1. Professional Development & Research Consultant (1 day per week) – Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women and Academic Partner (50% buyout with SDSU & Sharp HealthCare for 1 day per week) 2007 – Present. This role focuses on facilitating research and evidence-based practice in the clinical environment for women’s and newborn care, adult acute and intensive care, and rehabilitation services. As an on-site consultant, I help clinical and leadership staff conduct research and become published and I provide professional development sessions to teach staff about research and evidence-based practice.

2. Co-Editor Health Environments Research & Design Journal (HERD), 2006-Present. Founding co-editor of a new interdisciplinary peer reviewed journal which focuses on evidence-based healthcare design. The journal has an international audience and is the only journal of its kind in the healthcare and design industries.

3. Stichler Consulting Group, LLC, San Diego, CA 2005-2006 President & CEO and Senior Health Care Consultant. Directed the strategic business planning, operational improvement, and business/program development for healthcare clients. Contracted with NTDStichler Architects on select design projects to lead focus groups with clients, lead the evidence-based design process and review and critique architectural plans for healthcare facilities.

4. NTDStichler Architects (formerly Stichler Design Group), San Diego, CA 1993-2006 Principal, Senior Health Care Consultant. Reported to the President & CEO. Responsible for the Health Care Consulting Division of the company. Facilitated strategic planning, operational improvement and program development for hospitals and healthcare systems to maximize opportunities for quality improvement and growth in market share. Conducted feasibility analyses to determine the financial and organizational feasibility of adding new services, expand existing services, or coordinate/integrate services across a newly formed healthcare system. Consulted with the design team to ensure patient-focused, family-centered, and clinically efficient designs for health care design projects.

5. Sharp HealthCare, San Diego, CA 1990-1993 Corporate Vice President, Women’s Service-line: Reported to the Sr. Vice-President for System Integration and later to the Sr. Vice-President of Finance. Responsible for the business development and system integration of Women’s and Infant Services across 5 Sharp HealthCare hospitals. Facilitated strategic planning and evaluated opportunities to enhance operational efficiencies and profitability for the service-line. Consulted on the design, construction and operational planning of three Women’s Centers in the Sharp HealthCare system. Represented Sharp HealthCare for women’s issues at the state and national levels.

6. Sharp Memorial Hospital, San Diego, CA. 1980-1990 Executive Director of Women & Infant Services. Reported to the Chief Executive Officer. Responsible for the operations of a Level II State designated Regional Perinatal Program and Women’s Center. Responsibilities included the feasibility analysis, strategic business planning, design and project management of the new Mary Birch Hospital for Women, a project of 194,000 square feet and $65 million in total project costs.

Page 4 Participated in the capital campaign raising $15 million for the new Women’s Hospital. Directed the efforts to implement the Roy Adaptation Nursing Model and a shared governance organizational structure. Responsible for 525 staff, $55 million annual operating budget, and 15 direct reports.

STAFF AND FIRST LEVEL MANAGEMENT POSITIONS

1. Tucson Medical Center, Tucson, AZ. 1972-1977 Head Nurse – Maternity and Gynecology Services. Provided first line management to approximately 150 staff members on a postpartum and post-operative Gynecology unit.

2. Kino Community Hospital, Tucson, AZ. 1978. Educational Coordinator. Provided orientation to new employees; mentored new graduate nurses; planned, presented or coordinated continuing education classes for nursing staff.

3. Pima County Health Department, Tucson, AZ. 1971. Public Health Nurse. Provided nursing services to 3 public health districts in Tucson; directed clinic activities for the Family Planning, Prenatal, and Children’s Clinics.

4. Veteran’s Administration Hospital, Tucson, AZ. 1970-1971. Clinical Nurse for the Respiratory Care Unit and Surgical Intensive Care Unit.

CONSULTANT ACTIVITIES – Over 150 consultations were conducted between 1992-2011. Only a few recent consultations are listed below. Others are available upon request.

1. Princeton University Medical Center – May 2010 to present – As a co-investigator on a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Grant, I provide approximately 10 hours per month of consultation for research design, implementation, and analysis of data for the Phase 2 & 3 of the study.

2. Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women - Current August 2007 – May 2008. Through a contract between Sharp HealthCare and San Diego State University Foundation, currently provide 16 hours per week of professional development and research consultation. Principal Investigator on a study approved by SDSU IRB and Sharp HealthCare IRB: Nursing Staff Knowledge, Attitudes, Practice, Perceived Barriers to Evidence-based Practice, Collaboration and the Professional Practice Environment. Results of this study are in manuscript development

3. Sharp Memorial Hospital – January – August 2007. Provided consultation to the interdisciplinary Magnet planning committee for professional development and research. Proposals are in process for two research studies that are in progress of committee review: The Effect of the Built Environment on Organizational Performance Metrics, Nursing Indicators and Satisfaction of Patients and Providers and The Effects of a Nurse Residency Program for New Graduates on Satisfaction and Retention.

4. Center for Health Design, Concord, CA, 2006-2007. Consulted with an interdisciplinary team to create a standardized accrediting examination for evidence-based design. Led the efforts to create the construct development (for the research and evidence-based design section), item writing, and psychometric testing of the new examination.

5. Banner Healthcare System – Phoenix, AZ. Consulted on a planning team to create an innovative care delivery model for the health care system.

determine their healthcare needs by life stages and to recommend clinical programs to meet their needs. Facilitated the development of a space program for a new inpatient women’s center.

7. Morton Plant Mease, Clearwater, FL – 2006-2007. Led focus groups of physicians, nurses, and executive to develop a strategic business plan and integration plan for women and children’s services at Morton Plant’s Susan B. Walker Women’s Hospital and Mease Countryside Hospital.

8. Senior Health Care Consultant – NTDStichler and Stichler Consulting Group, San Diego, CA. – 1993-2006. Consulted with 75 hospitals in the US and 3 international hospitals in Sydney and Melbourne, Australia and Seoul, South Korea.
