Introduction from the Dean“Education is not a preparation for life; education is life itself.” (John Dewey)

Teaching is more than a job, it’s also a calling. Teaching means more than passing along information; it is also centered in helping students to think and to apply. Teaching involves more than minds; it also means shaping character, heart and citizenship. These are the hallmarks of our Northwest University School of Education

programs. We seek to train learner-focused, adaptive and holistic teachers using research-based approaches and data-driven outcomes.

The Master of Education (MEd) is for experienced teachers, who are seeking new professional knowledge and refined practice to lead and positively impact student

learning. The Master in Teaching (MIT) is for college graduates who have decided they want to enter this dynamic profession. You will learn from experienced NU professors and master-practitioners who are currently teaching in both private and public P-12 schools.

“I was shooting for a program that could get me done in a year, really. I was eager to get into the classroom.”

Why Northwest?I started looking around for what the options were for schools who offered a graduate level program that would certify a teacher who had an undergraduate background already, and essentially Northwest met all that criteria.

Experience at NorthwestThe teaching staff at Northwest was great.

I like the fact that they had all worked, not just in a collegiate environment, but mostly in secondary or elementary schools with elementary aged kids. I developed relationships with professors; they took an interest in me and invested in me.

AdviceNorthwest University is truly gearing

students to become business leaders. So if you’re ready to take a step forward, then believe in yourself, believe in your dreams, believe in God, and just go for it. To watch Rod’s complete interview please visit northwestu.edu/video.

Brittani BrownMIT, Class of 2010

“They really backed me on my passion... and I really

appreciated that.”

Why Northwest?A mentor told me to go to the university

that would challenge me the most spiritually and academically and I thought Northwest would be able to do that, so that’s why I chose it for my undergrad degree. While in my undergrad degree, I learned more about the Masters in Teaching program and decided to pursue it.

Experience at NorthwestI always felt that my professors supported

me personally as well as academically. In the teaching arena, I felt like they really backed me on my passion with TESL (Teaching English in a Second Language), and I really appreciated that. Advice

To someone who is thinking about doing the program I would ask them to really

think about their investment. The MIT program, the eleven-month program, is a great investment, but you do have to put your whole self into it and be okay with that. I think it’s totally worth it, and I would tell them to do it.

Our History Our Location Our ProgramsNorthwest University was founded in

1934. It grew from a three-year to a four-year academic curriculum in 1948, and a Liberal Arts division was added in 1955. In 1973 Northwest gained regional academic accreditation and on January 1, 2005 we attained university status. Though we’ve changed over the years, our mission has remained constant: to create a learning community dedicated to spiritual vitality and academic excellence.

The 45,000-square-foot Donald H. Argue Health and Sciences Center is the latest addition to the campus (below).

Northwest University is located on 56 beautiful acres in Kirkland, Washington. We’re just a few blocks from Lake Washington and a few miles from the shops, galleries, and restaurants of downtown Seattle. Snowboarding, hiking, biking, and other recreational opportunities surround us. We’re also close to some of the world’s finest potential employers, such as Microsoft, Amazon, Nordstrom, Starbucks, and Boeing.
