The school has recently been undergoing expansion which will not be complete for another several years. The schools PAN has been increased from 30 to 45 pupils per year group which means that when fully expanded there will be 2 classes per year group one of which will be mixed age. New classrooms have been built to accommodate the additional pupils in school and because we have a very generous school site they have not compromised the facilities we already have.In addition the school has had a new early years unit built ‘Little Herons’ which is a facility for any families in the local area to use. The unit provides additional nursery places for working parents entitled to the 30 hours funding and also funded 2 year old places. This is a fantastic new facility which we are lucky to have on our school site especially as it means we can offer lots of flexibility to the families in our school for early years provision.

The Buildings and GroundsOur school is situated in a large 1930’s brick building, it was once a secondary school for boys and was converted to a primary school in the mid-1970’s.

Our School

Robert Mellors School first opened in 1934 as a secondary school for boys only. At that time, girls were educated at Church Drive School on nearby St Albans Road. Robert Mellors himself was a local businessman, educationalist, county councillor and alderman who became chairman of school boards, a position he held for a total of 12 years between 1877 and 1901. Robert Mellors placed great emphasis on the importance of building character within young people. Upon opening, the school had a staff of 11 masters for eight classes, overseen by the first head teacher at Robert Mellors - Mr Donald McCunn. Mr McCunn served as a headmaster for 39 years, first becoming a teacher at the age of 12! During The Great War, he served as an artillery gunner, becoming sergeant and second lieutenant, as well as receiving the military cross for exemplary bravery and gallantry in operations against the enemy. Like Robert Mellors before him, Donald McCunn also believed in the core values of moral principles and good character.

Robert Mellors became a primary school for both boys and girls in 1974, taking on the feeling and appearance of the school you see today. One aspect of the school that still remains strong is the image of the heron, a bird that figures strongly in the history of Arnold itself. The early name for Arnold – Ernhal –is first mentioned in 1212, later evolving into Ernehale. It is thought to be Anglo Saxon for Heron Hole or Heron Corner and a widely used meaning for the name became “a village at the corner of the forest walk or boundary.” As well as the history, the bird itself seems an appropriate symbol of the school. In 1949, the Bishop of Southwell wrote to the school magazine, saying,” The Heron is a most enterprising bird and it augurs well for the vigour and initiative with which your children will meet the opportunities provided.” We couldn’t agree more and fully believe that the current Robert Mellors Primary Academy will continue to provide opportunities for children to develop in the same way as those heroes of our school mentioned above.

History of the School

Our aim is to work in partnership with families to provide the best possible care for their child and good relationships are crucial to this as well as good means of communication. We also recognise that parents/carers are hugely influential in how well their child does at school through the support and encouragement they are able to give. During the school year we try to organise a variety of events that families are able to join in as well as sharing information about how best you might be able to support your child. The school welcomes parents/carers who would like to get involved in school life in whatever capacity they can offer whether it be reading with children on a regular basis, helping on school visits or joining in class activities during special events. We also encourage anyone with talents/skills or other useful links that they are happy to share with school to share these with us too.

Fund RaisersThe school has a very friendly and successful fundraising group who organise special events in school to both raise money for school and for families to enjoy. The group make a huge difference to what we are able to provide our children in school and opportunities to bring families together through the social events they organise.

The school gate to the playground is opened at 8.40am and a alarm bell will sound at 8.50am to signal that the doors are open for children to go into school. We ask that pupils come in unaccompanied so that they build up their independence in looking after their own belongings.School starts at 8.55am.Lunch time is from 12noon to 1pm.School finishes at 3.15pm. Children spend a total of 27½ hours per week in school. Of this, children are taught for 22½ hours in Foundation 2, Year 1 and Year 2 and for 23¾ hours in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6. The rest of the time is made up of registration, assemblies, having lunch and playtime.

AttendanceWe place a high value on the importance of regular attendance. Poor attendance and persistent lateness are proven to be linked to underachievement as well as leading to low self esteem and difficulties in friendships. For this reason the school actively monitors attendance and will work with parents and education welfare agencies where this is an issue for a child.

