Why Teachers Avoid Experiments & Demos
• Preparation – setting up a lab takes too long
• Materials – the equipment is not available
• Failure – it might not go as planned
• Risk – some activities are too dangerous
• Cost – it is too expensive to supply the class with the materials
• Content – I have too much material to cover
• Knowledge – I do not have enough background in science
Why We Should Use Experiments & Activities
Because getting into it is the
whole point of Science!
The application of the scientific method is the means by which the content of science is discovered.
And …It’s a lot more exciting that way.
Scientific processes engage the learner and require active learning…..
Found a Peanut …
• Let’s warm up our estimation skills
Exploring Matter
• Chemical change
• Properties of matter
• Catalysts
• Kinetic Molecular Theory
• Acids and Bases
Exploring Biology
• Mitosis and the Cell Cycle
• Cell size and magnification
Exploring Physics
• Properties of light
• Vision and the Eye
• Electromagnetic Spectrum
• Forces
• Electricity
• Sound
A Disappearing Pyrex Rod
• Investigating the effects of refraction in a liquid.
MYSTERIOUS GLOWING BALL
• Persistence of vision– White light appears to break down into its
component colors– Humans see three colors and all other shades
are a blend of these colors– Check out a TV set – Check out a painting by Seurat (a pointillist)
UV BEADS
• Explore the nature of sunlight or the effects of UV radiation
• Test with different SPF sunscreens while exposed to sunlight or UV
Hanging a Hammer
Magnet FUN• A great demonstration to show how a
magnetic force can cause an acceleration
• Or to slow a falling object.

Human Circuits
THE COAT HANGER CHURCH BELL
• Making a prediction ….
Singing Rod • Making inferences … controlling variables
Palm Pipes
• Exploring sound… Let’s play

Amazing Polymers
• Growing Crystals
• Magic Sand
• Sodium Polyacrylate (Diaper Polymer)
• Shrinking Polystyrene
• Instant snow polymer
Some simple experimental designs
• Goldenrod paper– An acid/base trial
• Funny Fish– What is responsible for the fish’s curl
