“I found out I had a passion for art since a very young age, but I wasn’t always encouraged to express myself in that way. I got banned from drawing on several occasions by my middle school counselor, and I had to convince my dad to allow me take art courses in high school (and I excelled in them). I didn’t really know what I wanted to focus on until I discovered Academy of Art University. I was never fully sold on the idea of comic book illustration and writing and I hadn’t really looked too much into animation, but now I can’t imagine doing anything else.”

Nigerian-born Olowu is currently working on a web series, titled The Best of Us, about a young man who must start growing and becoming a better man with the help of a tight group of friends.

CHENG YI “LILY” WU 3D Animation student

“I have been passionate about film and animation since I was little, and I decided to devote myself to animation after I graduated from university. I was involved in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars TV series. As an animator, and after seven years of creating an animation TV series, I started reflecting on my position in life. Besides being an animator, I wanted to get back my passion for creating, and pass on my personal experiences in animation. This is why I decided to resign from my job and pursue a more well-rounded education in animation.”

““I want to continue using my imagination to create animation, and bring the knowledge I’m acquiring back to Taiwan and contribute to animation education there.

Academy of Art University fosters collaboration. This is manifested in StudioX.

ADVANTAGEOUS AT SUNDANCE In 2012, director Jennifer Phang brought her independently produced sci-fi film Advantageous to Catherine Tate and StudioX for VFX work incorporating CGI, matte painting, and compositing. Tate is the School of Animation & VFX Collaborative Project Lead and acted as senior VFX supervisor on Advantageous. Her passion is connecting with the indie film community to bring evocative and visually stunning projects into the school’s StudioX collaborative program. Advantageous was one of the largest and most complex projects StudioX has undertaken, but the team was rewarded with an official acceptance and screening at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival.

2K GAMES: BORDERLANDS The School of Animation & Visual Effects partnered with 2K Games and Gearbox to create the “Borderlands Cooperative.” Academy students were given the opportunity to create and produce several animated short films set in the Borderlands universe, using characters and props from the actual game asset library.

The multidisciplinary effort gave our students the chance to form teams and submit storyboards of their ideas to a professional panel of judges. The chosen storyboards and their teams were then taken into production as part of collaborative classes run by full-time faculty at the school.

The three completed shorts—titled Bride of Claptrap, The Darkest Day, and Loose Cannon Claptrap—garnered universal praise and expanded the anarchic world of Borderlands. The entire process, from the storyboarding competition through the premiere of the movies, is showcased as part of a feature-length documentary, titled The Art of the Game.

We are located in the San Francisco Bay Area, one of the capitals of the animation industry. Thanks to our location, we offer some of the most exciting industry experiences you will find at any school.

Real-World Partnerships

The School of Animation’s StudioX had the opportunity to work on visual effects for Beasts of the Southern Wild. Directed by Benh Zeitlin, the film was put together on a shoestring budget and went on to be recognized on the film festival circuit before being nominated for Best Picture at the 2013 Academy Awards.

“There’s a different kind of energy and a different kind of pressure involved in a real film production that’s good for learning,” says Collaboration Lead Catherine Tate. “You have to solve your problems, you have to finish the project. It’s going to be on the big screen. The team building, learning that working with other people helps you become better—that’s what being in the business is all about.”

The students in Tate’s Compositing and Production class placed giant aurochs in the same scene with the heroine, Hushpuppy. They added water to the bayou’s levee, mixing in

dead fish and garbage to show the effects of the hurricane.

Teams of compositors worked with production coordinators who, in Tate’s words, “make sure the pipeline stays full.” In the case of Beasts, the students worked through the holidays to ensure the film could open at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, where it was a sensation and captured the Grand Jury Prize for Drama.

Animation BFA graduate Ricardo Marmolejo was one of the VFX leads on the film and enjoyed the experience of interacting with his fellow classmates on this type of project, as well as with Zeitlin and one of the film’s producers.

“We were the means to which their vision came to life,” says Marmolejo. “So in the end, for me, learning about the whole process, the pipeline, understanding it, was just amazing. It was really, really valuable.”

As one of the top art schools in the country, Academy of Art University is recognized for graduating professionally ready talent across multiple creative disciplines.

2D ANIMATOR Create 2D images by either hand drawing each frame or digitally manipulating flat media for games, television, the Web, or feature films.