There are attendance incentives run throughout the school to reward pupils with good attendance and punctuality. Snappy our mascot is often in the playground before school and also awards an attendance cup each week to the class with the best overall attendance. All lateness and absences are registered. If your child is ill or unable to attend, please telephone or write a short note giving the reason for their absence. It is our policy to contact parents if a child is absent and we have received no notification. If your child needs to attend the dentist or doctors please ring or send in a note to the school to explain their lateness or absence and when they are likely to return.

HolidaysThe dates of the terms and half terms for the school year 2018/19 are shown at the back of this Prospectus. The school also closes for staff training days, these dates are not always known at the time of publishing the prospectus but parents are given good notification so arrangements can be made.Due to changes in Government legislation we are no longer able to authorise any leave of absence during term time except for exceptional circumstances.

After School Clubs A variety of extra-curricular clubs are run at school by both staff and outside providers. These include activities such as sports, art clubs, design clubs, computer skills, dance, gardening and cooking. Clubs are offered to different year groups at different times and will vary over the school year and as new opportunities arise.

School Trips School trips form an important and exciting part of our curriculum as they provide first hand experiences that stimulate children’s interest and learning. We always try to keep the overall cost of the trip as low as possible. Parents are asked for a voluntary contribution towards the costs of trips. The school reserves the right to cancel any trip where voluntary contributions are insufficient to meet costs. The school has adopted the Authority’s standard Charging and Remission Policy, a copy of which can be found at the back of this prospectus. We also provide the

opportunity for our children in Year 6 to attend a residential holiday to celebrate the end of their time in school - tiring but the highlight of their year!

Outside AgenciesWe have very good relations with the School Health Service and other external agencies who can offer support for pupils. Medical checks, hearing tests and dental checks are carried out in school. Permission is sought from parents and carers first and you are invited to attend medical checks should you wish to.

“Learning Through Play”The children will learn through child and adult led experiences. As the children develop, they will take part in more adult led learning experiences such as phonics and mathematic groups daily. Every interaction is a learning opportunity.

Outdoor LearningAs part of the Early Years curriculum, schools are required to ensure that children have access to the outdoors. They will still be learning – it is not a playtime! For example, they may write signs for buildings, read number plates on the bikes or count how many beanbags they have thrown. We aim to make learning as fun as possible so that the children are really engaged and learn more. As we have an excellent reputation for good Early Years Practice our EYFS Lead teacher often leads training and provides support to other local early year settings.

At Robert Mellors School Primary Academy we believe that you need to inspire and motivate pupils in their learning if they are to perform to the best of their ability. We offer a dynamic and creative curriculum within which the knowledge, concepts, skills and attitudes from the different subjects listed below are taught in a meaningful and relevant way. Topic themes are studied linked to children’s interests, who are also involved in deciding what they would like to learn about.Within the curriculum the following subject areas are covered:Speaking and listening skills SpellingReading Writing Handwriting MathematicsDesign Technology ArtGeography Physical EducationEnvironmental issues ScienceInformation Technology MusicHistory Sex EducationHealth Education

The curriculum is differentiated to meet the needs and abilities of all pupils. The emphasis is on excellence and quality rather than on quantity.

We want pupils to have confidence and to feel proud of what they achieve.

Sports and Physical Education We teach a range of skills associated with sport and, equally important, the ability to work as a member of a team. We have very good sports facilities including a vast playing field and large school hall equipped with a range of gym and sports equipment. Our children play a variety of team games including football, rounders, cricket, mini hockey, and basketball. Children also get an opportunity to go swimming in key stage 2 which is funded by the school. We work in partnership with other sport specialists who may also support after school provision and our pupils take part in inter-school sporting competitions.

