It is with great pleasure that I present this report that covers the teaching, research and service activities of New Zealand’s National School of Pharmacy for the period of 2009-2010. The School continues to grow in terms of all three activities. Perhaps the greatest change to the School over the last two years has been the completion of Professor Ian Tucker’s term as Dean of the School. Professor Tucker, the School’s second Dean, has led the School over the last 11 years and has contributed in many diverse ways to the benefit of both the School and the wider pharmacy community in New Zealand. During this time Professor Tucker maintained a highly active research group and now returns to his role as Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences. The School warmly thanks Professor Tucker for his leadership and personal sacrifice. In June 2010, I took over the role as Dean and found the School in very good shape. The School continues its three areas of teaching, research and service strength, which are the pharmaceutical sciences, clinical pharmacy and social pharmacy and is currently developing a fourth area of biopharmaceutical sciences.
The School strives to provide the best possible pharmacy education. We have a strong belief in providing education that is underpinned by high quality research and we believe that the School’s success in research directly underpins and enhances its teaching programmes. The Undergraduate Programmes is led by Associate Professor Natalie Medlicott and during Associate Professor Medlicott’s Research and Study Leave by Professor Pauline Norris. The Postgraduate Professional Programmes is led by Professor Stephen Duffull.
The School has seen an increase in enrolments in both its undergraduate and postgraduate taught programmes of study. This growth for the undergraduate programmes is subsequent to the School developing close liaisons with Malaysia through a scholarship network and through the International Medical University of Malaysia. Through these links we now have a steady intake of international students which increases the cultural diversity of our undergraduate programmes. Many of these international students will complete their intern training year in Malaysia. The postgraduate programmes in clinical pharmacy have developed and refined themselves over the last few years. We have seen a pleasing increase in numbers of students with now over 40 students enrolled in the postgraduate professional programmes. In addition the School is pleased to announce that shortly we will be introducing Australasia’s first postgraduate taught course in Social Pharmacy {PGCertPharm(Soc)}. This has been developed under the leadership of Professor Pauline Norris, our first Professor of Social Pharmacy.
The School’s research has gone from strength to strength in the last two years. Research is well supported in the School by the Research Committee which is chaired by Professor Thomas Rades. The Research Committee provides the necessary mechanism for support and infrastructure that helps to underpin our research needs. The School has a vibrant research culture as is reiterated in Professor Rades’ report (see Research in the School). In 2010 we celebrated Professor Thomas Rades’ achievement of authoring more than 200 papers published in internationally peer-reviewed Journals.
4
In the last two years we have seen our staff change and numbers grow. We now have two new Associate Professor positions; Associate Professor Sarah Hook (Pharmaceutical Sciences) and Associate Professor Natalie Medlicott (Clinical Pharmacy). We also have made a new appointment in the clinical pharmacy area. The School currently has 13 staff with annual practicing certificates. Also, and importantly, the School’s staff embrace a wide range of disciplines outside of pharmacy including, anthropology, chemistry, engineering, history, immunology, psychology, sociology, zoology (alphabetical). The combination of these disciplines provides an excellent melting pot of new ideas and approaches to research and teaching.
In 2009 the School underwent an accreditation review from the Australian Pharmacy Council. The results of this review were positive and the School is now fully accredited for five years.
This report provides an overview of the staff, research activities, teaching programmes and service activities of its staff members. We are proud of our staff ’s achievements and hope you enjoy reading about them.

Responsibilities within the School are allocated on a functional basis among Associate Deans for Admissions and Undergraduate Programmes, Postgraduate Professional Programmes and Research.
The activities of the School are informed by our stakeholders through the Pharmacy Advisory Committee and Heads of Schools and Professional Organisations in Pharmacy (HOSPOP) which have representatives from the various professional bodies, industry, students and staff; the staff/student liaison meetings whereby students can provide feedback through the class representative system; and the staff General Assembly which is one avenue by which staff provide input into the functions of the School.

research interestsMy research aims to improve drug therapy through appropriate formulation and delivery of medicines. It combines physical and biological sciences to optimally formulate drugs for human and veterinary uses. I am interested in fundamental understanding of formulations and their behavior in the biological environment and the mechanisms by which bioactives cross, or are prevented from crossing, biological membranes (e.g. blood brain barrier, blood milk barrier).
Specific projects:• Delivery of drugs to the brain via the blood brain barrier and
the potential use of novel bile salts and nano-delivery systems• Optimal delivery of drugs for the treatment/prevention of
mastitis in dairy cattle and the role of the blood milk barrier• Polymeric matrix delivery systems and their changes on
thermal treatment• Nano-systems for delivery of peptides via the oral route

rESEarch IN ThE School
Although the years 2007/8 saw unprecedented increase in research activity and quality in our School, in the last School of Pharmacy Report (2007 and 2008) I concluded that we were expecting a further significant increase in the research outputs of our academic staff members in the future. Today, I am happy to report that this expectation has indeed been fulfilled. The years 2009/10 have been the most successful for research in the School’s history!
All academic staff members are actively participating in pharmaceutical research. The strong research ethos in the School of Pharmacy has further strengthened our position as a leading research and teaching institution that uses its research to provide and underpin excellence in teaching and learning. The key indicators for success in research over the last two years are:
• an increased number of papers and conference contributions published from staff members of the School;
• an increased number of PhD students involved in research;
• an increased amount of grant money obtained by members of the School;
The School has maintained its role as the leading pharmaceutical research organisation in the country with strong leadership in the areas of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Clinical Pharmacy and Social Pharmacy.
A total number of 161 publications in international peer reviewed journals (up from 146 in the last reporting period) and 221 conference contributions at international and national conferences (up from 212 in the last reporting period) have been produced by our staff. Moreover, publications have once again been in the leading journals, such as Journal of Controlled Release, Molecular Pharmaceutics, Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, European Journal of Pharmaceutics and Biopharmaceutics, International Journal of Pharmaceutics and other high impact journals. 15 PhD students graduated in 2009/10. This number is up from 10 in the 2007/8 period. The years 2009/10 have also seen a further increase in postgraduate activity. The School now has 40 PhD students working in all areas of research strength in the School (up from 35 in the last reporting period). The quality of our postgraduate students also meant that the number of University scholarships won by our PhD students has further increased over the last two years. At the same time, the Research Committee of the School has maintained its own postgraduate scholarship programme and put in place many other measures to increase research quality and productivity of our postgraduate students. In 2006 the New Zealand government changed the regulations regarding study fees for international PhD students, enabling them to study at Otago at the domestic fee level. This positive development has created opportunities for students from many different countries to study at the School. At the same time, many of our PhD students also had the opportunity to spend extended periods of their PhD time at highly regarded international research institutions with which we have active collaborations.
49
These very encouraging developments were made possible through over $1.75 million that has been obtained by our staff from very competitive grants (up from $1 million in the last reporting period).
The strategic research goals for the School for the next reporting period are once again to continue to achieve research excellence, to encourage research-informed teaching and to further strengthen our international presence.
