Betty AnesWho is Betty Anes? When I was asked to write a short narrative about myself, I kept procrastinating (Thursday night, 9:25). I thought about it, and the same thoughts returned over and over. First, Crazy Dog Lady. I cannot remember a time in my life that I didn’t have a dog. My last dog, Baby, was my constant companion for 13 years. I no longer have a dog, but I walk my neighbors’ dogs every night. It’s not easy driving the “dog wagon” with one in my lap, and a head out each window! I guess that’s where the word crazy comes from. Second, I consider myself a health nut. I believe everyone should walk those 10,000 steps a day, and eat healthy. I was a runner for years, and watched every bite I placed in my mouth. Now, I walk the 10,000 steps, but chocolate is my new best friend. Next, I love the outdoors! I like to garden, walk, bike ride, or just sit in the sun! Even the polar vortex couldn’t keep me in! Last, but not least, I am a teacher. I just completed my 27th year! No, I can’t retire. 8 of those years were spent in private schools. When I was young I thought it would be fun to teach on Hilton Head Island. I was right! I recently found out I was a Yellow on a personality test. Yellows are motivated by fun, and I didn’t think about retirement in my 20’s. My last 19 years were spent in the country at Trapp Elementary. There, I became part of a family that will forever be in my heart. Now, I find myself ready to start a new chapter in my life at Baker Intermediate. This transition comes with a mixed bag of emotions. However, despite moments of fear, I am ready for the challenge. Here, I hope to motivate young children to love learning as much as I love teaching!

Lisa AntoniouWelcome to 6th grade science! I am thrilled to be joining the team at Baker Intermediate School as I begin my 11th year of teaching. I’ve taught middle school science for ten years, six of which were in 6th grade. There is something truly special about this age group, particularly in their willingness to learn through exploration. Expect your scholar to be engaged in investigations to help him/her to learn science through hands-on inquiry based learning. It is my hope that my students will become scientifically literate citizens and lifelong learners of science . I live in Winchester, with my husband, Jon, and my daughter, Sydney along with our two pets, Noel (our dog) and Smokey (our cat). As a family, we love to camp, garden, swim, and pretty much spend most of our time outdoors. During the colder months, we enjoy reading, cooking together, and cuddling up to watch a beloved Disney movie. I’m looking forward to an exciting year as we embark on the journey of Baker Intermediate’s maiden year! Clear skies!!

My name is Stephanie Marie Barnett, I am twenty-four years old. I grew up in Rockcastle County where you will find the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame. After graduating from Rockcastle County High School, I was accepted to Eastern Kentucky University and attend August 2008 through December 2012. During both high school and college I was an active member of the color guard. Through color guard I learned how to spin rifles, sabers, and flags. I loved performing during football games and I still take time to spin today. I have one fur baby and her name is Riley Mae. She is a Sheltie, and many people call her a mini Lassie. When I am not in school or planning my lessons, I enjoy reading and hanging out with friends. This will be my second year teaching 6th grade Science, and I am very excited to be at Baker Intermediate School. It is my goal to make science and mathematics fun and engaging for students within my classroom. I want students to challenge themselves to become better academically, as well as become contributing young adults of society. Learning is fun, so let’s get started.

Who am I? Hmmm… I’m a Christian, wife, mother, daughter, friend, photographer, and teacher. I've lived in Winchester for the last eight years, but I grew up in that ‘other’ state, Northern Kentucky. For the last two years, I stayed home eating bon-bons, watching soaps, and napping… I mean, raising our twin boys. In the three years before that, I taught here when it was Clark Middle and really feel like I’m coming home. Unfortunately, the last two years weren’t all patty-cake and giggles; I also lost my father right after my boys were born. So, instead of focusing only on curriculum and test scores this year, my main goal for my students is to have FUN and learn while doing it. Life’s too short not to enjoy every minute! Lately, in my exorbitant amount of free-time, I like washing dishes, doing laundry, changing diapers, singing nursery rhymes, and watching Bubble Guppies. But, I started a business in photography earlier this year and that’s been a lot of fun, too! I’m nervous about coming back and having my kids in daycare, but seeing so many familiar, friendly faces helps and I know it will work out well.