Sex Education Sex Education is taught in line with both the Governors’ and the Education Committee’s policies. Children’s questions are always answered honestly and factually as and when they arise, taking into account the age and stage of development of the questioner.Topics covered at Key Stage 1 (5-7 years) include: • Personal safety and keeping safe. • Moods and feelings. • Parts of the body/growing and developing/

keeping healthy.• Personal relationships and families. At Key Stage 2 (7-11 years) we also cover: • Reproduction - basic biology. • Emotional and physical changes. • Keeping healthy - diet - exercise -

immune system. • Differences and similarities.

Religious Education The school is not affiliated to any religious denomination and we follow the guidelines laid down in Nottinghamshire’s own agreed syllabus for religious and moral education. Our religious education, including Hall Meetings (assemblies), reflects broadly the nature of Christianity and addresses ideas such as caring, sharing, thinking of others, awe and wonder. We also believe it is important that our children know of other world religions and this aspect also forms part of our religious education syllabus. Parents have the legal right to withdraw their child from any or all parts of the Sex Education programme other than those elements which are required by the National Curriculum Science order. They also have the right to withdraw their child from Religious Education including acts of worship.

Safeguarding - Suspected Child Abuse Every school in Nottinghamshire is required to follow a set procedure in cases of suspected child abuse. Headteachers are required to refer their concerns to the Social Services Department for further investigation so that children at risk can be identified quickly. This procedure is intended to protect children from abuse. When a school refers a concern about a pupil to the Social Services Department, it is not accusing the parents of abuse but requesting that further investigation takes place to establish whether or not a child is at risk.

Equal Opportunities StatementThe school is committed to encouraging every student to achieve their best. We are also committed to the equality for all at the school.

Promoting Positive Behaviour We have high expectations of behaviour in school with an emphasis on praising and rewarding positive behaviour. There is an agreed whole school policy that all staff follow with a range of rewards and sanctions. Pupils are clear of what is expected of them and the possible consequences of their actions. They are also involved in resolving

any problems they may have and taught strategies in how to avoid conflict. We also like to work in partnership with parents over behaviour issues and in supporting school policy. There are a range of other ways that pupils are rewarded for positive behaviour and these range from getting stickers to receiving certificates. Each week we hold a `special assembly’ to celebrate pupils’ behaviour, effort, good attitude, acts of kindness or good work. Parents of pupils who have been chosen are invited into school to share in celebrating their achievements. We also attach great importance to developing social skills in our children. Children are taught how to deal with different situations, including bullying, and strategies they can use. The school does not tolerate bullying, racism, sexism or discrimination in any form and will proactively deal with any situations that may arise and follow up appropriately.

Race EqualityRobert Mellors Primary Academy is aware of its responsibility for the promotion of racial harmony and understanding. It is committed to creating a positive climate that will enable everyone to work free from intimidation and harassment and to

20

Inclusion & Equality

achieve their full potential.

Therefore: • we will use all the powers and resources as

its disposal to eliminate racial incidents; • we will ensure that any complaint of

racial harassment is promptly investigated and that everyone is aware of their responsibility and the procedures to challenge and report it when it arises;

• we will work with parents, communities and other agencies to ensure that it is clearly understood that racial harassment is unacceptable.

Pupils with Additional NeedsWe pride ourselves on being an inclusive school and Ofsted judged us as providing ‘GOOD’ care for pupils.

It is our policy to cater for the individual needs of all our children whatever their ability. Pupils with particular needs may receive additional support through an Individual Education Programme. Progress is regularly monitored and intervention strategies put in place where pupils are not making expected progress. Our experienced teaching assistants are skilled in offering individual and small group support for pupils in liaison with the class teachers. Our school SENDCO (Special Needs Co-ordinator) is responsible for monitoring and coordinating support for pupils with additional needs. They are also able to contact more specialist support where needed such as the school doctor, educational psychologist or speech and language support. Parents are always fully involved in agreeing to access any outside agency support, in attending meetings and receive copies of all communications.Disclaimer The information given in this prospectus which relates to the school year 2018/2019 was valid at the time of printing. It should not be assumed that there will be no changes affecting either the arrangements generally described in this prospectus or in any particular part of them before the start of the school year 2018/2019 or in subsequent years. Any anticipated changes have been included as part of the text.