3D ANIMATOR Work with movement in computer graphic imagery—that is, characters or inanimate objects such as robots or cars—or with cameras for television, feature films, or games.

CHARACTER ANIMATOR Focus on the performance on screen as a character animator in traditional, 3D, or stop motion animation. An understanding of timing, movement of humans and animals, and acting is essential to bringing characters to life.

TECHNICAL DIRECTOR: DYNAMICSCreate natural phenomena, such as fire, water, and explosions, using dynamic simulation software as a dynamics technical director (also known as an FX artist). Integrate these computer-generated elements into an animated scene or seamlessly add them to live action footage as a cheaper and safer way to get an “impossible” effect.

MODELER Build objects for manipulation in a 3D environment. These could be models of characters both cartoon and realistic, natural shapes like animals and plants, or solid objects like buildings and cars. Models must be built to measure so that they can be moved, painted, and lit properly for use in CG imagery.

PRODUCER Stand at the apex of the production pyramid and ensure a director’s creative vision is realized by assembling a strong crew of collaborators. Manage all aspects of the production process, including championing the creative players, maintaining the financials and schedule, influencing technological innovations, and overseeing the administrative processes.

STOP MOTION ARTIST Create a performance, with frame-by-frame manipulation, using posable puppets that can be used in television, film, and advertising.

RIGGER Use computer programs to form skeletons by creating a series of bones that deform and animate specific parts of the character.

STORYBOARD ARTIST Take the printed word and translate it into cinematic images by drawing people, buildings, costumes, vehicles, guns, horses, spaceships—all executed quickly with attention to draftsmanship and perspective. Provide the first look at what the final film or video game might look like as you set yourself on a path toward directing.

TECHNICAL DIRECTOR: COMPOSITING Use digital software to take separately created elements and combine them into one seamless image. Judge color, lens effects, film artifacts, atmospheric effects, scale, perspective, and parallax. Match movement, green screen extraction, color, and lighting.

TECHNICAL DIRECTOR: LIGHTING & RENDERING Determine the visual look of a film using light and color to tell the viewer what to see and how to feel. Work on lighting a 3D scene, rendering the scene, or rough compositing.

MATTE PAINTERCreate photo-real images that fool audiences into thinking that they are looking at footage shot on location. Matte painting involves integration of 3D CG elements and compositing, requiring technical and artistic ability. Like concept artists, matte painters work across genres—they may be asked to paint a Mayan temple one day and a spaceport the next. Research, especially architectural research, is an integral part of matte painting.

SURFACING TEXTURE ARTISTPaint textures, both from scratch and by utilizing photography, then apply these to shaders that are adjusted to simulate the material properties of skin, metal, glass, wood, and more. This creates the desired surface look and feel for characters, props, and environments with direction from the production designer and/or art director.

With more than 25,000 alumni around the world, Academy of Art University strives to keep our artist communities engaged and supported in their professional lives.

Our Alumni

ANDY WOODVFX Producer, Oculus Story Studio

Andy Wood was about to graduate from high school when the Academy Award-nominated animated film How to Train Your Dragon was released in 2010, the year he came to Academy of Art University.

A few years later, the 2015 Animation & Visual Effects graduate—a lifelong fan of film and of animated films, in particular—found himself in a rather special position: having a hand on the equally celebrated How to Train Your Dragon 2. It is the kind of feat, he says, that probably would not have come to be had he not been a student at the Academy.

“I met an outreach supervisor from DreamWorks Animation during the Spring Show in 2012,” he remembers. “I was volunteering for the Industry Day. We got to talking, and that fall, I joined their team as an intern.”

Wood would spend the next year and a half as an intern and production assistant, working on several stages of the production pipeline for How to Train Your Dragon 2—including animation, lighting, visual and character effects, and surfacing—and helping to give the film its beautiful texture. It was, per his admission, a dream come true and quite surreal at first.

Wood (far left) and the StudioX team that worked on the short, The Chaplain.

“I grew up making films, and I loved Toy Story and Shrek,” he says. “With animation, there are no limitations to what you can create, which allows you to tell a story however you want. How to Train Your Dragon was such a technically and artistically successful film with such a great story. I almost didn’t believe it when I got to work on the sequel. It took about a month for it to really sink in.”

