Please accept this invitation to our internationally acclaimed 23rd Annual Biomechanics Summer School™

Our conference theme for 2018 will be: “Managing Musculoskeletal Pain: Leading Research to Clinical Practice”

LBG Medical’s 2017 Biomechanics Summer School received international recognition from leading experts for being a world class biomechanics conference. We would like to continue this prestigious reputation and have secured a selection of world standard speakers for 2018. Again, our aim is to cover a broad spectrum of topics relating to biomechanics with a heavy emphasis on clinical applicability. Our goal is to provide something for everyone and this will be delivered through formal lectures, hands on workshops, case studies and “Top Tips” from the experts. We will be hosting the event again at the welcoming Marriott Hotel in Manchester. Set in the heart of the city, this venue offers convenient access and excellent service. On the Friday evening there will be a free of charge 3 course gala dinner including wine and light entertainment. This provides a perfect ambience to unwind from a full and exciting day and to catch up with colleagues, old and new. The Gala dinner is also an excellent opportunity to chatto our speakers in a more relaxed environment.

We look forward to welcoming you to the 2018 Biomechanics Summer School™.

Kim is an academic physiotherapist. She is a Redmond Barry Distinguished Professor and NHMRC Principal Research Fellow in the Department of Physiotherapy, University of Melbourne, Australia. Here she leads the multidisciplinary Centre for Health, Exercise and Sports Medicine with a team of approximately 30 research staff and students. She also

leads the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Translational Research in Musculoskeletal Pain. Kim’s research focuses on osteoarthritis and it has generated substantial new knowledge about conservative management including efficacy and predictors and mechanisms of effect of a range of treatments (eg. exercise, bracing, taping, shoe orthotics, acupuncture and footwear). Her work has influenced clinical guidelines and practice. Kim has over 300 publications, many in high impact journals such as JAMA (Journal of American Medical Association), Annals Int Medicine, and BMJ. She is Secretary General of the Osteoarthritis Research Society International.

Prof. Kim Bennell

Richard is currently Professor of Clinical Biomechanics and Director of the Salford Gait Laboratory at the University of Salford. He is also Salford’s clinical biomechanics lead at the Manchester Institute of Health and Performance. He currently leads the Knee Biomechanics and Injury Research Programme in the School of Health Sciences investigating the typical and

abnormal function and treatment of the knee joint. Richard has vast experience of biomechanical movement analysis in a wide range of neurological and orthopaedic conditions but his research focuses primarily on lower limb osteoarthritis, anterior cruciate ligament injury prevention and rehabilitation and conservative management of knee injuries.

Simon Bartold graduated from Adelaide University with a BSc in Science with majors in Physiology and Zoology. His further qualification in Podiatry was gained at the University of South Australia. Simon is the first and only person to have been awarded on multiple occasions the prestigious Best Clinical Paper award for original research at the Australasian

Conference of Science and Medicine in Sport. He has been an executive board member of the Australian Sports Medicine Federation and Past President of the Australian Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine and remains the only podiatrist worldwide to ever hold a commission position with the International Sports Medicine Federation (F.I.M.S.). Simon has published over 30 papers in high impact peer-reviewed journals and has lectured at international conferences in 33 countries. Research interests include the technical aspects of athletic footwear and pressure/force measurement in relation to intervention parameters and injury.

Conference Chair

Podiatrist Heidi MecklerBSc, MSc

Heidi qualified from the University of Southampton in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Podiatry. She then went on to obtain her Master’s degree in Clinical Podiatric Biomechanics from Staffordshire University in 2014. Heidi has worked as a Musculoskeletal Specialist for both the NHS and the commercial sector and has also run a part time private practice. As a former Team GB Judo player, Heidi takes a keen interest in treating sports injuries.

Once again the 2018 Biomechanics Summer School will include a FREE of charge 3 course Gala dinner and wine. Dr. Simon K. Spooner qualified as a podiatrist in 1991 from the University of Brighton. In addition to his BSc in Podiatry, he was awarded the Paul Shenton prize for his research into callus. He went on to complete his PhD in podiatry from the University of Leicester in 1997. Simon moved to Plymouth in 1998 where he worked as a lecturer in podiatric biomechanics,

sports injuries and orthotic manufacture. Simon eventually went on to become the Head of the School of Podiatry at Plymouth. In full-time private practice since 2005, Simon continues to research and publish in the field of podiatric biomechanics and speaks internationally on foot orthosis therapy. He provides podiatric care to a premiership rugby club, acts as a professional reviewer to the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association and sits on the advisory board of the Spanish Journal: Podologia Clinica.

Dr. Simon Spooner

Dr Kade Paterson is a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow with the Centre for Health, Exercise and Sports Medicine at the University of Melbourne, and a Sports Podiatrist with Lakeside Sports Medicine Centre. Kade’s research expertise is in lower limb biomechanics during walking and running, and he has a special interest in the clinical and biomechanical effects

of foot-based interventions for musculoskeletal conditions such as foot and knee osteoarthritis. He has published more than 30 peer-review articles in international journals, is a co-author of a biomechanics textbook and has presented at numerous national and international conferences. Kade’s clinical career has spanned 15 years, and he works widely with professional and recreational athletes and clubs from around Australia.

Dr. Kade Paterson BPod PhD

Eric graduated from the California College of Podiatric Medicine in 1987. As a student he won a paper writing contest sponsored by Langer labs. After completing a surgical residency he did a Fellowship in podiatric biomechanics at CCPM. He taught at CCPM for 14 years in the department of biomechanics. He has been in private practice for 15 years. He has written

a chapter on computerized gait analysis and co-wrote a chapter on the tissue stress approach to biomechanics of the foot. He also has published several other papers in peer reviewed journals. Eric’s passion is to distill academic knowledge into practical information that can be used to treat the foot.
