Assalamu alaikum SAM Parents/Guardians, We were all shocked and saddened by the Islamophobic events in the United States and the violent Quebec massacre committed by a white supremacist against innocent Muslims earlier this week. Our prayers are with all those affected. As always, our top priority is the safety and well-being of each of our students—your children. This is a responsibility we take very serious-ly. It's important for you to know that we are taking several security precautions considering recent events. Locally, SAM is in the process of establishing a working relationship with both a security agency and Division 12 of the Peel Police to se-cure the facility as needed and arrange for regular police patrols when there is a threat to the Muslim community at large. Moving forward you may see security guards and/or an increased police presence at and around the campuses. This is not a cause for alarm; it is simply a proactive measure. In school, we have established and trained staff on lockdown proce-dures. In the event of a real intruder, SAM staff will be alerted to lockdown. Restrooms and hallways will be cleared, all doors will be locked, there will be an accounting for all students, and no one will be allowed to enter or exit the building. We will remain in lockdown until it is safe to resume normal school operations. SAM will alert parents as soon as it is safe to do so. In the upcoming weeks, SAM will begin performing practice lockdown drills with students. We recognize the grave impact that these events may have had on our children. You can support your child at home by using the attached tips for talking to youth after a tragic event. If you are concerned about your child or feel he or she needs addi-tional support we have hired a regular guidance counselor, Ms. Aziz, who will begin with SAM on February 7, 2017 Inshallah. Alternative-ly, you may wish to have your child speak to our faith leader Mr. Ib-rahim Hindy. Kindly email him at [email protected] to book an appointment for your child.
ALHAMDULILLAH!! We are thankful
to Allah (SWT) for being ranked
Number #1 in Ontario by the The
Fraser Institute!
Congratulations to the SAM
Finally, we will be attempting to secure govern-ment funding to improve our security infrastruc-ture which includes upgrading alarm systems, fenc-es, gates, lighting, security film for windows and motion detectors etc. But for this we need your help. If approved, the government will only fund 50% of the cost of the project up to a maximum of $100,000. We are hoping to secure the rest of the monies through your generous donations. We need to immediately upgrade our door entries and video camera system. The current cost is $20,000 ($15,000 for the cameras at elementary, $2500 for door security at each campus). You can donate by cheques (payable to Safa & Marwa Islamic School), cash, credit card, or PayPal (http://safaandmarwa.ca/donate/). Of course, Allah is our only true source of protec-tion. May Allah keep us all safe, protected and on the straight path. If you have any questions or con-cerns, please do not hesitate to contact any mem-ber of our admin team. Wassalamu alaikum, SAM Administration

We are honored to announce that SAFA & Marwa’s 4th Annual International Day was
a big success. International Day is a day where every class represents a
country; students dress up and bring delicious food from the country they are repre-
senting. Our students creatively decorated their classrooms and
transformed them into different countries of the world. Among those countries were
Spain, India, China, Pakistan, Australia, Bosnia, Italy, France, Germany and many oth-
ers. Our Grade 8 Boys class created a Muslim Utopian country named “United Um-
mah”. Students as well as parents and teachers enjoyed a fun-filled day with
excitement and delicious food from all around the world! Everyone also had a
chance to learn about those wonderful countries, their traditions and cultures.
But best of all every one enjoyed an awesome day and we look forward to an-
other amazing day next year inshaAllah!!

New Semester New beginning In life we encounter new challenges, we meet new people and make new
friends. Everyday, we hear about new products, new research, new TV
shows and at one point everything is new. However, a new life is not as
easy as simple to say. We need to have new beginnings and with new begin-
nings to reaffirm our faith. As a Muslims, we strive to learn what is new and
put into practice. Learning is a part of our peaceful faith that we have from
our creator and Lord; Allah (SWT). Our Prophet (PBUH) said “Seeking
knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim” (Saheeh).
Second semester (2016/2017) started February 1st. We should all take this day as a starting point for a new beginning
. Being prepared for a new semester is one of the most important adjustments during a school year. Lets all pray for a
safe and successful semester.

Safa and Marwa Islamic school Basketball teams participated in the ISNA School Tournament on November 29th and at As-
Aadiq on December 14th & 15th. High School Boys Varsity team played 5 games at ISNA and 3 games at As-sadiq.
“Muhammed Kan, the captain, showed his leadership and determination to win. The boys played valiantly and heroically”,
said Coach Adeel Ahmed. SAM High Boys team came 4th place at ISNA tournament and 3rd at Assadiq tournament.
“Obstacles do not have to stop you. If you run into a wall, do not turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go
through it, or work around”, and that what my girls did. This is how Ms. Alliyah Douglas the SAM girls team coach started
her talks about the SAM girls tournament. The Junior team showed strength and growth, while the high school girls
showed leadership and courage. “Proud to be their coach” Ms. Douglas added.
All the best for our teams, we wish them success and more achievements :).
IT’S A GIRL!
On Wednesday December 7, 2016, was a very special day for Safa & Marwa Islamic School, especially
for two of our staff members and their families. Allah sent a blessing to the Mallick family and another
blessing to the Marfatia family by giving them each their own beautiful newborn girl. Maareya Mallick
was born to Swaleha and Haris Mallick at 12:59 pm, and Zahra Iman Khan was born to Adil and Farrah Marfatia just before
midnight. Mashallah, both girls are very healthy babies, and have each brought lots of princess power to their household.
SAM family prays for the Mallick family and Khan family to have a successful journey with their newborns. May Allah pro-
tect all our children and give them continued success.

As humans, we naturally take most things in life for granted. I mean, we have breakfast in
the morning, when we wake up. A few hours later we have lunch. Then, close to the end of
the day, we have dinner. Be honest with yourself, did you ever, during these three meals,
think about the people in this world that do not even have a piece of bread to
eat, not in the morning, afternoon, or evening? Alhamdulillah, here at Safa
and Marwa, we were able to help out the people in need. Thanks to leader-
ship of Mr. Shahrukh and the SAM Student Council, we were able to contrib-
ute some food items to the Muslim Welfare Centre. Students from Grades 7-
12 were able to gather 367 canned food items. We would like to give a huge
thanks to all students, teachers, parents, guardians and administration who
helped to make this possible. Inshallah, our unity will continue to solve problems in this world.

Spelling Bee Competition
Spelling Bee (Arabic and English) are SAM’s signature
events. It is a great way for students to learn the language
of the Quran and enrich their English vocabularies with
some healthy competition. While some people believe it is
unnecessary, many students think otherwise.
“It’s a really awesome event because you get to challenge
your abilities,” said Farheen, a participant in the spelling
bee. However, there are some students who feel that the
event can be improved. “It would be better if they properly
reviewed the rules with the judges,” said Emaan, a student
in grade 8G. The students and teachers both worked ex-
tremely hard and it all paid off in the end.
Although these students got a position, alhumdullah every-
one who participated are winners.