My name is Katie Berner and I am a sixth grade English/Language Arts Teacher at Baker Intermediate. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Middle School Education from the University of Kentucky and a Master’s of Arts in Education from Georgetown College. This fall, I will be entering my seventh year of teaching sixth grade language arts. I taught language arts and social studies at Clark Middle School during the previous six years. My goal for students in my class is for them to see themselves as writers by improving their writing skills and practicing throughout the year. I also want my students to enjoy reading in the sixth grade, whether by reading magazines, novels, or even comic books. My husband, Collin, is the music teacher at Shearer Elementary. We have been married for 8 years. I am originally from Newton, North Carolina, but I moved to Beattyville, Kentucky where I eventually graduated high school. When I am not teaching, I enjoy reading, going to the movies, watching UK Sports, and gaming. I also enjoy spending time with my family, including my three nephews. During summers, my husband and I volunteer at The Cathedral Domain Camp & Conference Center in Lee County, KY.

Hello! I am Autum Byers. I have taught for 24 years in Nicholas, Grayson, and Clark Counties. I live on a farm in Fayette County and have lived there most of my life. My husband, Ned, and I have been married for 38 years! We have two biological children, Brett and Summer. We have raised several other children, Sue, Justin, and Tiffany. Away from school, I enjoy helping on the farm with the cattle and the garden. I also enjoy catching up with friends on Face Book and reading. I spend a great deal of time trying to keep up with Katlei, the seven-year-old who currently resides with us. This year, I will be teaching sixth grade social studies and science. In my social studies classes, students will get an introduction to the main regions of the world, in terms of both their uniqueness and similarities, to gain a perspective about social and cultural diversity of the world. In science, students will develop a positive attitude toward science and an ability to use the senses to satisfy curiosity about the natural world. I look forward to a wonderful year at Baker Intermediate.

My name is Angela Carter. I am from Harrodsburg, Kentucky and I moved to Winchester in 1983 for my first teaching job as a math teacher at GRC. After eight years there, I began my career as a school counselor at F. Bush Elementary before moving to the new Justice Elementary in the fall of 2013. After 31 years in education, I am excited to become part of the new Baker Intermediate School. I look forward to meeting our students as they enter this next phase of their lives. I want to be a support to them and to their families in any way that I can. When I am not at school or doing school-related things, I love spending time visiting my family. My mom still lives in Harrodsburg. Coincidentally, her last name is Baker so I can now claim ownership to two Baker teams. I love to garden, although I would never call myself a gardener. I enjoy fitness and reading and spending time with friends.

I am so excited to begin this journey and am blessed to have the opportunity to help build something special from day one. When I am not at school I enjoy spending time with friends and family and traveling. I also love going to concerts and the beach.

Zach ErnstHello, my name is Zach Ernst. I will be one of the two PE/Health teachers at Baker Intermediate School this year. I was born in California, and have also lived in Ohio and Delaware before my parents settled in LaRue County, Kentucky when I was 7 years old. I grew up playing sports and being active on my parents’ farm, so when I decided to go back to school to be a teacher, it was a natural fit for me to choose physical education. I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Sport Management and my Master’s Degree in Sports Administration at Eastern Kentucky University before receiving my Master’s in Teaching from EKU in 2011. This will be my second full year teaching, and I am looking forward to joining an amazing team at Baker Intermediate School. One of my main goals for my students is for them to recognize that physical fitness is a personal, lifetime responsibility that can be accomplished through a huge variety of sports, fitness, and recreation and leisure activities, along with a healthy diet. I also want my students to continue on in their current efforts to master cooperation/teamwork, sportsmanship and citizenship through sport and recreation. When I am not at school, I enjoy working out, running, playing golf, cooking, spending time with my friends and family, and watching my favorite sports teams.

I lived in Huntington, West Virginia to attend Marshall University for four years (Go Herd!). I now live in Lexington, and I absolutely love the bluegrass of Kentucky. This year I will be going into my third year of teaching. I have taught 7th grade language arts previously. My students will be able to read critically and communicate respectfully and insightfully. We will establish a classroom of mutual respect from day one. Students will learn to read deeply, catching messages in reading that authors may not have even intended. We will also write with purpose and power, providing evidence and proving our points so that no one can doubt how we feel.

