Time in ScienceTime in Science

Time is used in two waysOne way is to identify a particular moment in the past or future

It is just a time of day This is the way “time” is used in everyday conversation

The second way is to describe a quantity of time

“How much time?” A time interval is also a quantity of time

Any calculation that you do will involve time intervals not time of day

Many problems in science use time in seconds

For calculations, you may need to convert hours and minutes into seconds

Many problems in science use time in seconds

For calculations, you may need to convert hours and minutes into seconds

How many seconds is this time interval? CONVERT ALL TO SECONDS

2 hr x 60 min x 60 sec = 7200 sec

1 hr 1 min

How many seconds is this time interval? How many seconds is this time interval?

CONVERT ALL TO SECONDS

HOURS: 2 hr x 60 min x 60 sec = 7200 sec

1 hr 1 min

MINUTES: 30 min x 60 sec = 1800 sec

1 min

SECONDS: 45 sec

NOW---ADD THEM ALL UP!!!!

7200 sec + 1800 sec + 45 sec = 9,045 seconds

DistanceDistance

Distance is the amount of space between two points

Distance is measured in units of length

The English system uses inches, yards, feet, miles

The SI basic distance unit is the meter Prefixes are added to the name to describe very large or small measurements

Prefixes are added to the names of basic SI units such as meter, liter and gram.

Prefixes describe very small or large measurements.
