Science opens doors…The Russell Group of universities, which includes Oxford, Cambridge, King’s College London, released a guide for students called Informed Choices.

The guide lists “facilitating subjects” that are “required more often than others” for entry to university:

Even if you don’t intend to go to university the skills learnt in science are highly regarded by many higher apprenticeship schemes…

“By choosing facilitating subjects at advanced level, you will have a much wider range of options open to you at university. An A Level qualification in any facilitating subject will keep open to you a number of degree courses.”

Biologists work everywhere from jungles to arctic ocean liners and research stations

What skills will I get from biology?Biology helps you to build up research, problem solving, organisation and analytical skills. If you study biology, you will likely find yourself working on group projects, which will help you build your teamwork and communication skills too.

What will I study?• Biological Molecules &Cells• How organisms;

• exchange substances with their environment

• transfer energy• respond to changes in

their internal and external environment.

• Genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms

• Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems.

• Control of gene expression.

Why study Biology?Biologists are scientists who study the natural world and all the living things in it, from the largest mammals down to our very own microscopic DNA.

'Chemists get to do some seriously cool stuff – and it's all part of the job!'

Why study Chemistry?Chemists conduct experiments to study how elements work in different conditions, test how they mix, and work out what they are made up of right down to the tiniest particle

What skills will I get from Chemistry?Research, problem solving and analytical skills. It helps to you challenge ideas work things out through logic and reasoning. Chemistry often requires teamwork and communicationskills too, which is great for project management.

What will I study?• Physical chemistry

• Structure & Bonding• Energetics & Kinetics• Chemical equilibria• Thermodynamics & rates• Acids and bases

• Inorganic chemistry• Periodicity• Reactions of ions in

aqueous solution• Organic chemistry

• Alkanes, Alkenes & Alcohols

• Polymers

Why study Physics?

Physicists look for all the hidden laws that explain why all matter(that’s every physical thing) and energy in the known universeexists, where it comes from and why it behaves the way it does.

What skills will I get from physics?Problem solving, research, and analytical skills. With these skills you’ll be able to test out new ideas plus question and investigate other people’s theories, which is useful for any kind of job that involves research or debate.

'Physics makes the perfect career if you like asking really big questions'

What will I study?1 Measurements and their errors2 Particles and radiation3 Waves4 Mechanics and materials5 Electricity6 Further mechanics and thermal physics7 Fields and their consequences8 Nuclear physicsOption topic – Usually Astrophysics (Space)

Sciences at Millom…

• Specialist science teachers teaching within their subject areas.

• Tutor style lessons - Small class sizes mean more bespoke teaching.

• Teachers already know you – can help with your strengths and weaknesses

• Good track record of students achieving target grades.

• Enrichment (DofE, charity work, etc) – great for UCAS/ Apprenticeships

Level 6 in the relevant subject (Biology/Chemistry/Physics).

or Level 6/6 in Combined science. NO – While maths works

extremely well with sciences it is recommended but

NOT essential.

Do I have to study Mathswith sciences?
