Welcome to our 32nd annual bull sale! It is with great pride we offer this outstanding selection of Red Angus and Schuler Red composite bulls. This offering represents the top half of the bulls we pro-duce. They have been raised and developed on the ranch in a professional manner. It is no secret that the bull represents over half the genetic change for the cowherd and the bull buying decisions we make this spring will influence the quality of our replacements and feeder cattle for years to come. Please keep in mind that as we restock this nation’s depleted cow inventory, we have the opportunity to significantly increase the value of the supply chain with quality genetics that will pay dividends in the future, a future that looks particularly bright for the cow calf producer. You can take satisfaction in knowing that every bull in this offering has been bred and selected for cowherd-building traits as well as superior product traits that will differentiate the feeder calves they sire from the competition. Additionally, the dam of every lot has demonstrated her fitness to the ranch and has survived our no tolerance policy for cattle that do not meet our expectations for fertility, soundness and disposition. Recently, Tyson Foods and the Red Angus Association of American announced the Choice+ Premium Red Angus Grid for Red Angus-sired calves verified through the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program. This quality-based grid pays “Angus” premiums for choice, upper two-thirds, and prime fed cattle sold on the grid and will increase the value of your FCCP tagged cattle to the feeders who buy them. Myron Edelman, RAAA Director of Breed Growth will be available on sale day to discuss this new program.

Bull Delivery:• We deliver bull purchases FREE to central locations in Ne-braska and surrounding states. • A credit of $75 per bull will be given on each bull taken home sale day.• Deliveries begin immediately after the sale. If you prefer not to take delivery as scheduled, we will care for your bull pur-chases at our risk for $3.00/hd/day to cover feed costs. The cost begins on April 1st and continues through the date your bulls are picked up. • Please advise the sale clerks of an appropriate date for your bulls to be picked up and the appropriate feed costs will be included in your invoice. • We always appreciate your assistance in getting the bulls delivered in a timely manner.

About the Sale...To facilitate your evaluation and selection of the sale bulls, they will be penned by sire groups and will sell in catalog order. During the sale, bulls will not be run through the ring, but will be displayed on TV monitors throughout the sale barn. The bulls were videoed approximately three weeks prior to the sale. The video provides greater opportunity to watch individual bulls walk than the sale pens. Internet bidding will be avail-able through DV Auction.

Conference call biddingIf you are unable to attend the sale or bid over the internet, and wish to bid on animals personally we will have a conference call “bid line” during the auction. To use this service follow these three steps:

1. Call or email us prior to the sale date to get the bid line number and receive a PIN number as well as a buyer number.2. Call the conference number sale day anytime after 1 pm MST and enter the PIN number.3. You will now be able to place bids with our representative during the auction.

About the Catalog and Performance Data...The current EPDs, individual performance weights, ratios and ultrasound data are presented on every animal. Red Angus, Schuler Reds, Simmental and Gelbvieh now have a common base and their EPDs for performance and carcass traits can be directly compared to each other. Breed rank percentages are printed next to each EPD so you may quickly evaluate each bull’s predicted progeny performance relative to other non-parent Red Angus. Included in the catalog is each animal’s registration number so you may look up the extended pedigree information on-line at http://search.redangus.org/animal. TERMINOLOGY:Category & Percentage: Recordation and Registration structure that categorizes an animal according to percentage of Red Angus blood and phenotype.

• 1A – 100% Red Angus with no disqualifying characteristics• 1B – 87 to 99% Red Angus with no disqualifying characteristics• 2 – 1A or 1B with disqualifying characteristics i.e. scurred, black, ineligible white• 3 – Animals less than 87% Red Angus

