SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS ACADEMY AT ABERDEEN
at Aberdeen High School
Advancing Education, Enhancing Futures
Mr. Thomas Szerensits, Principal of Aberdeen High SchoolMrs. Donna Clem, Program Specialist of the SMA
HistoricalThis project began as a result of the efforts of the Army Alliance in 1999.
Federal, state, and local funds have been combined to build the facility, equip the classrooms, and train the faculty.
Partnerships are established with APG, federal contractors, and the professional scientific community of Harford County.
Academy Mission StatementThe Science and Mathematics Academy is dedicated to providing an accelerated and challenging program that emphasizes laboratory andresearch experiences.
Academy Mission StatementAcademy students willinteract with the professional scientific community as they develop the skills that will prepare them to be leadersin the areas of science, mathematics, engineering and technology.

Course Outline for Science, Research, and Technology (SRT)How will this course sequence integrate and support the core curriculum of science, mathematics, and technology while training our students to be future leaders?
Introduction to measurement, data collection, and data analysis
Introduction to the scientific process including experimental design, research, ethics, and the history of science
Introduction to presentation, including technical writing and speaking
Exposure to real world applications of the tools and techniques of science research
SRT I – Grade 9 (semester)
SRT II – Grade 10
Collect and Analyze Data
Design Experiments
SRT III – Grade 11Students are introduced to academic and career exploration.
The four areas of study are:
biotechnology/medical sciences pre-engineering and the physical sciences computational and mathematical sciences geosciences/environmental sciences
SRT III provides exposure to professional mentors and facilities for collaboration and assistance
SRT III helps students focus on an area of interest for their Senior Capstone Project
SRT III students meet with their mentor to develop a proposal for their capstone project
SRT IV – Grade 12Senior Capstone Project
Independent research, engineering, or mathematics project
Work with an assigned mentor from the professional field and facilitated by faculty advisor
Oral/poster presentation to peers, faculty, and science professionals
Integration of science, mathematics, and technology
