Dinner & Tour of the Basic Plasma Science Facility at UCLA Photo Credits: Gene Monnin and Richard Stamberg

On Tuesday, October 8th, Dr. Walter Gekelman, American Physical Society Fellow and Professor in

the Department of Physics & Astronomy at UCLA, gave a tour and presentation to almost 40 mem-

bers of the greater SCCAVS community. The talk addressed the state of plasma science, its achieve-

ments, challenges, and objectives, as well as vacuum design and engineering challenges faced by the

UCLA Basic Plasma Research Center team in developing one of the world’s foremost plasma physics

labs. With plasma technology being crucial to 15% of the US economy, Dr. Gekelman stressed the

importance of plasma science for the vacuum community in fields like semiconductors, thin films,

metallurgy, medicine, and surface modification, just to name a few. In addition to the tour of the To-

kamak Reactor and Large Area Plasma Device, he offered an amazing Technicolor computer visualiza-

tion he pioneered for finding complex 3D plasma structures hidden in large data sets. The over-

whelming feeling after the talk and tour was one of reinvigorated belief in the importance of plasma

fusion reactors in creating a limitless clean energy source to address current and future challenges for

the world’s ever growing demand.

The SCCAVS thanks Dr. Gekelman, Zoltan Lucky, and the team at UCLA for the opportunity!
