CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

• INTRODUCTION TO SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE IN KARAKORUM UNIVERSITY GILGIT.

Cities are an essential part of human life and provide human living in an atmosphere most appropriate for further developments of whole society. On the other hand, if the cities are not properly managed they can harm the human instead of providing benefit. For making this purpose, the idea of a sustainable city is quite interesting. For making the cities sustainable, certain skills and resources are required. One way of achieving this objective is to train humans by establishing institute that imparts such knowledge. Sustainable cities not only address the needs of humans but also consider and acknowledge the values and other human aspects as well. In order to address the values and certain characteristic of a society and to promote the human talent, institutes like a school of art and architecture play a key role. Gilgit , In order to promote the education and literacy in a sustainable way, the school of ART and ARCHITECTURE is the place that depicts the true senses of nature of art and architecture identities of a region. Architecture is the discipline that develops the true sense of belonging and reflects the image of a civilization. The establishment of such as school will address and polish the skills of young generation of Gilgit baltistan.

The dialogue between solid and voids, or the play of different material, colors and textures on one another are impartment elements in creating institutional space. This becomes a challenge for the designer and it has pushed me to explore these domains

Architecture is what nature cannot make. Architecture is something unnatural but not something made up.

• ART INSTITUTE It is common opinion that artists are borne and not made , that there is no need of any formal education for this but it’s not true ,raw talent may get you at some place but in wide world of art ,you are more likely to succeed if you learn from those who have gone before you it’s not like you are committing to doing anything the way everyone else does it you are just learning how they do it so you can incorporate those implements ,techniques , and perspective you find most useful in to the style that best suit you personally . After all, even Picasso went to school and learn to paint in the established tradition of the time before taking his tools pursing his own direction . So, there is need of an art institute in society for many reason:Its fact that ability or inborn talent is not sufficient for success in this field ,there is need of good quality institute to enhance their skill ,A quality institute with professional faculty and strong artists environment will provide an opportunity for intense skill and concept development Art institute also help them to know how to work in practical field, because for living their always need a training and mostly artists work, other than their passion also their source of income .so they must have formal education to make their careers. An art institute serves as a important link between student and market place.

It will also help them to learn advance artistic techniques while exploring multiple formats, which will allow you to expend their knowledge base and help them to chose an area of focus that suits their talent, They can then chose from a wide variety of careers related to the arts, both in the teaching field and within the art world itself.

In each field art ,there is a constant change of style and also new techniques are introduce constantly ,so art institute help in updating students about latest trends.

2.2HISTORY OF ARTS INSTITUTE:

Page 9: school of architecture case study

During the Renaissance formal training took place in art studios.Historically, design has had some precedence over the fine arts with school of design being established all over Europe in the 18th century. Education in art takes place across the life-span.Childern,youth and adults learn about art in community based institutions and organizations such as museums ,local art agencies ,recreation centers, places of worships social services agencies, and prisons among many other possible venues .with in the art school s ;visual arts education; encompasses all the visual and performing arts delivered in a standard based ,sequential approach by qualified instructor as a part of core curriculum , its core is the study of inseparable artistic and aesthetic experience and learning

Architecture is the art of building in which human requirements and construction materials are related so as to furnish practical use as well as an aesthetic solution. As an art, architecture is essentially abstract and non-representational and involves the manipulation of the relationships of spaces, volumes, planes, masses and voids. Time is also an important factor in architecture, since a building is usually comprehended in a succession of experiences rather than all at once. In most architecture there is no one vantage point from which the whole structure can be understood. The use of light and shadow, as well as surface decoration, can greatly enhance a structure.

More than being merely shelter, architecture is also the physical record of human activity and aspiration. The analysis of building types provides an insight into past cultures and eras. Architecture constantly touches shapes our behavior and conditions our psychological mood. It engages all our senses to shape our perception and enjoyment of our built environment and then it also happens as vice versa.

Architecture is an art and science of built environment has also been engaged with the social issues since the beginning of the civilization. Architecture is concerned with the whole process of evolving a habitat and not just buildings. In other words the scope of architecture is not restricted to provision of shelter of individuals but incorporates entire range of shelters for family,

neighborhoods, community, society and humanity at large. At the same time public buildings have also much influence on the human society and behavior. Architecture is not merely a visual art; it includes humanities, sciences, technologies, arts and crafts. Therefore, architectural education has to respond to this multi-disciplinary approach to address the issues confronting a society in particular and humanity in general.

