Director of Education Dr. David Driman Director of Research Dr. Zia Khan Undergraduate Graduate Postgraduate Continuing Professional Development Anatomical Pathology Dr. Nancy Chan Program Director, MClSc Pathologists’ Assistant Graduate Program The Pathologists’ Assistant (PA) Program offers students the opportunity to train in the highly specialized field of anatomical pathology. This is a two-year, full-time professional graduate program. The first year is course based. The second year is composed of hospital rotations in autopsy and surgical pathology, a research project, and a two-month community elective at the end of the program. Upon graduation all of our students have found employment as PAs, many with multiple job offers prior to graduation. Bachelor of Medical Sciences (BMSc) Dr. David Driman Program Director, Surgical Pathology Fellowship Program The Fellowship in Surgical Pathology allows for training in one or up to three surgical pathology subspecialty areas. The fellow is a member of the relevant subspecialty team(s) and spends approximately 75% of his/her time on clinical service, the remainder spent on academic/research activities. Fellows are given time and direction to improve knowledge, skills and achievements in research and in the selected areas of surgical pathology. There are opportunities to participate in medical student/resident teaching and for presentation at discipline-specific seminars and rounds. Course & Practicum Based Program Research-Based Programs Dr. Chandan Chakraborty Chair, Pathology Graduate Program Graduate training leading to both MSc and PhD degrees in experimental pathology is offered on both a full-time and a part-time basis. A thesis is required for both the MSc and PhD degrees in research-based stream. The course work in these programs is variable and is geared towards providing a solid foundation for the students’ thesis work. The program trains students in diverse fields including molecular pathology, immunopathology, oncology, transplant pathology, neuropathology, and environmental pathology. Our students get the opportunity to use cutting-edge technologies of molecular and cellular biology to study pathogenesis, diagnosis, prevention and therapy of disease. Neuropathology Residency Program Dr. Lee-Cyn Ang Program Director, Neuropathology Residency Program The overall goal of the Neuropathology (NP) program is to provide residents with excellent training in all areas of NP. In addition, residents should have a good understanding of basic and clinical neurosciences to act as a resource person in clinical practice and research. After completion of training, the residents should have the knowledge and skills to pass the Royal College Examination and become competent practicing neuropathologists. They will be effective consultants, trained to fulfill all the CanMEDS Roles. Dr. Aaron Haig Program Director, Anatomical Pathology Residency Program The goal of the training program in Anatomical Pathology is to provide residents with high quality training in all areas of anatomical pathology. In addition to receiving training in all major areas, residents are allowed significant flexibility to tailor the program to suit their individual career goals and are encouraged to develop areas of scholarly interest. At the conclusion of the training period, residents have the skills necessary to pass the Royal College examination and function as effective and skilled consultants to their clinical colleagues. Dr. Zia A. Khan Chair, Pathology BMSc Undergraduate Studies BMSc programs in Pathology build on the foundations of anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, and microbiology and immunology. Our courses are designed to provide basic mechanisms underlying disease processes with an in-depth study of major organ system disorders. We offer several modules in the BMSc Program including an Honors Specialization and a Specialization in Pathology, and a Major in Pathology. In addition, we offer combined modules with other departments at Schulich Medicine and Dentistry such as the Honors Specialization in Biochemistry and Pathology of Human Disease, and the Honors Specialization in Microbiology and Immunology with Pathology. Surgical Pathology Fellowship Dr. Michele Weir Program Director, AFC Diploma Program in Cytopathology Our Area of Focused Competence (AFC) Diploma program in Cytopathology was accredited by the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) in March 2014. It is the first AFC in Cytopathology in Canada and the first accredited AFC program in laboratory medicine apart from transfusion medicine. It has recently been recognized as the model AFC competency based program for the RCPSC. This is a competency based program for advanced training in Cytopathology. The milestones include independent case sign-out of in-house and consultation cases, performance of Rapid On-site Evaluations and FNAs, and participation in quality assurance activities. There is a concomitant academic program with broad topic coverage including lab administration, quality assurance, medicolegal aspects and development of teaching skills. Cytopathology AFC Diploma Dentistry Dr. Mark Darling Chair, Undergraduate Pathology Dentistry Education The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry offers a four-year program leading to the Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree. The curriculum is continually evolving and provides graduates with the knowledge and skills necessary to enter general practice, pursue specialty training or embark on academic careers. Pathology is taught to the dental students in the form of General Pathology in the first year, and within the Oral Diseases courses spread over the first to third years of the dentistry curriculum. The final two years of the dentistry program are clinically intensive, providing students with a broad clinical experience emphasizing a comprehensive, patient-centered approach to oral health care. Medicine Dr. Mariamma G. Joseph Chair, Undergraduate Pathology Medical Education Our department offers a structured Pathology teaching scheme for Schulich students expanded over a four-year period. During Med 1 and 2 years, Pathology teaching is integrated into the Schulich system-based curriculum in the form of lectures and small group discussions. During Med 3 and 4 years, we provide an in-depth exposure to clinically relevant Pathology practice through selective, elective, case based seminar series and courses. During clerkship, our goal is to train our medical students to achieve certain pathology exit competencies we believe a graduating medical student should learn and demonstrate in preparation for and transition to residency. Students will learn how pathology interfaces with other areas in medicine and the central role pathologists play in patient care by working closely with other physicians helping them solve daily diagnostic problems. Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University Dr. Subrata Chakrabarti Chair/Chief, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Our leaders, academic and professional staff, technical and office personnel both in the hospitals and at the University continually demonstrate their commitment, hard work and passion to achieve a common goal. We continue to strive in teaching, research, and clinical service, the pillars of academic medicine. Department Chair Dr. Michele Weir Chair, Novel Education Resource Development (NERDs) Working Group The NERDs group is an educational interest group which provides resources and a community of practice for teaching activities, scholarship in education and leadership in education for the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (PaLM). The NERDs vision and mission align with those of PaLM with the addition of: creating and supporting an environment in our department for planning, developing, implementing, evaluating and sharing sustainable innovative educational activities involving teaching across all disciplines as well as scholarship and leadership in education. The NERDs have open forums in alternate months for our faculty and learners to discuss hot topics within teaching activities, scholarship and leadership in education. New Educational Resource Development Group Continuing Professional Development Dr. Joanna Walsh Director, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Continuing Professional Development The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (PaLM) hosts Grand Rounds every other month during the academic year, with presentations by a variety of internal and external speakers. Faculty, staff and trainees from both the hospital and the university attend these rounds and our community hospital partners have videoconference access via OTN. The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine also hosts well-received CME events every year. These events include presentations by various speakers from the LHSC PaLM Department and from outside institutions. These educational events are designed for, and attended primarily by, community pathologists and residents. The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine provides state-of-the-art diagnostic pathology and laboratory services while achieving excellence in research and education.