From DreamWorks, Wood moved on to Industrial Light & Magic, where he spent six months as a production assistant on the worldwide blockbuster Jurassic World. He has worked on diverse productions like the 2015 Sundance Special Jury Prize-winning

drama Advantageous (whose visual effects were produced, in part, in the Academy’s StudioX) and Fruitvale Station. (His freelance branding work includes clients such as the San Francisco Giants Community Fund, the Spokane Hoopfest Association, and Academy of Art University.) He credits, in no small measure, the Academy with preparing him for the demands of the animation world.

“Knowing how the pipeline works was an invaluable asset when I got to DreamWorks,” he says. “As soon as I walked into the studio I knew what to do. I love producing content and telling the stories, and I learned how to do that at the Academy.”

PATSWITCH JARITNGARM Intern, Framestore

Patswitch Jaritngarm knew after watching the original Jurassic Park that someday, he would become a visual effects artist. He was four at the time, and 20 years later, he began to fulfill his childhood dream at Academy of Art University.

“I couldn’t stop thinking about how they made the dinosaurs come alive!” says the 2015 MFA Visual Effects graduate of what led him to pursue his passion, noting that he also knew he would have to look away from his native Thailand to study the art of visual effects.

Jaritngarm is currently on his optional practical training at the Academy’s StudioX, where he has contributed visuals to films such as Fruitvale Station and the Oscar-nominated Beasts of the Southern Wild. He is presently working as lead compositor on Chuck Hank and the San Diego Twins, an action movie scheduled to be released in 2016.

DANIELLE JOHNSON Freelance Animator

Danielle Johnson, a 2015 MFA 2D Animation graduate, is finally living her dream after years of trepidation (which led to a music degree from Penn State) and detours (a short, “safe” stint in insurance). She is a freelance animator working in San Francisco, and her clients include GitHub, a Web-based Git software repository hosting service.

“I grew up loving cartoons,” she says, “but I never knew that animation was something you could study in college. I figured I’d become a music teacher, until I started doing some research and found out about the Academy and how they welcome students who don’t necessarily have a lot of experience or a professional portfolio.”

Johnson says the Academy provided “a lot of one-on-one time with teachers.” It also led her to an internship at Helpful Bear Productions, a visual development company steered by Gilbert Banducci, Pre-Production Lead at the School of Animation & Visual Effects. It also has provided rich opportunity for networking post-graduation. “A lot of people at GitHub went to the Academy, which is incredible to me,” she says.

“I always wanted to work in a collaborative, creative environment with like-minded people, and that’s what I’m doing.

On one of your weekends, you will have the chance to take your artistic exploration farther by taking a weekend trip to Venice, which is included in the program.

Disciplines covered during this intensive program include painting, printmaking, illustration, photography, and art and architectural history.

If you have an interest in fashion, you should look into our Fashion Scholarship Exchange. Offered through the Sister City Scholarship Exchange Program, the School of Fashion at Academy of Art University awards scholarships to study in Paris with Studio Berçot and L’École de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne. Check in with your director to make sure you are eligible for this competitive scholarship.

Study Abroad OpportunitiesOne of the best ways to learn about the world is to see the world. We will delve into the numerous ways in which we can elevate your experience in class and beyond through our exciting Study Abroad opportunities.

STUDY ABROAD WITH US Our Study Abroad programs are designed to help broaden your artistic education by experiencing art and culture first hand. You can do this by taking advantage of Academy of Art University’s Study Abroad program. The Academy offers exciting opportunities that you can explore during your journey toward your degree.

The Liberal Arts: Seminar in Europe is a three-week intensive traveling course in which you will study and write about the architecture and art you encounter in some of Europe’s greatest cities and collections. Lectures will supplement each museum visit, and you will be encouraged to examine your own creative instincts in order to develop pieces for your student portfolio.

How The Courses WorkCREATE YOUR OWN CLASS SCHEDULEWhen you take online courses at the Academy, you are free to manage your own time; there are no set class schedules that require you to be online at specific times of the day. Course content is divided evenly across 15 modules spread out during a semester. Each module’s coursework—instructional videos, audio-enhanced slideshows, digital documentation, interviews, and more—is made available at the start of each module period.

ENGAGE YOUR PEERS You may work and study independently, but that does not mean you cannot call on the support of your online classmates. Each course offers a class discussion area where students and instructors can freely exchange thoughts, post work, and provide or receive creative feedback. The discussion area’s sole purpose is to give you and your peers the opportunity to support one another’s development as artists.

To find out more, contact an admissions representative or visit www.academyart.edu/online-education.
