Music Curriculum

The Fairfax County Public Schools music curriculum encourages cultural awareness and provides opportunities for students to attain the knowledge and skills necessary to become musically literate, well-rounded individuals. Students work collaboratively with others to achieve common artistic gorals, thereby preparing them for a lifetime of engagement with the arts.

Music Curriculum

Through participation in Luther Jackson Middle School music classes, each student will:

As a critical thinker, improve individual technical skills on their instrument or with their voice.

As a goal-directed individual, develop & maintain routines and structure for independent practice.

As a communicator, respond to and reflect on musical performances (by themself or others).

As a global citizen, connect the performing arts to history and different cultures.

As a collaborator, foster greater connections with each other through making music.

Class and Assignment Information

A typical LJMS music class will include a variety of activities: music literacy practice (sight reading), listening and evaluations of performances, lessons in vocal and instrumental technique, work on performance repertoire. Social, get-to-know-you activities are included so students can build community as an ensemble.

Students may use Sight Reading Factory, Schoology, Pear Deck, and/or FlipGrid during the course of a class period.

Homework Information

Asynchronous work in the Music Department may consist of creating videos, listening and completing responses to music selections, music theory assignments and individual practice. Practice is an important of growing as a musician. We encourage students to spread practice out over multiple days rather than practicing a whole lot on one day. The more often you practice, the more effective your practicing will be.