I am from Cynthiana, KY, where I went to Harrison County High School and graduated with the class of 2000. I currently live in Lexington, KY. I have a six year old nephew, Forrest, who I adore very much. Following high school, I attended Morehead State University where I majored in Middle Grades Education focusing on mathematics and social studies. Upon my completion at MSU, I started teaching eighth grade at Clark Middle School. I have been teaching at CMS for nine years; throughout these years, I have taught all three (6th, 7th, and 8th) grades mathematics. I attended Georgetown College to work on my masters in Middle Grades Education. My classroom at BIS will be a safe and respectful learning environment for all students. I want students to work together in a successful way in order to accomplish their goal. By allowing students to work together they will be responsible for helping themselves and their partner understand the content. While they are working together and when they turn assignments in, I want to see that my students are using correct math vocabulary in their explanations. When I am not in school, I enjoy being outside (walking, pool, playing with Forrest) or playing Rock Band on the Xbox 360 or any driving games. I enjoy going to walk in the Arboretum or just to take our dog for a walk in the neighborhood. I am looking forward to a wonderful first year at BIS! I hope all the students had a wonderful summer and are excited about starting back to school. This is going to be a fantastic year!

Hello, my name is Neal Miller and I am a LBD special education teacher at the new Baker Intermediate School. I am from the Ashland, Ky. area and graduated from Russell Independent High School. While growing up, I played football and basketball, and spent lots of time working in tobacco. I have been teaching in Clark County Public Schools for eleven years. I spent that time working at McClure Elementary, working with students ranging from Kindergarten through 5th grade.I feel there are a number of very important goals for my students. It is very important for my students to achieve grade level knowledge each year in reading and math. Staying on grade level gives them the ability to continue learning content in the higher grades. Also, I feel it is very important for my students to learn there are consequences for actions. Positive actions lead to positive consequences. Negative actions lead to negative consequences. Students need to know this is not only true in school, but in life. Also, I like for my students to learn self responsibility. We discuss regularly that each person/ student is responsible for themselves. When you grow up, you have to be able to take care of yourself. When away from school, I like to camp in the woods, ride horses, go 4 wheeling, and go to bluegrass festivals. Also, through the years, I have spent much time at basketball games, softball games, cheerleading competitions, and soccer games to see my daughter and son compete. Finally, I like to go family dinners as much as possible so that we can all visit. It is fun for me to hear all their stories!

Shortly after graduation, I taught 4 th grade at Owingsville Elementary School in Bath County (where my family is originally from). I worked one year at OES before taking a position in Clark County. In August 2004, I was hired at Central Elementary School to serve as a 4 th grade teacher and my building’s Writing Cluster Leader. During my time at Central, I attended Eastern Kentucky University and earned my Master’s Degree with a reading and writing endorsement. I am a EKU Kentucky Writing Project fellow, as well as Kentucky Reading Project fellow. This fall I had the privilege of teaching 5 th grade at the new Wills H. Justice Elementary School. I look forward to my new endeavor at Baker Intermediate this year. My goals for this year are to make this transition as easy as possible for my students, parents, and myself. I want to maintain a family-oriented atmosphere with my coworkers and students. As always, my goal is instill a love for learning in every student that steps foot in my classroom. I want to make learning fun, enjoyable, and exciting for students. Motivating students to take charge of their education is something I will begin from day one. Ultimately, I would like for all of my students to become critical thinkers and be able to apply their knowledge and solve problems each and every day. Outside of school, you will find me spending time with my husband, Rob, and 2 year old son, RJ (Rob Jr.). We enjoying reading books, spending time outside, wagon rides, swimming, play dates, trips to the public library, and hanging out with friends as much as possible. In the fall, you will find us at every University of Kentucky Football game. When we are not doing those things, my husband and I are attending, supporting, and/or helping to organize fundraisers for our favorite organizations STRIDE, Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital, and Relay for Life.

Jerry SipesI am a native of Clark County, having lived in Winchester most of my life. I attended Central Elementary School and the former Conkwright Junior High School the very first year that building opened. Upon completion of eighth grade, my family moved to Lexington where I graduated from Lafayette High School then went on to graduate from the University of Kentucky with a degree in elementary education. After completing two years of college, my wife and I moved back to Winchester. I have completed 28 years of teaching in the Clark County School System. I began my career at Odell Gross Elementary in August 1986 where I taught 5th grade. Odell Gross Elementary closed when Strode Station opened. I taught fourth grade one year then fifth grade for the remainder of my tenure at Strode. I enjoy playing golf, riding my Harley and spending time with family and friends. Since becoming a grandfather, I love spending time with a very sweet two year old named Laura Kate. Family is very important to me. I have been blessed with a daughter who teaches elementary school and a son in law who works at the University of Kentucky College of Engineering and also serves as a worship leader on Sundays at Calvary Christian Church’s Mt. Carmel Campus. Teaching is truly an enjoyable job. I would hope to inspire my students to be successful community members, committed to becoming the best they can be while continuing to learn and grow throughout the different ages and stages of life. It is so important for each of us to be respectful of others, show compassion to those in need and serve others to make this world a much better place.

