The school believes in offering a level playfield to all its students and with this in view Behavioral and Career

Counselling, Remedial Support Classes, Accommodations in Examinations including provision of extra writing time,

separate seating arrangements, scribes and amanuensis is provided.

Helping Hands, a program to provide academic assistance to the EWS students of the junior school continued this

year as well. Students were offered reinforcement classes that were conducted in partnership with the parents.

The ORKIDS Learning Centre that operates from within the school premises offered academic support to students

with special learning needs through remedial classes and use of customized learning methodologies.

Students from Grades IV to X participated in the Green Olympiad held on November 22, 2016. The result is awaited.

Pre Board examinations for Grade XII, Round I and II were conducted from December 12 to 30, 2016 and

from January 12 to 20, 2017 respectively.

Board Practical examinations for Grade XII were conducted between January 27 and February 13, 2017.

Four rounds of revision tests in Mathematics were organized for the students of Grade XII between January

20 and February 15, 2017 to strengthen and revise key concepts in preparation for the AISSCE 2017.

Summative Assessment II (Gr IV to X) and Annual Examinations (Gr XI) were conducted in March 2017.

Assessment of English Speaking and Listening Skills was conducted for Grades VI to XI as per the CBSE

guidelines.

The scheme of two rounds of class tests per session for comprehensive assessment of students was introduced in 2017. Round 1 tests for Grades IV to XII concluded in the month of August and Round II tests commenced in November.

Half Yearly examinations for Grades IV to XII were held from September 14 to 27, 2017.

With the objective of helping parents align subject choices in Grade X with higher education and career goals,

an interactive counselling session was organized with the Founder Director of the Institute of Career Studies,

Dr. Amrita Dass on January 21, 2017.

Summative Assessment II (Gr IV to X) and Annual Examinations (Gr XI) were conducted as per the following

An Orientation Session for parents of Grade V students to be promoted to Grade VI was organized on February

the parents to make the right choice.

Orientation Sessions at the commencement of the new academic year were conducted by the Principal, Supervisors, Academic and Co-curricular in charges with the aim of familiarizing parents of Nursery to Grade XII with academic, co-curricular programs and rules and regulations of the school.

National Cadets Corps training for girls was introduced in the school this session. An inaugural battalion comprising 25

girls from Grades VIII and IX under the auspices of NCC was trained and recruited with the governing philosophy of

developing character, comradeship, discipline, secular outlook, the spirit of adventure and ideals of selfless service in

view. As part of their first assignment, the battalion displayed their skills during the Independence Day celebrations in

August 2017 when they led the flag hoisting.

NCC classes are conducted twice a week under the supervision of the NCC Staff and Ms. Praveen Dogar, MSVV

Teacher Incharge.

Modern School, Vasant Vihar entered into partnership for the first ever Indo German Enrichment Program for student

teachers from the Eichstät Ingolstadt University, Germany. As part of this program, three German teachers, Mr. Julian

Robner, Ms. Ronja Thiede and Ms. Raziye Artekin carried out their internship at our school for a period of three weeks

from April 5 to 27, 2017. They taught English, Geography and Spanish to Middle School students. The program

provided teachers of our school an opportunity to share best practices and engage in developing new skills for

collaborative teaching and learning.

Ananya Barthakur, Grade XI and Sarthaak Chhibber, Grade XII were both selected into the National Golf Squad of India by the India Golf Union and are now eligible to contest selections for the Asian Games and the Junior Olympics. Ananya is now a Ranked Player in the World Amateur Golf Rankings for Ladies by the R&A, the governing body for Golf worldwide.

Devanshi Rathi, Grade XI, was selected by the PHD Family Welfare Foundation, PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the Junior Astitva Samman 2017 in recognition of her project “Checkmate” that aims to help underprivileged children learn Chess. As part of the project, Devanshi also worked with the National Association for the Blind as a trainer. In cognizance of her passion and enterprising spirit, the school invited a team of players from the National Association for the Blind for the first time ever to play in the Smt. Mohini Virendra Singh Inter School Chess Tournament in January 2017.

