Programme Overview The New Zealand Diploma in Youth Work (Level 6) aims to develop competent youth practitioners who will enter the youth work profession or the youth development sector. It provides training and education to ensure graduates meet the established industry competency standards for youth work. Programme Length Two years full time Programme Dates Trimester 1: 01 March–25 June

Trimester 2: 12 July 05 November Hours on Campus 9:00am-3:30pm Learning Mode This programme is delivered by blended learning i.e. face to face and online

learning. This means some of your lessons may be delivered via Moodle (our online learning platform), which will require you to have a computer and internet access at home. Students will also need to be able to study from home should Covid-19 Alert Levels change.

Self-directed Study Approximately two hours each day Programme Fees

This programme is free under the Targeted Training and Apprenticeship Fund (TTAF). This fund covers fees only; any additional course related costs are not included. Free fees apply to domestic students only.

Full details on course related requirements and costs will be available on the programme webpage from October. Laptop/tablet/internet: Prices vary Supervision: Students are required to complete a minimum of 13

hours of professional supervision over the course of the programme. This is organised and funded by the student ($50-$120 per hour).

Theory The six key themes covered over the courses are: • Treaty partnerships • Positive youth development • Youth participation • Reflective practice • Evidence-based practice • The development of a philosophy of professional practice

Workplace Practice The practical work-based components of the programme prepare students for work as youth practitioners who integrate positive youth development principles into their practice. The minimum hours for workplace practice for this programme are: • 75 hours at Level 5

Student Support At Weltec we are committed to our students' success and therefore offer a range of services to meet the learning needs of individual students. These include Learning Support Services which are delivered by professional staff in individual, group, class and distance modes on a variety of topics, and online material are available. To increase our students' chances of success, we provide support for our students in other ways such as financial advice, counselling, childcare facilities, and a service for students who have a disability, illness, or health problems that may interfere with their studies. Māori and Pacific Engagement Advisors are available to provide pastoral care for Māori and Pacific students, and information on alternative support networks and grants.

Credit Recognition If you have relevant skills and knowledge through study or experiences in work or other activities, you may be able to receive credit for them when enrolling in a programme of study. This is done through a process called credit recognition. Credit recognition may not exceed two-thirds of your chosen programme. If you think you may qualify for credit recognition, please contact one of our Enrolment Advisors. Information (including the Credit Recognition Application form and fees information) is also available on our website under enrolment information. We recommend applying for credit recognition well before your programme starts.

Foundation Studies Weltec offers a choice of programmes to assist you to gain skills and knowledge in preparation for a variety of education or employment pathways. Programmes are offered at different levels, to provide you with a pathway suitable to your background, and are offered at different campuses, so you can study closer to home. Within the programmes, different strands are also available to support you to go onto further education or employment in a specific field.

Entry Requirements Applicants must meet both the academic and suitability entry requirements. This programme can be studied both part time and full time but must be completed within five years. Academic Entry Requirements NCEA Level 3 or New Zealand Certificate in Study and Career Preparation (Level 3) or equivalent qualification/work experience.

International: Academic IELTS 6.0 (no band lower than 5.5), or equivalent. Suitability Requirements: Applicants must be able to demonstrate the following qualities: • Effective interpersonal communication skills • Understanding of, and capability to, work in the professional health and Counselling and Addictions

sector • Commitment and motivation to succeed Suitability will also be assessed with reference to the applicant’s health/Wellbeing, safety check* and referee reports. *Safety Check: with the introduction of the Children’s Act (2014), all NZ Diploma in Youth Work students, who may work with children during the course of their study, must be safety checked. Safety checking includes reference checking, work history, identity check, police vet and an overall assessment of the applicant’s safety to work with children.
