Vera, Tanya and Jake are sitting at the lunch table discussing the half-term testthey are about to take in physics next lesson. The test is certain to be a toughone and Vera, Tanya and Jake are worried about it. Joe and Danielle sit down atthe table. Knowing that Joe and Danielle have taken the test earlier in the day,the three already sitting at the table ask Joe and Danielle about theassessment. Madison, a year 10 pupil, was asked to represent her school in a gymnasticscompetition. A year 10 pupil has never been chosen to represent the school ingymnastics before so she was surprised at the opportunity. Madison realised

Page 11: Schools Copy of Developing Good Character in UKCopy of Developing Good Character in UK Schools Welcome Welcome By measuring your honest responses to these questions we want to see

this could have an incredible impact on her goal of becoming a professionalathlete. However, after the first competition, she realised that she is notcomfortable because the coach has been using the girls’ good looks to getattention for the team from TV and newspapers. This includes photographs ofjust the girls wearing their gymnastic outfits. She realised that using pictures ofgirls like this for publicity goes against her own values and beliefs. Madisontalked with her best friend about her concerns. He stated that if she misses allthe publicity events then the coach would not take her seriously as a gymnast.Madison knows the importance of this opportunity. She has been told that if shedoes not take part in all team activities she will not be allowed to compete ordevelop her talent with the coach. However, she has always taken pride in herbeliefs and in the examples that she has set, and if she lets the coach use hergood looks in this way, she will promote behaviours and values that she feelsare very wrong.

Story 3 - Dave

Page 16: Schools Copy of Developing Good Character in UKCopy of Developing Good Character in UK Schools Welcome Welcome By measuring your honest responses to these questions we want to see

Things are going well for Dave in his final school year. He has a great group offriends and a girlfriend who he loves. His studies are going well too and if he getsthe full scholarship grant for university fees, he will achieve his goal of becomingthe first person from his family to go to university. Without the scholarship, Davecan’t afford to go. He is looking forward to going to university in his home townwith his friends and girlfriend who can afford to go without a scholarship. Dave’scareer advisor has told him he is borderline for getting the scholarship but wouldbe almost certain to get it if he can improve his A-level Maths marks. He hasaccepted the help of a school maths tutor to help him but he is not particularlypleased about all the study time because he has less time for his friends and hisgirlfriend in particular. However, he remains focused because he feels all the hardwork and sacrifice will be worthwhile when they are all at University together.Although his friends and girlfriend understand Dave’s situation, they can’t believethat he would pass up the opportunity to go on the final year trip to London duringthe Easter holidays. His girlfriend asks him to reconsider and warns him he istesting her patience. He really would like to go on the trip but he knows that if hegoes he will have to cut his studying time short since the A-level exam isscheduled for the day after he would get home and Dave knows he wouldn’trealistically study much on the trip. Taking the test the day after he gets backwouldn’t be a good idea either since he might be too tired to do well. If thathappened, all his hard work would be wasted. To top it off, his tutor mentionedthey will be going through some important practice sessions on the Wednesdayand Thursday before the exam which he doesn’t want to miss and he thinks willreally help.