“The purpose of architecture is to generate something new, to solve problems in a way that is unique to that problem, whether it is art, social action, or something else. Innovation implies change, and change implies improvement” Preiser, vischer and white, 1999

2.5 TYPE OF ARCHITECTURE SCHOOLS:The school of architecture has prospective part in the formation of an architect of the future . we must believe that it is not only a part of work to give our students a technique which shall be useful and salable, but we must also strive to make them fit to apprehend a new vastly wider responsibility that has hitherto characterized the architect. The architecture school institution boadly speaking can be divided in two categories.

• Conceptual school essentially give precedence to basic design concept, creativity and aesthetic.

• Where as the technical school believe in Louis Sullivan philosophy of: form fallows function” and the tents of Bauhaus and Chicago school “ which were practical approach in design and functionality .Massachusetts institute of technology is an example of technical school.Source(thesis report cead mehran university manan mammon)In Pakistan national school of arts in Lahore can be classified as a conceptual school with emphasizes on creative thinking and “dream concept”

The mother art is architecture. Without architecture of our own we have no soul of our own civilization.

BACK GROUND AND HISTORY OF ARCHITECTURE SCHOOL:

• 2.6HISTORICAL DEVOLPMENT:

In mid of 1500s, building designer were called architects, these architects took apprentices to teach in exchange for there labors.

The academy of architecture was founded in 1671 in Paris,France which later turn in to Ecole des beaux Arts.

The academy teaching method evolved studio culture:

Long houses, intense competition, the schematic design focus the absence of users, the relative disregard how things get built, emphasis on the development of prototypical solutions”.

This system of Ecole des beaux Arts was all over Europe and in some part of America .As the system was contradicting with architectural practice in Britain, architectural association was founded in London in 1847

In 1919,walter Gropius founded a school named as Bauhaus ,the aim was to integrate art ,economics and element of arts .In 1927 ,the architecture department was included in curriculum In America architects took their training as apprentices in the offices of self thought architect.henry cob,s(1985)research said that university based school of architecture is an American invention .following the same system in Europe (Beaux arts model)

In 1868 MIT introduced architecture in their curriculum ,which later fallowed Bauhaus model including engineering and history .University of Pennsylvania began a program in architecture in 1890.where architecture was taught as form of arts In 1903 Beaux arts system was introduce to penn department of architecture Later different architecture schools were included in university system

2.7THE TRANSFORMATIONS IN ARCHITECTURAL EDUCATION

Page 14: school of architecture case study

Architecture education is always in transitional mode as during different phases different aspect is highlighted. In constant development road the education has shifted from static to dynamic forms, from planes and solid geometry to morphogenesis, from classical proportion and order to different complex experimentations. There is no fixed dimension in architecture, therefore, the changes in architecture education is always in motion. Different mood of expression through computer modeling have changed the whole working environment of an architect and the students.

The current virtual world has shifted the focus from certain fixed rules to infinity, which allowed the students to draw and design in their own world without the feel of gravity. As the students can model whatever they want they are moving away from the real world where architecture is nothing personal but it is combination of user ,possibility economy ,culture and context .The design that students create are not designs of spaces intended to frame social life ,these are narratives and messages pushed by evocate imaginary (Schumacher 2012)

Different meetings and conference held in order to make some changes in the system of architectural education .The Boyer report is among them ,in the Boyer report 1996 ,it was argued that the education should be more flexible ,and integrated curriculum ,but if it failed to produce change .The report also failed to anticipate the magnitude and intellectual consequence of digital technology (Nasar 2007)

2.8 RELEVANCE OF ART, ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN TO SOCIETY:

Society is derived from the Latin word societies meaning fellowship, thus, the derived word stands for the collective activities living style of a group of people with a separate and distinguishable culture, traditions and norms.

Art, design and architecture are the reflection of the human nature of mind which allows the society to understand the cultural continuity (regionalism in modernity) and social relevance (issue of poverty, technology or materials).