AoD – Age of DamMPPA – (Most Probable Producing Ability) of the bull’s dam based on the weaning and yearling weight performance of her progeny. RATIO – Compares an individual bull’s performance for a trait to the average of his contemporaries for the same trait. 100 = average, over 100 above aver-age, below 100 is below average.BW – The animal’s actual birth weightWW – Adjusted Weaning Weight. Weaning weight adjusted to 205 days and age of dam.YW – Adjusted Yearling Weight. Animal’s yearling weight adjusted to 365 days of age.ADG – Average Daily Gain on testIMF - intramuscular fat (Marbling) as indicated by ultrasound and adjusted to a constant 365 days of age. REA - ultrasound Ribeye Area adjusted to a constant 365 days of age.SC – Scrotal Circumference adjusted to a constant 365 days of age.Fr (Frame) – Hip height adjusted to a constant 365 days of age. EPDs:CED - that an animal’s calves will be born without assistance to a two year old cow. A higher number indicates a higher degree of calving ease.BW – Birth Weight EPD. Progeny of sires with lower birth weight EPD values will generally be born with less calving difficulty and may be used as a predictor of mature size.WW – Weaning Weight EPD. A sire’s weaning weight EPD is an indication of growth to weaning. It does not indicate milk.YW – Yearling Weight EPD. The yearling weight EPD is a measure of growth from birth to a year of age.MLK – Milk EPD. Weaning weight attributed to milk production.ME – Maintenance Energy EPD. Estimates difference in mcal/month in cow feed costs. A lower number can indicate less feed cost or higher reproductive success in limited environments.HPG – Heifer Pregnancy EPD. The probability that an animal’s daughters will conceive to calve as two year olds.STY – Stayability EPD. Percent probability of an animal’s daughers remaining productive in the herd past six years of age. CEM – Calving Ease Total Maternal. The probability that an animal’s daughters will calve unassisted as two-year-olds.MRB – Carcass Marbling Score EPDREA – Carcass Rib Eye Area EPDNote: You may notice the abscence of TM (Total Maternal) or FAT (backfat) EPDs. One, to save space and perhaps more importantly to simplify selection we opted not to print EPDs which were already accounted for in other EPDs published in this catalog.

• TM is merely the addition of Milk + 1/2 of WW, so selection pressure for TM actually causes “double counting” of those traits from which it is derived. • FAT is an indicator trait for the economically relevant trait of YG (Yield Grade); higher Backfat will move YG in an undesirable direction. Backfat EPD is included in the YG EPD calculation, thus the impact of Fat thickness is accounted for in the printed YG EPD.

We want you to make the most informed bull buying decisions possible...My college beef production teacher told me, “...if seedstock producers use data as footnotes in the sale catalog, then performace data is likely only a footnote in their program.” We still abide by that lesson even though our oldest is now the college student. Thus, we provide complete performance data, ratios and EPDs on every bull in the sale - regardless of whether that information may help or hurt the sale price.

Another lesson we adhere to: Red Angus Association Core Policy #1“The policy of the Association is to discourage the more artificial practices in purebred cattle production…and to place its faith in objective tests of known heritability and economic importance...” We are proud to be part of a breed that pioneered total herd reporting, promotes the benefits of crossbreeding and believes that the success of its members is measured though their customers’ profitability.

There are many “artificial” ways to bias data, fertility and phenotypic condition of cattle. None will change their DNA but it may fool ranchers into using unreliable genetics that could screw up an otherwise reliable set of commercial cows. Raising cattle in artificial conditions makes for artificial data and expectations. There are no animals in this sale that have been given preferential treatment.

I began working with the Schuler’s 25 years ago and they were the first breeder that I worked with that had a tremendous interest and commitment in producing a high quality carcass. As a result I accompanied the Schuler’s on numerous occasions to packing plants 150 miles away to collect individual carcass data. They began to accumulate considerable carcass data on several bulls and a few of these bulls or their progeny became available com-mercially primarily through ABS. The Schuler’s had the interest in carcass quality before it was the “buzz word” because they understood and were committed to the entire beef industry. Schuler Red Composite BullsSchuler Red Composites have been bred and selected to be solid red, uniform in type and no larger in mature size than our purebred Red Angus. After more than two decades of development, our Schuler Reds have met our goals of allowing our customers to harvest harvest heterosis and breed complements while maintaining the convenience traits of Red Angus.