Ms. Meenakshi Sahni, Principal, was honoured by the Amity University, Lucknow Campus and Institute of Career Studies, Lucknow for Exemplary Leadership in the field of Education at the Principals’ Conclave on educational leadership held in Lucknow on January 28, 2017. The Conclave brought together eminent educational leaders and heads of schools like Doon School, Dehradun; La Martiniere, Kolkata, Shiv Nadar School to name a few. The gathering also shared their vision, strategies, innovative successes, concerns and challenges in the VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainity, Complexity and Ambiguity) scenario in their respective institutions. The award was presented by Prof. Debashis Chatterjee, Professor of HRM, at the Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow and Maj. Gen. K.K. Ohri, AVSM, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Amity University, Lucknow.

Jayansh Bhartiya, Grade XII, sent his documentary series “The Speaking Tree” to the World Wildlife Fund. The same was chosen for a project Adopt a Tree. He is currently working with WWF on a film for his Project Save the Wetlands which is about conservation of wetlands. Jayansh Bhartiya and Rohit Rajesh Gokhale, Grade XI, were awarded the Bronze Medallion in the ‘Group Category’ of the prestigious ‘DHFL Pramerica: Spirit of Community Awards’ 2017 for their project ‘The Speaking Tree’. They were placed among the top seven in the Bronze Group in India. A national level award, the 'Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards', is an annual nationwide search to identify and recognize school students who have made a positive difference in their communities through voluntary social service. The award is also organized in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Ireland, China, Brazil and Poland. Samyak Jain, Grade XI, was member of the team that participated in the First Tech Challenge organized by FIRST and secured the second position at the national level. The team was awarded the Winning Alliance Award and was invited to represent India at the World Festival for the First Tech Challenge at St. Louis Missouri, U.S.A. from April 26 to 29, 2017.

Indo German Enrichment Program

Vardaan Nagpal, Grade X, earned the rating of 2510 after beating numerous International Masters and Grand Masters in Chess tournaments in Hungary, Italy and Spain during the summer of 2017. His current rating is the highest in India and Asia and third in the world in his age category. He was also awarded the ‘Best Player Under 16’ in Solento, Italy in May 2017. Prithu Gupta, Grade VIII, achieved his first norm of International Master (I.M.) in Chess after a series of challenging tournaments in Serbia. He also improved his rank from seventh to first in an open chess round robin one tournament held at Prague, Czech Republic, earning his second I.M. Norm. Prithu also won the Delhi State Open Championship Under 13 category in April 2017. Very recently, Prithu made his mark in the Chess circuit of France where he defeated grandmasters and international masters from France, China, Armenia and Germany earning for himself the 9

th place in

the world Under 13 category and 3rd

place in India. Garv Rai, Grade V, played outstanding Chess in 2017 and raised his international rating from 1386 to 1804. He

participated in the following tournaments:

Mayor’s Cup, Mumbai, from June 4 to 11, 2017, securing the second Best position and a cash award of Rs.

6000 in Below 1400 in category B. In the category C, he secured the Best Position in Under 10 and received

prize money of Rs. 12,000.

Nainital Fide Rating Open Chess Tournament from June 20 to 25, 2017, securing the 13th

position among 188

players receiving prize money of Rs. 2500.

He was also awarded a scholarship of Rs. 40,000 by the Government of NCT for his outstanding performance in Chess.

Currently, Garv is ranked 4 at the national level in Under 10 category.

Ms. Meenakshi Sahni, Principal, was awarded the Women of the Decade in Academia Award by the All Ladies League and Women Economic Forum in May 2017 for excellence in educational leadership. Anamiya Bakshi, Grade VIII, became the first person to discover a unique mathematical concept involving the

numeral 9 according to which the sum of the digits of a number of 2 digits or more when subtracted from the number

itself leaves a remainder divisible by 9. She has received a copyright for her discovery and will feature in the 2018

edition of the Limca Book of Records.

Ekas Chaddha, Grade X, won in Category 1 “Frisch aus dem Labor” in an international competition titled Germany –

Land of Inventors organized by the Goethe Institut, Max Mueller Bhavan in February 2017. As a reward for his

meritorious performance, he has been offered a scholarship to attend a PASCH Youth Camp in 2018.