Art, architecture and design respond to the society’s needs in a manner that translate, transform and understand the responses of the individuals to shape their physical and mental world. The primary responsibility of design and architecture is to articulate aesthetics, and provides working

Page 15: school of architecture case study

solutions in tune with the people; solutions which helps them to find themselves and define their identity. It must provide a physical interpretation of that which is best in a contemporary society.

The role of architecture is as a structuring of space that that reflects our interactions with the exterior world and the inner world. 1

2.9 THE CONCEPT OF ART AND ARCHITECTURE SCHOOL IN WEST:

Processing aptitude and basic skill suited to art and architecture, and who are responsive to the need and The concept of school is to produce young people who are motivated and committed to learning, sensibilities of the human society about them. It combines instruction with experimentation, information with enquiry, discussion with research, so as to develop learning and deepen understanding. It attempts to train artists, designer and architects who are highly sensitive to society and skills demanded of their profession.

The concept of school is to offer an interdependent study program that supports the concept of art and men, science as discovery, which together to leads to use and development of appropriate technologies to meet the challenges of the dynamic 21st century global society. The school aims to educate and train students to obtain a broader vision in the profession of architecture and design, and also to promote research and the development of applied technologies in art and disciplines. The school also focuses on rendering technical services of design, consultation, advisory management and training to serve government development and private sectors. 21Herbert read, “Education through Art” 2Thesis report by AGHA HANEE MUSTAFA “Department of art and architecture and design for Karachi University – Pakistan”

2.10ROLE OF AN ARTIST, DESIGNER & ARCHITECT IN A SOCIETY:

Every structure and object around an individual’s is all products of artistic skill. So whether he is called an architect, graphic design, artist, sculptor or painter, his importance stays significantly the same, but not necessarily his appreciation, unfortunately. Why is that? Perhaps it is due to the difference in art forms resulting in different perceptions for the observer.

2.11THE ROLE OF AN ARCHITECT:

The architect role in the society has changed over time. The architect has the dual social responsibilities to educate society and be educated by society. For the betterment of life and its living, the role of the architect must be recognized. An architect is not only needed for building a house but also for what surrounds the house, the city in other words- the environment. One’s environment needs to be planned and organized. It has to be sustainable for future generations. The architect’s role is to understand the physical manifestation of culture, social, economic, climate and geographical factors and provide solutions keeping in mind the socio-economic aspects of the society. 2

• 3.21CASE STUDY CONCLUSIONS: As selecting the NCA as a role model, case study concludes that design may be based on proportioning system.

• Courtyards and semi covered spaces should be used as socially interactive space. • NCA departments don’t offer enough terraces or there are some they are not easily accessible for

students, terraces should be a part of design to cater the students gathering individually for each department.

• Trees and plants should be used in courtyard because there shadows will define the events and activities, and also to create a visual relation to nature or outside environment.

• Just the two departments of fine arts are connected through bridge; bridges should be a major part of design, which will act as a transitional space between two spaces, which can solve the issue of communication between two departments.

• Exposed stair should be preferred because of their sculptural appearance. • Master plan should offer multiple approaches and paths.

Umeå School of Architecture has a unique location by Umeå River. With its interior landscape of open floor levels and sculpturally shaped stairs, the building has a strong artistic expression. As a growth centre for future architecture, the main function of the building is to provide the framework for inspiration and innovation. From the outside, the building has a cubic expression with its larch facades and square windows placed in a vibrant, rhythmic sequence on all sides. The interior space of the building is designed as a dynamic sequence of stairs and split, open floor levels where abstract, white boxes hang freely from the ceiling filtering the light coming in through the high skylights.

One of the key objectives has been to create a bright and open study environment where everyone is part of the same room – only separated by the split levels and glass walls of the teaching rooms. This design supports the opportunities for mutual inspiration and the close exchange of knowledge and ideas.

In contrast to the dynamic atrium, the drawing rooms placed along the facades of the building in a strict and regular sequence of columns and beams have a simple and rational design. The varied pattern of windows not only creates a strong visual effect – it also generously lets the light flow into the building and offers a breathtaking view of the river.

The School of Architecture will form part of the new Arts Campus at Umeå University, which will also comprise the new Academy of Fine Arts and Art Museum – both designed by Henning Larsen Architects.

