Week 1

Day 5: Project

Option 1: Make Thunder

Option 2: Make a tornado in a jar.

Make Thunder• Thunder is made by sound waves rushing toward each other as huge cloud fronts are

torn apart by lightning. First lightning strikes. That lightning superheats the air and increases the pressure around it, which makes the air expand so quickly it creates a (very loud) sound wave!

• Today we're modeling that process with our own thunder science experiment! It's an incredibly simple process, but it always takes a few tries to get it to work! You will need a paper bag (though plastic also works wonderfully...it just takes a little more precision!) and your hands. That's all!

Step 1: Blow up a paperbag with air.

Step 2: Pop the bagwith your hands.

Make a Tornado in a Jar

What you Need:1. A clear jar/ bottle with cap2. Water3. Dish soap4. Glitter (optional)5. Spoon

How to Make it:1. Pour the water until near full2. Pour for about a teaspoon of glitter3. Add some drops of dish soap4. Mix it well with a spoon. (If there are lots of bubbles after mixing, you can take the bubbles using spoon so it won’t block your sight)5. Close the jar/ bottle tightly to prevent any leaking6. When everything is ready, start to shake the bottle/ jar in a circular motion (It is better if you could shake it vigorously)7. You’ll see the tornado spinning inside the jar/ bottle

Weather forecast

A weather forecast is a prediction of what the weather will be like.

Each day, Monday through Friday, watch the weather forecast with your family (tv or phone). Record the weather for each day of the week using the attached forecast chart.

On Friday, analyze your chart and answer the questions.