Ishaan Mangla, Grade XII, was selected to represent the Indian Team participating in the 14th

International Geography

Olympiad (iGeo) in Belgrade from August 2 to 8, 2017 under the auspices of the International Geography Union

Olympiad Task Force. His selection was based on his meritorious performance in the National level examination in

India in the session 2016 – 17.

Sara Bhasin, Grade XII, visited Poland as a part of the Indian delegation that participated in the Indian Film Festival

held at Warsaw from October 7 to 10, 2017. The festival was organized under the patronage of the Embassy of India

in Poland, The Polish Institute, New Delhi, Indo-Polish Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Indian Association of Poland

and India International Foundation.

Kartikay Goel, Grade XII, designed and fabricated an air purification mechanism to regulate the level of carbon

dioxide and particulate matter of less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter in the air. This unit will be installed in an old

age home. Apart from this, Kartikay is a regular student invitee to prestigious panel discussions on NDTV. In October,

2017 he was featured on ‘Left, Right and Centre’, where he spoke on the Supreme Court’s ban on the use of

firecrackers in Delhi and ‘The Big Fight’ where he shared his ideas and opinions on urgent issues like crop burning with

the likes of Mr. Shamsher Sheriff, former Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha; Ms. Anumita Roy Choudhary from the

Centre for Science and Environment and Dr. Naresh Trehan, Cardiologist, among others.

The International Award for Young People is awarded to students in appreciation of service, adventure skills, physical

recreation and residential projects. This year Siddharth Khandelwal of Grade XII received the gold award, Rohin

Gupta, Vedaant Aggarwal and Mehak Gupta of Grade XII received the silver award, Ranvir Rahul Sharma of Grade X

completed the bronze and silver level and graduated to the gold level.

Presently, our students Rhea Kapuria of Grade XI and Shriraj Singhal of Grade X are at the silver level while Ishaan

Banwait, Arul Jain, Aryaman Lal, Aryaman Agarwal and Ujjesha Singh of Grade IX are pursuing the bronze level.

In House Activities The school offers a variety of activities to counter balance academic rigor and to train students in co-scholastic fields. These range from visual and performing arts presentations to debates, quizzes, workshops and interactive sessions.

Founder’s Day was celebrated over two days, November 26 and December 3, 2016. The Founder, Lala Raghubir Singh, and his Vision were fondly remembered on both the days and the entire Modern School fraternity came together to renew their resolve to pursue Perfection and Excellence at all times. Ms. Ketaki Sood, Member, Board of Trustees, Modern Schools, presided as the Chief Guest on November 26. Rendition of popular songs by the students of Grades IV to XI was held in the school field as an Inter House competition. Also, a Mural depicting the themes of Diversity and Freedom that was created by the artists of the school under the tutelage of the Art Department was unveiled by the Chief Guest who also released the school magazine, the E Parag. Ms. Naina Lal Kidwai, Group General Manager and Country Head, HSBC India, was the Chief Guest on December 3. An art installation titled ‘Interface’ depicting the evolving face of communication courtesy advancing tech was unveiled by the Chief Guest who also gave away certificates and trophies for excellence in the fields of sports, co-curricular activities and academics to the young achievers of the school. A cultural program that included a play, a song, and a music and dance collective based on Guru Rabindranath Tagore’s Tasher Desh was also presented.

The annual Book Week of MSVV, was organized for the primary section from December 13 to 17, 2016 and offered a variety of engaging and interesting activities like storytelling, reading, book mark making, poetry writing.

A Traffic Drill was conducted by the students of Grade IX from December 22 to 29, 2016 with a view to gain an understanding of crucial issues at the center of the rising traffic menace in the city and the importance of safe driving. The exercise comprised the following:

o An awareness workshop by the Delhi Traffic Police personnel o A survey including collection of feedback and suggestions from the residents of Vasant Vihar, Staff

Members, Administrative Staff, PTA Members and drivers about the traffic problems encountered on a regular basis. The feedback gathered this year included:

A dire need of an awareness program for drivers The need to sensitize parents leading to a faster drop off Encouraging cycling / walking especially for students living nearby The need to install a traffic light at the T point outside the school main gate

o Implementation of the Action Plan as an actual Drill in which the students managed traffic at the back and front gates of the school.

