When the naonal compeons are held in Darwin, as they are this year, theyre held earlier in the year than usual, which has a knock-on effect for state, regional and school compeons. This is why our sport has been so front-loaded this year. So, at the end of Term 1, the bulk of our school-based compeve sport will be complete, but there will be lots of Pioneer Valley, Mackay, State and naonal sport compeons to come throughout the year. As I hope all our community knows by now, we live and breathe our moo of Pung Learning First. Every Child. Every Day.by striving to find beer and beer ways to meet the learning needs of our children. We allocate teachers me to work regularly with our Head of Curriculum to ensure planning aligns with the Australian Curriculum and is targeted towards the childrens needs, we work as a team providing each other feedback on children's learning by conducng weekly learning walks through classrooms and asking children about their learning, and through lesson observaons. Our progress data, which the teachers and I discuss each term, is showing that many more of our children made good or beer progress this term compared to Term 1 last year. This is definitely due to the hard work and research being undertaken by the teachers, but is also helped significantly by those parents who are geng their children in to school every day. Our overall aendance rate for Term 1 last year was 93.7%, wheras it is 94.6% this term. That is a significant improvement! Thanks, parents and carers, for making sure your children are in school to put their learning first. A parcular thanks to all families whose children's aendance rate beats our target of 95% or above; last year for Term 1, this figure was 55.2%. This term, its increase to 65.3%. And it is having a real impact on the learning progress of our children. While we do want the children here everyday, we need to set a firm limit on the mes during which we can have children on site. Legally, I would be failing in my duty of care to the children if I allow them to be on the school grounds without providing appropriate supervision. I recognise that some of our families work early in the morning, and this makes it difficult for you to get the children to school aſter 8:30, which is officially the me children should be arriving at school. Therefore, we fund an addional 30 minutes of supervision from 8:00 every day and up unl 3:30 in the aſternoons to try and facilitate those familiesworking lives. Unfortunately, we cannot provide supervision prior to 8:00 or aſter 3:30, and therefore any children on site before 8:00 will be asked to leave the school grounds. We do have a very good before school care program which is use by some our families, and is located at Good Start Walkerston. In fact, they offer both before and aſter school care. PCYC Walkerston is based on our school grounds, and offer aſter school care. If you would like them to offer before school care, please contact them and make a request, as its something theyve offered to our community in the past. Id like to extend my thanks to Mrs Norton and Mrs Bradley, both of whom are sadly leaving us at the end of Term 1. I wish them both all the best in their future endeavours! Finally, Id like to wish all our community a great holiday aſter a very busy term. Our last day together will be tomorrow, Friday 05/04, and we resume school on Tuesday, 23/05. Thursday of Week 1 next term is Anzac Day, and Id like to flag up to parents that a leer will be coming home with details about the parade, which all children are invited to aend in school uniform. Principal’s Report— Mr J Feeney

As we move into our last day of term, which very clearly has been the term for sport. When the national competitions are held in

Darwin, as they are this year, they’re held earlier in the year than usual, which has a knock-on effect for state, regional and school competitions. Cultural News

Choir

Well done to all the students who participated last week in the 27th Choral Festival. It was a wonderful evening with over 480 students performing 10 pieces. Thank you to KMEIA for creating this opportunity for students to combine and work with other students and perform at an authentic performance venue – the MECC.

Instrumental

Congratulations Claire, Ela, Scarlett and Maddison who have been selected to represent the school at a combined instrumental camp late term 2.

Musical

Congratulations to all who auditioned for lead roles. A cast list will be posted on Friday outside the music room. Rehearsals will start for all stage cast term 2 week 2 – Thursday 3 - 4pm. Backstage crew will not be required at rehearsals until term 3.

Recorder Band

With all the events of past week and notes coming and going we decided not to send the Anzac Day note home. We will organise placements based on students who have been attending rehearsals and adjust on the day. Anzac Day is Thursday week 1. We will meet at the school on Thursday at the water tower at 7.10am to set up. Miss Kay will then walk the students to the starting point of the march at 7.15am. Students will be required to wear their school uniform. We will be playing “You are my Sunshine” and “Don’t Bring Lulu” while marching. Students will also perform “Advance Australia Fair” and “God Defend New Zealand” during the main service. We may also be asked to play at the school Anzac Day service on Tuesday 23rd April.

An update on 3A’s Digital Technology Learning.

Each week, Mr Vassallo has been coming into our classroom and assisting us with learning essential skills on Visual Programming, using the program called SCRATCH. For the first few weeks, we were working on making the first two pages of our class Living V Non-Living Science game. Since then, four students (Jordan Ramos, Olivia Knight, Sophie Vassallo and Hannah Williams) have started planning and have begun their Home (or Landing) Page for their Cyber Security Information Game that they would like to enter into the Premier’s Coding Competition in five months’ time. On the 21st March we were fortunate as a whole class to learn a different way to make a Home Page and Sprites. This time, we used Paint as the tool to make our backdrop in SCRATCH. We found that choosing colours was a very important aspect to consider. Rather than using given Sprites, we drew shapes on our backdrop with text inside. We practised skills such as dragging, double clicking, selecting, shading, copying and pasting, deleting, loading and saving. We called this page ‘Space 21/3 is an equinox’ as Mr Vassallo explained to us how the 21st March was a special space day. The best part of having Mr Vassallo come to our classroom is that he has always brought his thumb drive to show us the games he has made during the week on SCRATCH. We LOVED his last informational game on Cyber Security. It was so, so, so, so funny to see Rexy and Minnie chosen as two Sprites. Thank you Mr Vassallo.

Year 3 Celebration of Learning Afternoon

Year 3A and 3B families were invited to come along and have a look at students’ work on Friday 29 March from 2:15p.m. In Mrs Gall’s class, the colourful array of Design Technology items created were hanging up for all to see. 3B also had their books and fossils on display showing work from different curriculum areas. In Mrs Scott’s class, the 3 or 4 fossils that the children had made were on display with a museum tag to provide more information. Some of 3A’s and Mr Vassallo’s SCRATCH creations were viewed by visitors. The Year 3 students were very excited and proud to show off their work to their families. Thank you for coming to 3A and 3B’s classroom.

Senior Athletics Carnival Wednesday, 3rd April. First and foremost, we would like to thank all students on their behaviour yesterday. Also like

to thank the staff for their co-operation and organisation so that we had a successful carnival. The atmosphere at the Senior Carnival was

brilliant. The students showed such a high level of sportsmanship. There was plenty of hand shaking, high fiving and cheering for their peers.

It was lovely to see. Thank you also to the school P&C for running a very successful canteen to keep the kids (and parents) energized.

Congratulations to all students that participated in the day and also to those that will be moving onto the Pioneer Valley sports carnival on

Thursday 2nd and Friday 3rd of May. Treacy house was the winning house for the day.

Congratulations to Ross house

for winning the ball games

carnival. And to the teachers who

had a win over the Year 6

students at the ball games this

morning. Thanks to Rob Kidd

from Star FM for helping out the

teachers team.