Procedure for Complaints about the School Curriculum and Other Related Issues Under Section 23 of the 1988 Education Act the Local Education Authority have agreed a procedure for dealing with any complaints about the school curriculum and other related issues. A copy of the full complaints procedure is available for reference in school. The procedure provides: • That there should normally be a preliminary

informal discussion with the Headteacher or other appropriate school staff to see if the complaint can be resolved without recourse to the formal procedures.

• That if the complaint cannot be resolved informally the complainant should write either to the Clerk of the Governing Body, whose address is available at the school office.

Charging and Remissions Policy for School Activities (Primary Schools) General Principles The School Governing Body, like the Education Committee, is committed to the general principle of free education. In determining the charging and remissions policies which are set out in this document the Governors have been mindful of the policy statement produced by the Nottinghamshire Education Committee and have also taken account of the Committee’s Entitlement Curriculum. The Governing Body recognises the valuable contribution that a wide range of activities, including school visits, residential experiences and clubs, can make towards all aspects of pupils’ education. The Governing Body would accordingly wish to promote and provide as far as possible such activities as part of a broad and balanced curriculum for the benefit of pupils of the school.

Charges The Governing Body reserves the right to make a charge for the following activities which may from time to time be organised by the school. Residential Activities Held During School Hours Charges may be made for the board and lodging element of those residential activities which take place during school hours. Parents will be notified in advance of any such activities which the school proposes to organise and the estimated cost. Parental consent will be obtained for their children’s participation in any such activities for which a charge may be made. Any charge for a particular activity will be calculated by reference to the actual cost of providing the board and lodging for each pupil; no other costs will be covered by the charge. Any remission arrangements for such activities will be at the discretion of the Governing Body EXCEPT in the circumstances described below. Activities Held Outside School HoursThe school will endeavour to provide a range of such activities from time to time. These will sometimes include day and residential experiences, and are known generally as ‘optional extras’. Charges may be made for these activities EXCEPT where they are provided to fulfil any requirements specified in the syllabus of a prescribed public examination or are required in order to fulfil statutory duties relating to the National Curriculum or to Religious Education in which case they are not regarded as optional extras as such and charges cannot be made. (Board and lodging charges may still however be made for any residential activities subject to the remission arrangements described below). Parents will be notified in advance of any ‘optional extras’ which the school proposes to organise and the estimated cost. Parental consent will be obtained if their children are to participate in any activities for which a charge may be made. Any charge for a particular activity will be dependent upon the type of activity and its cost and the number of participants. This charge will not exceed the actual cost of providing the activity, divided equally by the number of pupils willing to participate. The cost of other pupils participating in the visit will not be included in the charge. The charge may however include an appropriate element for such things as: Any remission arrangements for such activities will be at the discretion of the Governing Body, EXCEPT in the circumstances described below:

Materials and IngredientsA charge will only be made for any materials and ingredients relating to activities taking place during school hours where parents have indicated in advance a wish to own the finished product, e.g. in home economics or CDT. Alternatively parents may, in these circumstances, be asked to volunteer to provide the ingredients and materials prior to the activity taking place. Remissions Where the parents of a pupil are in receipt of Income Support, Family Credit, an income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance a Disability Working Allowance, the Governing Body will remit in full the cost of board and lodging for any residential activity the school organises for the pupil if the activity: (i) takes place within school hours, or (ii) forms part of the syllabus for a prescribed

public examination or fulfils statutory duties relating to the National Curriculum or Religious Education, irrespective of whether the activity takes place within or outside school hours.

Any other remission arrangements for a particular activity or pupil will be entirely at the discretion of the School Governing Body. Any subsidy provided by the Governing Body will be met from the funds at its disposal. Voluntary Contributions Nothing in this policy statement precludes the School Governing Body from inviting parents to make voluntary contributions for the benefit of the school or in support of any school activity, whether during or outside school hours.
