THE BRIEF WAS TO DESIGN A BUNGALOW FOR A LOCAL ARTIST. THE ARTIST I CHOSE WAS A PAINTER WHO USES WALL AS HER MEDIA, INSTEAD OF CANVAS. I DESIGNED EACH SPACE WITH EMPTY WALLS AND DIFFERENT VIEWS OF THE OUTSIDE FROM WHICH SHE CAN DRAW INSPIRATIONS FROM. SINCE SHECONSTANTLY FACES “MENTAL BLOCK”, THE INABILITY TO PICK OUT AN IDEA, I FORMED MY CONCEPT “MISSING A THOUGHT IN A BLOATED MIND”. THIS RESULTED IN THE DYNAMIC FORM OF THE BUILDING, AS IF IT IS TRYING TO BREAK OUT OF ITS SKIN.
I MADE THIS FINAL MODEL USINGBALSA WOOD, A MATERIAL THAT IS EASY AND FAST TO CUT. I USED WHITE GLUE TO AVOID GLUE STAINS.

THE BRIEF WAS TO DESIGN A 10 STOREY RESIDENTIALDEVELOPMENT ALONG VICTORIA STREET FOR YOUNG URBAN PROFESSIONALS (YUPPIES). THE DISTRICT IS KNOWN AS THE ART DISTRICT AND THEBUILDINGS IN THE SITE AREGENERALLY OLD AND TALL, THUS BLOCKING VIEWS OF THESURROUNDINGS.
THE YUPPIES NEED A COMFORTABLE HOME IN SUCH A BUSY SETTING, WHERE THEY CAN DETACH THEMSELVES FROM THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE OF CITY LIFE. HENCE, THE DESIGN CONCEPT WAS TO CREATE A SANCTUARY.
THE DESIGN STRATEGIES INCLUDEINCORPORATING WATER FEATURES IN THE DEVELOPMENT, BOTH IN PUBLIC SPACES AND THE INDIVIDUAL UNITS. TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE OF FLEXIBLE LIVING, THE YUPPIES HAVE OPTIONS TO EITHER ISOLATE THEMSELVESWITHIN THEIR HOMES OR TO MINGLE WITH THEIR NEIGHBOURS IN THE COM-MUNAL AREA.

THE BRIEF WAS TO DESIGN A NEWSINGAPORE DESIGN AND CULTURALCENTRE ALONG THE GRANGE ANDSOMERSET ROAD, WHICH IS A PART OF THE WORLD-KNOWN ORCHARD ROADSHOPPING DISTRICT. SINGAPORE TOURISM BOARD ASPIRES TO
REINVIGORATE ORCHARD ROAD, TO MAKE IT A LIFESTYLE EPICENTRE WITH MORE DIVERSE OFFERINGS FOR BOTH LOCAL RESIDENTS AND FOREIGN VISITORS.

THIS DEVELOPMENT WOULD INCLUDE A THEATRE, DESIGN STUDIOS AND SPACES FOR COMMUNITY EVENTS ANDEXHIBITION. IT WOULD ALSO HOUSE THE FINGERPLAYERS, A LOCAL PUPPETRY-ORIENTED THEATRE COMPANY. THE DESIGN INTENTION WAS TO CONNECT SOMERSET 313 AND SCAPE PARK, WHILEEXPOSING THE USERS TO ART.

I LOVE TO DRAW AND HAVE ALWAYS BEEN EVER SINCE I STARTED READING MANGA. AND YES, I HAVE EXPERIMENTED AND PRACTICED MY MANGA DRAWINGS SKILL BY COPYING SCENES FROM THE MANGAS. I STUDIED THEIR DRAWINGS AND OVER THE YEARS, THESE ARE WHAT I PRODUCE.

I HAVE TO MENTION THAT I LOVE READING NOVELS, TOO. WHEN I READ THOSE BOOKS, I CAN PICTURE THE SCENES IN MY HEAD VIVIDLY. I HAVE TROUBLE DRAWING THOSE PICTURES OUT AND ALL I CAN MANAGE IS TO DRAW THE CHARACTERS FROM THE DETAILS THAT THE AUTHORS PROVIDE. THESE ARE OF LYANNA STARK, A CHARACTER OUT OF ‘A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE’ SERIES BY GEORGE R.R MARTIN. SHE IS ONE OF THE CHARACTERS THAT I LOVE THE MOST (ALTHOUGH I LOVE EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE FROM HIS BOOKS). IN THE BOOKS, SHE WAS A STRONG WOMAN WITH A TRAGIC LOVE STORY. I RESPECT THAT OF HER AND THAT WAS WHY I DREW THIS.

I STARTED WATER COLOURING NOT TOO LONG AGO AND I’M STILL LEARNING. AND THESE ARE THE WORKS THAT I DID WHILE PLAYING WITH THE BRUSHES AND THE COLOURS.
I WAS BROWSING PINTEREST AND I SAW MANY POSTS OF WATER COLOR PAINT-INGS OF BIRDS AND FEATHERS. SO I ATTEMPTED DRAWING AND PAINTING MY VERSION OF A BIRD PERCHED ON A BRANCH.

BUTTERFLY HAS COME TO MY MINDOFTEN OF LATE. I GUESS IT ALL STARTED WHEN A BUTTERLY WONDERED INTO MY LIVING ROOM ONE NIGHT, A FEW MONTHS AGO. I WAS AWED BUT WAS ALSO STARTLED WHEN IT FLEW CLOSER TO THE CEILING FAN. I DID NOT WANT IT TO GET CAUGHT IN THE FAN BLADES SO I SWITCHED IT OFF. I GUESS THE BUTTERFLY WONDERED AROUND THE HOUSE THE REST OF THE NIGHT.

WHEN I STARTED PAINTINGDISEMBODIMENT, I HAD ADIFFERENT INTENTION IN MIND. I WANTED TO DRAW A ROSE WITHBUTTERFLIES IN IT, AS IF THEBUTTERFLIES COMPOSED THE ROSEITSELF. BUT SOMEHOW THE BLACK ROSE RESEMBLES MORE OF A GIANT BLACK BUTTERFLY, MADE OF TINY PURPLE BUTTERFLIES.

PATTERNS IN DIAMONDS
I THOUGHT OF THESE DIAMONDSBECAUSE I DID TRIANGLE PATTERNS ON THE FACADE WALL FOR MY FINAL YEAR PROJECT. I FILLED UP SOME OF THE DIAMONDS WITH THE TRIANGLES WHILE THE REST OF THEM WITH RANDOMPATTERNS. EVERY DIAMOND ISDIFFERENT.
MEANWHILE,‘RAINING OF COLOURS’ IS A COMBINATION OF MY LOVES FOR THESE PASTEL COLOURS AND FOR MANGA DRAWINGS.
