The first unit overlaps with the pretest window
Remediate and/or Accelerate Days For most units, there are two days at the end of
the unit designated for remediation or acceleration Principals agreed to return to our previous
benchmark schedule; therefore, somegroups may have Benchmark II afterSpring Break