• 3.27.1Sustainability and materialsLocal, sustainable materials have been used for the School of Architecture. The exterior facing is larch wood and, on the inside, local birch wood creates a contrast to the light walls and contributes to achieving good acoustics. The concrete floor gives an industrial and robust

expression.

Early on in the design process, energy calculations and daylight simulations helped to establish that the facade should consist of wood with window holes instead of only glass. This has been a key parameter in achieving an energy reduction of 50 %.

Ventilation, lighting and heating functions are ingeniously integrated in the bearing structure. The air comes in under the floor and is transported to the roof of the building via the columns and beams where it is circulated round the building via perforated pipes.

CHAPTER NO: 044.1 Site location:

Page 36: school of architecture case study

Site is located at Karakorum international university gilgit4.2Accessibility:The site accessibility through all mean e.g by buses , private cars and so on. Accessible from main nomal road .the site is linked with the rest of city .airport is 10 to 15 minute distance from main campus there is bridge between kiu and airport gilgit. There four accessible points three ways linked with bridge and anther one is linked with nomal raod .one bridge linked with chinar baag , second bridge linked with danyor

4.3SITE SLECTION

SITE SLECTION CRITERIA

The site should fulfill the major and important ideal requirements of the projects .it should help the students in there working and should provide liberal and enormous space .it should provide a natural environment for working and relaxation, as architecture is a full time job the site should have effective link (either direct or indirect) with the city to understand its built environment ,need problem ,and its potential for the future approach of the architects .There are various factors, which need consideration while selection of site for purpose of designing .These factor determine the feasibility of the site. The school of art and architecture is design on the basis of following considerations.

Accessibility from different parts of the city to the site

For such academy like school of art and architecture where studios of different arts are there ,an atmosphere less affected by dust ,traffic ,noise and gasses is needed to study

To provide an opportunity to the students and faculty to be very close to nature and life.

For the students of arts a big and free land is needed for giving them full liberty to create new things and work easily.

Page 37: school of architecture case study

A school building like art and architecture academy is for the students of Pakistan

The overall environment of the area in which the site is present, should be such as to accommodate the school of art and architecture in itself.

4.4Criteria for selection of the site:

• Availability of all services

• Easily approach for student

• Located on educational belt of the city

• Infrastructure condition should developed

• Flow of traffic

• Non violent

Due to educational purpose, should be near or under approach of the students and educated persons.

The important infrastructure facilities should be available at the site such as electricity, drainage, telephone, water supply etc.

Page 38: school of architecture case study

PROPOSE SITE:

The propose site of project is “THE SCHOOL OF ART AND ARCHITECTURE” is Karakorum international university GILGIT BALTISTA N; it is very feasible site for the project because there is calm environment, no noise pollution.

4.5SITE LOCALITIES

ENVIROMENTAL FACTOR:

When architect is given a design assignment ,there are many environmental factors that are to be considered .the site has major factor that has to be considered .site mean the area or land that is meant for construction of the proposed project .site planning is the art and science of arranging the various portion of a particular piece of land according to their uses, The site planner decided on the use of the site in detail by selecting and analyzing it for the various characteristics of soil, slope vegetation etc.

The landscape involve the design of outside space .this should be thought about carefully to make an architectural design complete .The climate at the location at the site is very important as it effect the building that to be constructed .Services such as water supply, drainage, sanitation electricity, fire protection, air conditioned system etc. also have to be considered in order to make an architectural design complete.

Page 39: school of architecture case study

• 4.6IDENTIFICATION OF SITE AND ITS PREPERATION:

Each site has a unique nature of its own .The purpose for which it is to be used should be clearly understood .every site when disturbed takes time to experience the matual adjustment of its elements .For example , the flow of water create a drainage pattern .many factor are involved in analysis of the site .These include the factors above the ground ,below the ground and on the ground ,as discussed in following .

NATURAL FACTOR:

• Geology

• Topography

• Hydrology streams lakes ,swamps

• Soil classification of types and uses

• Vegetation

• Wild life

• Climate factor

• 5.6.1GEOLOGY:

The type of rock below the surface of soil, the depth and characteristic feature of rock should be identified .such rocks could be act as a foundation for many buildings. These are natural and could form visible land forms. The stability of such geological formation is also important .