The first Graduation Ceremony for the Class of 2017 was organized on January 25, 2017. Mr. Parvin Dabas, Alumni Class of 1987, an actor, model and director was the Guest of Honour. Parents were also invited.

The Annual Fete was held on January 28, 2017. The event consisted of a set of colorful stalls offering interesting

games, mouthwatering dishes, attractive shopping options, music and rides. Fabulous prizes were offered to the

lucky winners and a JAM session was organized in the school auditorium for the young enthusiasts.

The Annual Function of Grades I and II was organized on February 10, 2017. Young Modernites presented a musical titled, Bee…utiful World, and mesmerized the audience with their confident enactment and well-

choreographed dances. Ms. Lata Vaidyanathan, Former Principal, Modern School, Barakhamba Road was the Chief Guest.

Students of Kindergarten celebrated their Annual Day on March 10, 2017 with a recitation activity titled Poetry on a Platter.

A summer camp was organized from May 8 to 19, 2017 under the supervision of sports and activity teachers of

our school. Training in Dance, Craft, Music and Sports like Cricket, Tennis, Basketball and Football was imparted.

The Climate Reality Project, India, invited our school to host a Tree Plantation Drive to celebrate Earth Day. The

aim of the project is to create environmental and climate literate citizens Mr. Harinder Sidhu, Representative,

Australian High Commissioner; Mr. Blaz Slamic, Political Counsellor, Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia;

Mr. Dalton Sembering, Deputy Chief, Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia; Ms. Jessica Moncera, Head of

Cultural & Tourism Affairs, Embassy of Mexico, Mr. Jorge Meade, Head of Commercial & Economic Cooperation,

Embassy of Mexico and His Excellency Dr. David Goldwin Pollard, High Commissioner, Republic of Guyana also

participated in the drive.

The Young Achievers’ Award ceremony was held on April 21, 2017. Meritorious students from Grades IV and V

were felicitated for excellence in academic and co-curricular activities for the academic session 2016 - 17. While

students of Grades VI to XI were presented certificates of appreciation on April 28, 2017 in recognition of

praiseworthy performance in academic and co-curricular fields.

A special assembly was organized on May 12, 2017 and October 16, 2017 to bid farewell to Dr. Mandakini Lahari,

Ms. Richa Moodgal and Ms. Neena Nagpal.

The staff and students came together to pay their tributes to Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan on Teachers’ Day on

Tuesday, September 5, 2017. The Class of 2018 was joined by the entire student body to present a cultural show

and to express their love and gratitude for their teachers. A special photo op was set up and games were

organized by the PTA. Ms. Mini Sachdeva was felicitated for completion of 25 years of service.

The Annual Day of Grades II and III was held on Saturday, September 16, 2017. Students presented a musical

titled ‘Long, long ago…’ that talked about the evolution of our planet from its pristine state to the present state of

degeneration. Golden Leaves, an orchestra piece was also performed that showcased percussion instruments,

casio and other indigenous instruments. Ms Abha Sehgal, Former Principal Sanskriti School and Chairperson,

Sanskar Jyoti School was the Chief Guest.

Grandparents’ Week was celebrated by the students of Nursery in September 2017. A range of activities

including Craft, Cooking, Story Telling and Diya Decoration were organized with grandparents. The purpose of the

exercise was to encourage and strengthen bonding between children and their grandparents. The exercise

culminated with the celebration of Grandparents’ Day on October 13, 2017 with a presentation of four dances

expressing love and adoration for grandparents. A fun filled carnival was set up where the grandparents and

grandchildren enjoyed bonding time over games and food. An I Movie showcasing the activities performed by the

students through the year was also shown.