My name is Steve Smith. I am originally from Virginia, but after marrying a Winchester girl, moved here and have lived here for six years now. I taught 1 year in Virginia, where I taught 4th grade language arts and Virginia Studies, and have spent the past six years at Trapp. Two of those years were spent in the computer lab and the other four as the fifth grade teacher. I want the students who enter my class not only to learn the curriculum, but also learn as many life lessons as possible. I want each one of my students to be safe, care about their education, and be role model citizens. I love to hear great things about them after they have left my classroom. Away from school I have many hobbies. My favorite activity is snowboarding. I don’t get to go often anymore, but the thrill of going down the mountain with only a small board under my feet is the best. I also love archery. I am so excited to be teaching fifth grade science! I always knew I wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember. In my classroom, I want learning to be fun and engaging. I like to utilize many kinds of technology in the classroom and try new things during my lessons. When I am not at school, I love hanging out with my family and friends. God has blessed me with an amazing family and friends and such a wonderful career. I also enjoy playing sports, especially soccer and basketball. My family and I like to go to Cincinnati Reds and Bengals games. Reading is another thing I like to do when I have free time. I am thrilled to now be a Baker Bulldog and already can’t wait for the school year to begin!

I am Liza White Thomas and I grew up in Manchester, Kentucky. I received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education and Master’s Degree in Family Studies from the University of Kentucky. While completing my graduate studies, I taught preschool and kindergarten at the University Lab School and part time at The Lexington School. After moving to Owensboro, Kentucky I taught 3 years before heading back home to Clay County where I taught non graded primary, as well as kindergarten and first grade through 2002. My family relocated to Winchester, Kentucky in 2002 where I have happily taught fourth grade at Hannah McClure Elementary for 11 years. I have been the Writing Coordinator and fourth grade math teacher throughout my tenure there. My husband, Francis Thomas along with my son, Mark Francis Jr (GRC student) and I reside in Clark County and my daughter Anne Chandler lives in Lexington. In my free time, I enjoy long walks with my Jack Russell Terrier, reading and an occasional round of golf. Upon the closing of Hannah McClure Elementary, I am looking forward to furthering my teaching career in the fall of 2014 at Baker Intermediate School as a fifth grade math teacher.

My name is Mary Lou Warren and I have been teaching in Clark County since 1987. I am a lifelong resident and very proud of it. My husband and I have two lovely, grown daughters, Haydon and Taylor. They both live in Lexington, KY. In my spare time, I enjoy being outdoors. We enjoy hiking some, taking rides in the country in our jeep, and spending lots of time with family and friends. I love teaching. Every year I get so excited to see the new faces walk into my classroom. It is amazing how much they grow in a year’s time. They grow TALL and their minds grow, too!! My goal is to teach each and every student, to love them, and to create an atmosphere in which they want to learn. Becoming independent, creative and goal oriented thinkers is a key that will open doors for these students all of their lives.

Cindy WhitesideMy name is Cindy Whiteside. I am married and have two little boys. Brayden is 7 years old and Tristan is 5. They are full of energy and keep us very busy at home. My husband is also an educator. We hope to one day be able to travel in the summer with our 2 boys. I was born and raised in Winchester. I taught school for 13 years before becoming a counselor. I lived in Memphis for two years and taught 5th grade at an inner city school. It was a wonderful experience that taught me so much about children from different walks of life. I’ve mostly taught Science, but also taught Reading during my first couple years of teaching. I have been a counselor for the past 3 years. I love working with children in this way. I enjoy helping them work through their problems. I also love to help them recognize and appreciate their unique qualities and to focus on their own strengths. My goals for all my students are for them to be happy, healthy and resilient when life doesn’t go their way. I am an animal lover and would have one of everything if I could. My hobbies are reading, writing, photography, crocheting, needlepoint, and spending time with my family and friends. I enjoy swinging in my hammock at home and reading a book while my boys play in the back yard. To me, that is the perfect day.