Page 40: school of architecture case study

• 4.6.2TOPOGRAPHY:

The form of land is called topography .this is most important factor to be analyzed .geology and the slow process of natural erosion(soil being worn away because of wind or water) are responsible for land form and slopes. A topographic survey will reveal the badly drained areas and natural drainage channels. it will be also reveal place that have good views and parts of the site that are visible or hidden from any selected point out side the site .The slopes will decide the road and paths:a steep slope will increase building costs.

4.6.3HYDROGRAPHY:

Hydrography provides information about all types of water bodies present in and around the site: lakes ,streams, any marshy land (swamps), or natural wells. It also reveals the availability table and the depth at which it is available.

• 4.6.4SOIL:

The different types of soil present are analyzed .soil decides the stability of land, foundation, suitability ,excavation ,erosion ,drainage, and plant growth (as the tope soil is essential for plant growth). The bearing capacity of soil is an important factor to be considered while locating buildings.

4.6.5VEGETATION:

A study of vegetation helps in locating large existing trees, which can be retained .these can be used for providing seating . the ecology of area should also be examined to know what plants or shrubs would grow in that area.

4.6.6WILDLIFE:

This is an important consideration when choosing sites for parks and recreation. Fishing sites for parks and recreational activities . the selection of land suitable for such activities depends on natural wildlife present in the area .wildlife also adds from color and movement of landscape.

Page 41: school of architecture case study

• 5.6.7 CLIMATIC FACTORS:

Across a piece of land , the elevation difference ,character of topography ,vegetation cover, and water bodies influence of climate of that area. On the other hand precipitation and temperature are the major factor affecting vegetation.

4.6.7CLIMATE:

Gilgit experiences a cold desert climate. Weather conditions for Gilgit are dominated by its geographical location, a valley in a mountainous area, southwest of Karakoram Range. The prevalent season of Gilgit is winter, occupying the valley eight to nine months a year.

Gilgit lacks significant rainfall, averaging in 120 to 240 millimeter (4.7 to 9.4 in) annually, as monsoon breaks against the southern range of Himalayas. Irrigation for land cultivation is obtained from the rivers, abundant with melting snow water from higher altitudes.

The summer season is brief and hot. The piercing sunrays may raise the temperature up to 40 °C (104 °F), yet it is always cool in the shade. As a result of this extremity in the weather, landslides and avalanches are frequent in the area.

4.7CULTURAL FACTOR:

• Existing land use –ownership of adjacent property and off-set nuience

• Linkage

• Traffic and transit –vernacular and pedestrian circulation on or adjacent to the site.

• Density and floor area ratio

• Utilities sanitation ,water ,gas, electricity ,strom water drainage

• Historical factors – historic buildings and landmarks.

4.8ANALYSIS OF SERVICES IN AND AROUND SITE:

SITE PLANNING:

The surrounding of there localities is that ,the north is purpose site is located, the jutial is located, east side danyor is located, west side sultan Abad is located.

• 4.9SITE PLANNING:

Site planning involves arranging structure on the land and shaping spaces between them. it is an art linked to architecture, and city planning. The site is plan locate object and activities in space. it may be concerned with a small cluster of houses, a single building and the surrounding space, or a small community built in a single operation.

4.10 ENVIROMENT OF GILGIT:

The environment is its boarder sense, cover all natural physical, chemical and human resources. The environment is usually define by ecologist as the conditioned and process affecting the life the development of human being.

Present use of site:

The site is vacant ,

4.11Site characteristics:

Page 45: school of architecture case study

• Site is flat and having no contours.

• There is no huge structure adjacent to the site , there fore no problem of ventilation and light

CONCLUSION:

In this study, reading the idea behind the design by concepts has been taken into consideration in the architecture design education. in the process of education which include theory and practice ,student have gain to look in another way to the architectural product with creativity and responsibility .they have learned the process of turning abstract in to concrete ,the idea behind an architectural product and to read this idea behind the design by concept and making a conceptualization study in design and architecture language .students also have developed their own sketching style to quickly represent their ideas with simple contour line avoiding all unnecessary details. This simplicity refers to the need to make the clearest possible statement which look like of the simplicity at the concepts. so they have to use quick sketches and basic concept which are enduring mechanism used by architectural designers to guide the entire process of design development .after these part of studios, student will learn other step of design ,deal with new problem by themselves ,working in an existing environment.