Development: Our foundation composite cows were a duplicate of the MARC II cattle developed at Clay Center, Nebraska which were 1/2 British and 1/2 Continental breeding. Gelbvieh and Simmental comprised the original continental influences as Red Angus and Hereford were the foundational British influences. In more recent genera-tions, genetic inputs consisting primarily of Simmental, SimAngus, and Red Angus have been used to create Schuler Reds. Every cow in our “Composite Herd” is registered with the Red Angus Association of America. Each Schuler Red composite bull is the product of complete contemporary group data. Their Schuler Red dams, grandams, and great grandams all participated in Total Herd Reporting (THR) just like their Purebred Red Angus herdmates. DNA, ultrasound, feedlot performace and carcass testing are employed to ensure our estimates of genetic merit are reliable. In recent years, Multi-Breed Genetic Evaluation has allowed Simmental, Gelbvieh and Red Angus (as well as Schuler Red Composites) to be compared on the same base and scale for Growth and Carcass Traits. The Schuler Red EPDs

in this catalog are directly comparable to Red Angus.

Schuler Red Nomenclature: You will notice the numbers 71, 62, 53 or 44 in the name of Schuler Red Composite bulls in this catalog; these numbers specify the approximate proportion (in eights) of British vs. Continental blood. The first number represents the eights of British influence and the second number represents Continental influence.

Why crossbreed? Heterosis, or hybrid vigor obtained through crossbreeding results in increased fertility & cow longevity. But, most importantly…improved profitability! Just three generations of straight breeding will result in an 87% loss of hybrid vigor for reproduction and production traits. Economically relevant traits of conception, survival and fitness are hit the hardest because they are lowly her-itable and respond slowly to selection pressure. The US Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC) reports an increase in pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed of 8.5% by simply raising crossbred calves from straight bred cows over purebred commercial calves. Maternal heterosis is the additional gain expected by comparing crossbred cows to straight bred cows raising crossbred calves. USMARC reports maternal heterosis will gain another 14.8% in cow efficiency, totaling the effects of individual and maternal heterosis at a 23.3% increase in pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed. While some of that gain can be attributed to higher milk production, it is largely the result of cow longevity and vigor.

Why use composite bulls? “User Friendly” - Composites like Schuler Reds are the simplest way to obtain the beneficial heterosis and breed complements available through crossbreeding. Schuler Reds eliminate the need to maintain multiple breeds of bulls and numerous breeding pastures for rotational mating systems. Uniform Calf Crops - Use of Schuler Reds will result in less biological variation across the resultant calf crop than rotational systems utilizing two or more parent breeds. Target calf value - Straight Angus cow herds can easily identify Schuler Red bulls that will result in 1/4, or 1/8th continental influence to benefit postweaning gain and yield grade while maintaining “Angus” marbling. Depending on their target market, Hybrid Baldy or SimAngus/Balancer herds can select Schuler Red bulls that will maintain 50:50 British:Continental influence or select Schuler Red 71’s to raise the percentage of Angus.

About the Bulls:Guarantee: All of the bulls in this sale have been semen tested and evaluated for soundness. They are guaranteed to be breeders for the first season but we do not insure them against death or injury. Insurance will be available sale day if you desire further risk protection.

Genetic Defects:Recent advances in technology have enabled us to test cattle for certain known genetic defects. No cattle in this sale are known carriers for any lethal genetic defects and any animals containing a known lethal genetic defect carrier in their two generation pedigree (without an intervening tested free animal) have been tested free by a Red Angus Association approved laboratory for said genetic defect and have met the Red Angus Association’s requirements for registration. Refund of the animal’s purchase price or replacement with an animal of equivalent value within one year of the sale date will be considered satisfactory settlement in the case of incorrect genetic defect information provided at the time of the sale.

Health:All the bulls in this sale have been tested free of PI-BVD. The cattle were vaccinated with Alpha CD at birth with Vision 7 and Inforce 3 at branding. At weaning they received Bovi-shield Gold One Shot. Post weaning they received Resvac 4 with Somnus, 7-way and an external dewormer. As yearlings, the bulls received Resvac 4 with Somnus.

Retained interest bulls:Schuler Red Angus reserves the right to collect, use and market semen on bulls designated by footnotes in the catalog or an-nounced from the auction block. Please allow us 45 days after the sale to collect semen and deliver designated bulls. The buyer will receive full possession and salvage value unless otherwise indicated. Schuler Red Angus also reserves the right to retain an in-herd semen interest in all bulls in the sale.
