Lehman Urban Transformative Education (LUTE) Award The award seeks nominations from faculty members within the School of Education to acknowledge the work of educa-tors who make outstanding contributions to urban educa-tion. This award also seeks to identify and publicly recognize “competent educators dedicated to promoting justice, equity, and caring in urban schools,” one of the core principles of the LUTE framework.

Chi Sigma lota International Counseling Honor Society Chi Sigma lota is the International Counseling Academic and Professional Honor Society for counselors-in-training, coun-selor educators, and professional counselors. Its mission is to promote scholarship, research, professionalism, leadership and excellence in counseling, and to recognize high attainment in the pursuit of academic and clinical excellence in the field of counseling. Members of the Society distinguish themselves through exemplary scholarship and professional excellence.

Professor Ronald Ellis Award in Science Educationis awarded to a graduate science education student who has demonstrated excellence in the art of teaching and learning science, and researching the field of science education, in both

formal and informal learning environments. Awardees are recognized for their potential to greatly and enthusiastically contribute professionally to the field of science education.

Excellence In Student Teaching Award

The Excellence in Student Teaching Award recognizes one outstanding School of Education student teacher from each of the following departments: Early Childhood and Child-hood Education; Middle and High School Education; and Counseling, Leadership, Literacy, and Special Education. The Office of Field Experiences and the Professional Development Network invited college supervisors and cooperating teach-ers to nominate student teachers they supervised during the 2016-2017 academic year who demonstrated an exemplary commitment to and competency for teaching, collaboration, and building relationships in their host school community.

Noyce ScholarsThe STEMELL Noyce Scholarship program is a partnership of the School of Education, the School of Natural and Social Sciences and School District 11 in the Bronx. The program, funded by the National Science Foundation and named for Robert Noyce, the founder of Intel, will prepare young, ener-getic mathematics and science teachers of tomorrow.

Awards

Lehman College and the School of Education Lehman College is the City University of New York’s senior public college in the Bronx with a distinguished 49-year history serving diverse students. Since its inception, as a senior college in 1968, Lehman College has graduated over 6000 students with undergraduate and graduate degrees in education and counseling. Graduates of Lehman College’s educator prepara-tion programs are teachers, principals, counselors, and school leaders in the Bronx and across the other 4 boroughs, the city of Yonkers, Westchester County, New York State and the country.

The faculty of the School of Education began collaborative articulation of the Lehman Urban Transformative Education (LUTE) framework in 1999. The document was recently updated. LUTE programs are founded on themes of:

• realizing potential • educating for equity

• affirming diversity • empowering learners.

Tonight’s honors reception celebrates the accomplishments of students and alumni who meet LUTE standards of excellence.
