Degree: ASSocIATe of ScIence

With a degree in Criminal Justice, you’ll be prepared for a challenging career keeping

your community safe and helping others. Through courses in sociology, psychology,

government and law, you’ll learn how to serve as an advocate, counselor, probation

officer, or criminal investigator. After completing an associate of science degree at

Ivy Tech Community College, you may also choose to pursue a bachelor of science

degree in Criminal Justice or Criminology at a four-year institution.

correctionsVigorous law enforcement and stringent sentencing rules have led to an increase in the incarcerated

population and the number of cases going to trial. In addition, the number of people on probation

and parole is increasing as courts seek alternatives to imprisonment. If you have good judgment

and the ability to resolve and manage conflict, you may be an excellent candidate for a career in the

growing corrections field. As a corrections professional, you may be employed in a court, prison, or

detention facility, where you may monitor the activities of prisoners, enforce rules, maintain order,

and search correctional facilities and prisoners for contraband. Strong written and verbal

communication skills, physical fitness, and familiarity with computers are helpful in preparing for

these careers.

law enforcementAs society becomes increasingly security-conscious, the demand for law enforcement professionals

continues to grow. A career in this challenging field allows you to serve your city, town, state, or

federal government, or work for a school, corporate, or transit organization. Law enforcement

professionals are involved in a diverse number of activities, including direct involvement in the

investigation and apprehension of criminals and testifying in court. Because of the high degree of

responsibility demanded of law enforcement professionals, honesty, sound judgment, integrity, and

physical fitness are required of everyone in the field, along with knowledge of sociology, psychology,

government, and law.

youth servicesHelping young people reach their potential is a primary goal of youth services professionals. In this

challenging, rewarding field, you will help young people and their families navigate the judicial

and correctional system, monitor the progress of youth offenders, and prevent youth offenders

from committing crimes by educating them about the causes and consequences of illegal behavior.

As a youth services professional, you will work closely with law enforcement, courts, and probation

services and as a liaison with community agencies. Strong written and verbal communication skills,

an ability to work with diverse populations, and computer knowledge are helpful in preparing for

this career.