The Annual Green Fair, Modern School’s own green initiative, was held on October 17, 2017. This year too, stalls

that sold ecofriendly products were set up by individuals and NGOs, Tammana School of Hope, Delhi Cheshire

Home, Whole Foods, Very Special Arts, Impressive Crafts to name a few. The Fair was organised under the

guidance of Mr. Arjun Kashyap.

The annual Vigilance Awareness Week, under the instruction of the Central Vigilance Commission, the apex integrity institution of the country, was observed from October 30 to November 3, 2017. The theme this year was “My Vision – Corruption Free India”/ “ – ”. As part of the program and to encourage all stakeholders to collectively participate in the prevention of and fight against corruption, an Inter School Poster Making Competition for the students of Grades IX to XII was held on October 30, 2017 at August Kranti Bhawan. Additionally, a Vigilance Awareness Quiz was organised on November 2, 2017 to create awareness in the youth about basics of good governance and prevention of corruption.

Quizebate’17, an amalgamation of MOD Debate and MOD Quiz was organised on May 4 and 5, 2017. It featured the

35th edition of the MOD Debate, our annual Inter school multi format debate competition and the 30th edition of the

MOD Quiz, our annual inter school general quiz competition. 15 schools from Delhi, Mayo College Girls School, Ajmer

and B.K Birla School, Pune participated in the debate which was judged by Mr.Pranab Mukherjee and Mr.Sahej

Bhatia. 10 Schools from Delhi NCR participated in the quiz.

This was followed by a visit to the Army Training Centre, RRRC, at Dhaula Kuan, New Delhi. A cultural program was presented on the final day of the Conclave to celebrate the Independence Day. Mr. Mukul Rohatgi, Senior Advocate Supreme Court of India, former Attorney General of India and an eminent alumnus of Modern School presided as the Chief Guest.

MODEM, annual computer symposium, was held on August 25, 2017. Teams from thirteen schools from Delhi and NCR participated in seven interesting events - Code Core, Photo Q-Graphic, M Gamer, D3CRYPTEX, The Riddler, Through the Aperture and Compact. Mr. Rakshit Tandon, Consultant, IAMAI and Advisor, Cyber Complaint Redressal Cell, Agra was the Chief Guest, while Mr. Saurabh Aggarwal, Founder and CEO of Octro Inc., Mr. Saransh Taneja, Founder, Half Past Chaar and Mr. Sambhav Anand, student, Columbia University presided as judges. The 25th edition of the Economite, annual Economics Fest, was held on October 17, 2017. The judges for the event were Mr. Sanjeev Bajaj, Managing Director of Bajaj Capital, Mr. Vishal Sehgal, Managing Director, Nischay Educorp and Ms. Poonam Mathur, former HOD, Economics Department, Modern School, Vasant Vihar. Ms. Poonam Mathur had proposed, planned and organised the inaugural edition of the Economite and had remained associated with the event for 24 years. The talks and interactive sessions that followed focused primarily on the need to reform the education sector and move the accent away from tedious evaluation while making ‘learning for the sake of learning’ the focal point. It was deduced that to achieve the intended aim a complete turnaround of the sector is required and the need to lift rigid barriers (dictats and arbitrary regulations of central boards) is urgent. Heads were put together to work up a list of reforms that will make the education sector way more efficient than it is currently.

The Modern School, Vasant Vihar Alumni Association, an illustrious body of ex students, is now in its third year of

existence and continues to grow in strength. Presently the MSVVAA has over a hundred batch coordinators and a

large body of members along with an enthusiastic executive body from across batches working hand in hand with an

experienced set of office bearers.

In the past the association has hosted Alumni dinners and organized Alumni Golf Tournaments offering a platform to

ex and current students to contest on the course. This year in February the Alumni team also launched a publication –

‘The Modernite’.

July 15, 2017 Back to School, a Career Talk by the Alumni with students of Grades XI and XII was organized on July

15, 2017 in which they spoke about the choices, decisions as also the important lessons and

learnings, successes and failures they experienced while navigating their own career paths. The

speakers included Mr. Rocky Singh, television personality and corporate trainer, Mr. Vaibhav

Heritage Club

The Heritage Club is closely associated with INTACH and conducts several activities through the year to encourage

students to understand the rich and diverse cultural, architectural, living and ambient heritage of the country. As part

of this endeavor students receive ongoing training through workshops, interactive sessions and talks.

First Position - Kavya Jain, Grade VII Third Position - Anant Kumar Gupta, Grade VIII INTACH also conducted Content and Technical Workshops on July 28, 2017 and August 4, 2017 respectively to train students to develop relevant and appropriate material as also to understand technical steps involved in the execution of a film. The same were attended by two groups of students comprising Sharanya Jhunjhunwala, Nehmat Dang, Aryan Hakim and Chandni Gupta, Vivan Jain, Tanisha Gupta respectively. Our students Aryan Hakim received a special prize and a certificate for commendable performance in the quiz while Jia Bhargave and Riddhi Sharanya received special mentions.

Interact Club

65 units of blood were collected during the annual Blood Donation camp organized by the Interact Club on December

17, 2016 in association with the Rotary Blood Bank. This year the members of the Club also undertook a new initiative

by planning and conducting an educational trip to the Humayun’s Tomb with students of Grade V on February 3, 2017

as part of a buddy training scheme wherein senior students researched and prepared as guides and teachers for the

younger lot.

In another initiative, Grade XI students volunteered to run the school canteen for a week from January 23 to February

1, 2017. They focused on vital aspects of discipline, hygiene, costing and variety. The activity was a source of hands on

learning for the students and their report and feedback proved equally valuable for the school in terms of improving

the canteen facilities.

The Interact Club also organized the annual Inter NGO Sports meet on October 6, 2017 with an objective to provide

sporting platform to athletes from NGOs. Sports personnel from five NGOs took part in the action packed event.

As part of the programme, this year a group of nine students visited Japan from September 27 to October 5, 2017. The very interesting and informative visit offered our students an opportunity to explore activities like Calligraphy and playing the Khoto, a traditional Japanese musical instrument as also traditional Japanese cooking. The itinerary included visits to Asakhusa Buddhist temple, Mt. Fuji, Hiroshima Atomic Bomb Museum and Tokyo Disneyland. The group was also invited to the Indian Embassy for Gandhi Jayanti Celebrations and interacted with Mr. Sujan R. Chinoy, the ambassador of India to Japan.

Visit by Holton Arms School, Washington DC

Our school has been hosting students and faculty from Holton Arms School, Washington DC for the last nine years as a

part of an educational and cultural enrichment program. This year, a group comprising 13 students and 2 teachers

visited our school on August 4, 2017 while another group comprising 12 students and 2 teachers visited on August 11,

2017. As part of cultural and culinary appreciation the guests were engaged in day trips around Delhi and activities

like tile painting and stone painting as well as games like pithu and basketball in school.

Indo German Classroom Project

Our school is also engaged in an immersion program with Ferdinand-Von-Miller Realschule, Furstenfeldbruck,

Germany under the Indo German Classroom Project. The last three years have seen the project develop into a

coveted platform of learning, ideating and understanding cultural diversity for the students of both the schools. This

year the participants came together to explore ‘The Cost of War’. The German delegation comprising 12 students and

2 teachers visited India from October 1 to 12, 2017. A Panel Discussion conducted by Gen. Arun Sahni from the Indian

army, Col. Michael Martin Fricke from the German Army, Col. James C Allen from the American army and Ms. Liz

Bateman, Medical representative from Australia was organized in the school to discuss the implication of war for the

populace that is most affected by it – the armed forces and the general public as also the effects of diversion of

resources like food, medicines etc. The delegation also visited Agra and Jaipur for an educational trip and enjoyed

tours of the iconic landmarks of Delhi like the Qutb Minar, Bahai Temple, India Gate, Rashtrapati Bhawan, North and

South blocks, Akshardham Temple, Jama Masjid, Chandni Chowk, National Museum and Mahatma Gandhi – Ek

Pravasi Museum.

In continuation of the project, a group of 12 students and 2 teachers will visit Germany from November 27 to December 8, 2017.
